- S68x, on 09/30/2008, -16/+96Well, at least we can be thankful the planes don't run Vista. Especially in the cockpit.
Pilot: And...gear down.
Computer: Windows needs your permission to continue!
Pilot: YES! YES!!
Computer: Landing gear has stopped working! Windows is looking for a solu- *bluescreen*
Pilot: SHI- - sfacets, on 09/30/2008, -3/+78I flew Swiss once, and pressed all the buttons on the control. I kid you not, the entire entertainment system crashed.
Windows CE. - DocHoliday22, on 09/30/2008, -16/+73Spotting Linux in everyday or unusual places is becoming a trend.... Nobody cares.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -8/+59Linux version:
Pilot: And...gear down.
Co-pilot: And how do i do that? With the other Windows planes i just have to press a button in the GUI and it works....
Pilot: Well, let's look in their Forum, someone might know that...
Co-pilot: Uh... sir, the ground is aproaching, we need to act quickly...
Pilot: Let's see, there is a guy here that says:
Must install kernel 10.3.01 and gclib 1.2
then download source code from some obscure site, recompile, blalahhh
Co-pilot. ARRGGGHHHH, WE'RE GONNA CRASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

next day on DIGG:
LATEST NEWS: Plane crashes because pilots were dumb! Linux rules! - thehacker123, on 09/30/2008, -0/+44Good old Mr. Blurrycam
- thegamingguy, on 09/30/2008, -1/+42I think the only reason I saw that was because it did crash :)
- kazolar, on 09/30/2008, -2/+40Saw tux on boot-up screens in delta, Virgin, Cathay, need I go on. Not a big deal. What's bothersome is the fact that you see this boot-up screen because in all of my flights the inflight entertainment system had to be rebooted several times due to one problem or the other. If this was windows -- you'd all be all over it.
- raydeen, on 09/30/2008, -5/+39Hijacker: Fly this plane to Cuba!
Pilot: No.
Hijacker: sudo Fly this plane to Cuba!
Pilot: ...ok. - fezzasus, on 09/30/2008, -18/+51Who cares?
It does little to make an operating system seem common place when it's considered a novelty whenever it is spotted in use - Kamino, on 09/30/2008, -0/+30In-flight entertainment systems are really fragile.. this guy managed to crash it too: http://blogs.csoonline.com/how_to_crash_an_in_flig ...
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -19/+45So???
- diggopolous, on 09/30/2008, -3/+27who gives a flying *****
- SigmaEcho, on 09/30/2008, -0/+24Mac Version:
Pilot: And...gear down.
[Pilot pushes the landing gear button, and the plane lands safely]
Co-Pilot: Well, that was easy.
Ground Crew Technician: Well, time to scrap this plane, you're getting the upgraded model.
Pilot: But this plane's only a few years old!
Ground Crew Technician: Yup.
The next day, the airline goes bankrupt. - Myrth, on 09/30/2008, -2/+24you mean that's a feature?
from unprivileged terminal? - BnafetS, on 09/30/2008, -2/+22Virgin Atlantic is also using Linux for their entertainment system (at least on the flight I took)
- illDecree, on 09/30/2008, -0/+17Can't run Crysis!
- thegamingguy, on 09/30/2008, -3/+18I was seriously happy to see that I could watch tv in the flight, but every time the PA cut in, the system had some issues readjusting. More flights need this type of amenity.
- vivalanation734, on 09/30/2008, -0/+15OLD. They've been doing this forever... also they have been running a version from 2004 for ever now.... so it has a ton of problems.
- MrDo, on 09/30/2008, -0/+14They do crash quite often.
They just keep booting over and over and over and over on all screens.
But to be fair I think it is a poorly written application on top, that crashes and the system then is configured to reboot when that application exits. So the Linux under it all runs fine.
Unless the have some keepalive thing that some software must trigger all the time to prevent hardware reset, but I don't think it is that advanced. - unluckier, on 09/30/2008, -3/+15Many have a certain combination of keys that will reboot the system. And it's likely that you pressed those keys (among others).
- millerm277, on 09/30/2008, -0/+12It (unfortunately), doesn't work too well. I've been on two Continental flights with it, and neither of them worked properly for the whole flight. Seemed to be more a problem with a lack of training of the attendants on how to work it than anything else. As someone else said, whenever they tried to make an announcement, it had issues returning to the way it was before.
