- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19*****. The Linux kernel since .21 has been the first and only PC OS kernel which is capable of tickless operation, making power consumption on Linux significantly less then any other OS on the market. Intel has also been working with the kernel developers directly to make Linux incredibly power efficient.
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19MS must be running out of lobbying $$$.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16 Whats that...Do I hear the sound of a flung chair hitting the wall?
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17...so /that's/ what they call Penguin power (pun).
- azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Game over try again. Your sentence structure failed to present a valid argument.
Insert coin. - KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9To think that they could probably get even better results by employing a few of our fellow diggers. Good news either way.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The avalanche has already started, its too late for the pebbles to vote.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Indeed, the Linux kernel is fantastic at power management. The problem is some drivers aren't written to an appropriate standard to take advantage of power management options and quite a bit of software hasn't been modified to really allow seamless suspending and restarting.
Linux is very good in terms of power consumption though, get far more out of my laptop than with any version of Windows. - burty89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah, my laptop must be magical because openSuSE 10.3 (almost 10.3 anyway) can suspend/resume/hibernate perfectly out of the box, and this is with the mess that is fglrx (ATIs proprietary driver). Although I did get a popup saying hibernation had failed after resuming (even though it had worked fine) until I told it not to show again.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What! You mean I've just wasted $699.

But SCO wouldn't lie... - watcht, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Its actually not so bad anymore, I get more battery time with linux than i do with vista, now their real problem is graphics management but i got windows there for that
- AllLitUp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Who pays for linux these days?
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That happens when you have no experience with the command line. The communication skills of the user reduce to an orgy of pointing and gesturing. When they get back into the real world the sad result is momsshizzle. Linux isn't just about freedom, it's about helping people who can't string a sentence together too.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I know a well noted chair manufacturer from Redmond has just placed an order for a Ferrari. Cause and effect.
- UnstableMind, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's probably b/c they solicited for bids. Lowest bidder won.
- burty89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think he/she means their (the department of energys) bills, not his/her own.
- watcht, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Hmm wonder if this change will lower the bills?
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Nice metaphor, dugg up just for that.
- jsd8cc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I wonder if the DoE has this site bookmarked: http://www.lesswatts.org/
- daradib, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Direct Link: http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2007 ...
- burty89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, I'm simply saying that it works in some cases, and it doesn't take "some kind of miracle laptop" as mightydavefish suggests.
- kurtismccartney, 10 hr 3 min ago, -0/+1Also, for large scale deployment and specialized applications this requires soliciting contractor with a history of both providing services to government agencies as well as providing a well documented plan for deployment and expandability. After all Linux is seldom a choice made solely for "the lowest bid" as Microsoft goons will remind you, it costs a lot to set up one of the most stable platforms in the world. (Maybe not in those words)
Also, my experiences with Red Hat from an organizational perspective focused more on assistance for services I would deploy than proposals regarding what services should be included. DLT will likely provide excellent service in co-operation with services from the businesses and community around the selected dist. - MrDo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Of course they would only be able to work after school. (rimshot)
- heavyal, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Ok, so if I'm reading this right ... from the actual article http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2007 ... DLT is reselling RedHat to the Energy Dept. .. so why didn't the E.D. just go straight to RedHat? What's the upside to going through a reseller in this instance? I'm just thinking that RedHat has great paid support already so I guess I just don't see the upside.
- joemommasfat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The Department of [nuclear weapon] Energy isn't the people you pay your electric bill to
- Meep3D, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1So because it works on your laptop it must magically work on everyone elses?
I've never got suspend/resume or hibernate working, ever. Works fine with Windows. - objectcode, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0yeah right. lower bills or more profit?
- kainaw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0What I'd like to see is how many Linux DESKTOP computers are being purchased. Sure, there are a lot of servers out there - but I don't see much on the desktop.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1That's not how the government works. The purpose of government is to be as wasteful and corrupt as possible. With that in mind it makes perfect sense.
- IceZZ, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3Completely agree. Part of the reason you see this is because of the OSDN payrolled folks posting this stuff as propaganda for the community... but it doesn't belong on Digg. You don't get these kinds of articles for each install of OSX or Windows...
- flarizle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1They should rename this article to "company offers the cheapest contract to Department of Energy and uses linux because it's free."
- objectcode, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3dugg down for posting *****
- Praesil, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1I suspect they mean the servers; we all use windows PCs here and I haven't heard any announcements related to this.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Whoa.
You are getting blasted for telling the truth.
I haven't been able to use linux on a laptop until the last few months because the suspend and power management never worked.
Don't be hating on whataboutdave for saying what we all KNOW is true.
Or did you guys have some kind of miracle laptop where the APM and ACPI worked like it should? - zeitgueist, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2Can we have a "X company just bought Y number of Linux computers" category so I can turn this crap off?
- whataboutdave, on 10/10/2007, -19/+6Kind of ironic as power management is one of the few remaining glaring shortcomings in Linux...
- momsshizzle, on 10/10/2007, -19/+0Linsux power? No wonder we'll more blackouts/brownouts in the summer!
