- motang, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5I am really excited about HP Mini 1000, planning on buying one when it comes out (the Linux version of course).
- mazza558, on 10/31/2008, -1/+4These are a different type - pre-installed. New users will have absolutely no problems with it as everything's set up for them
- MattBD, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1I think PCLinuxOS is kind of like that, and it's one of the best KDE desktops I've ever seen. I still prefer Kubuntu though, personally.
- mcfara, on 11/02/2008, -0/+1Yea I'd like to see some numbers supporting that statement...
- sledhead45, on 10/31/2008, -1/+2"all that means in 2009 there is likely to be more Linux desktops shipping than Windows"
somehow I really doubt this - Vadi0, on 10/31/2008, -2/+3The only question is, are Linux users ready?
(I don't think so, judging by the amount of terminal commands in howtos, help posts, and the unshakable mentality of "but you can't use a computer without knowing the terminal") - jamesmcm, on 10/31/2008, -1/+1I think if GNU/Linux is really to take the desktop market they must fork the kernel into server and desktop editions. Con Kolivas produced patches for the kernel which improved desktop responsiveness and performance but stopped recently after getting fed-up of having all his patches rejected from the mainline as the Linux kernel is so server (and money) focused. Read his full interview here: http://apcmag.com/why_i_quit_kernel_developer_con_ ...
And it's a shame that Ubuntu, the great hope of GNU/Linux on desktops, just recently announced they will focus on the server edition in order to become profitable. I just wish there was a distribution fully focused on desktops only, from the kernel right-up to the custom applications. It would have to be funded by donations of course, but if it became popular it could at least get funding from support deals with Dell and the netbook manufacturers.