- yuanzhoulu, on 09/30/2008, -1/+13why would you *want* to crash an in-flight entertainment system? that just means no movies for you for the rest of your long journey.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -3/+14Sooo is Linux so rare in the specialty OS category that something pointless like this makes the front page of Digg?
- JedicodeWarrior, on 09/30/2008, -3/+13Why is it that Linux nazis have an inferiority complex that forces them to point out legit uses for the OS. It's like every time they find a Mr. Frosty that uses a Linux controlled frozen yogurt machine, they feel the need to point and go "see, it is a real operating system".
Folks, no one cares. Get over yourselves. - majortom1981, on 09/30/2008, -0/+8Hmm wait? So your saying linux crashed ?OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- shadowblade989, on 09/30/2008, -1/+8Its actually any Airbus plane, too. Didn't feel like looking up who makes Delta's planes.
- miketowninc, on 09/30/2008, -2/+9extremely well put!!
Doesn't linux ask for permission? Or am I just crazy?
hmmm
even worse, it pretends like it will remember my password but it never does.
oh I love it. - colourclassic, on 09/30/2008, -0/+7Terrorist!
- Deevo55, on 09/30/2008, -1/+8Seriously eh. I'm getting sick of seeing 10 linux stories everytime I log on to DIgg. Surely there are more interesting stories floating around the internet.
- seldon21, on 09/30/2008, -0/+7I would rather know the specs. How/what are they using to encode the content. How do they update the entire plane of content? Are there any special access keys or submenu's you can access? They are networked because you can play head to head games.
- Lankerson, on 09/30/2008, -1/+8buried for the crappy photo
- VolksDude, on 09/30/2008, -1/+7Air Canada has been doing this for a long long time....
- TehDoctor, on 09/30/2008, -7/+13Linux boots faster than Windows and OS X, troll
- jacobmorrison, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6I didn't even know that delta has in seat entertainment. I am always bored to death on transatlantic flights, I'm taking Lufthansa this month.
- Expl0siv0, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6i see what you did there
- NoozeHound, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6What? No windows seat! ***** you.
- colourclassic, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6Every geek who will now fly Delta airlines.
- stevetrojanman, on 09/30/2008, -1/+6Yes, Virgin Atlantic uses Linux as well.
On the flight I was on, my software crashed twice and my fiance's crashed once. Its a good idea, but the frequent crashing was annoying. - FunkyGuy, on 09/30/2008, -2/+7Omg! Linux! Quickly digg it to the homepage!
- coit, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5Delta has used these for years, and yes, they are extremely buggy. This has been on digg lots of times.... I'm surprised you didn't see that when you submitted.
- srodolff, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5What people have failed to mention here is that the only reason you would see that screen is if the entertainment system crashed or froze mid-flight. I had some choice words for that little penguin there.
- khsheehan, on 09/30/2008, -0/+5Apparently flying ***** do.
- tylermenezes, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4So does Air Canada, except they've managed to take something very stable like Linux and make it crash all the time.
- chadsmith729, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4I know your pain, when I had to euthanize a book of mine about a month ago it was very painful. I am sorry for your loss.
- kslat3r, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4great read, thanks!
- anandoc, on 09/30/2008, -2/+6Your sense of humor at the expense of a tragedy sucks, sir.
- visarya, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4will it run crysis
- jahil, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4Just flew on Delta yesterday, and saw this linux system, it crashed 3 times and 4 hours. And they crew asked everyone not to touch the screen while it went through its 8 minute boot up sequence, as that can also crash the system, and the guy next to me was touching the screen during this cycle! They asked us to email Delta and tell them to tell Panasonic (makers of the system) to get their act together.
It was pretty cool though, I spent $7 dollars to watch Babies Momma and an episode of flight of the concords. - Worktruck, on 09/30/2008, -1/+5Yeah, I agree when I flew to Germany back in April with my Girlfriend for vacation on Delta our entire sections entertainment system did not work. The system just kept running ads and wouldn't let us make any selection. It was very annoying to see people 10 rows in front and 5 rows behind watching American Gangster. So, that was a very boring 10 hour flight to say the least. I knew it was linux from the boot screen, but I didn't really consider that the problem nor would I if the PC had been windows. I blame the lack of I.T. training the only solution the Flight Attendant had was to reboot the system over and over again with no luck.
Thankfully on the way back everything worked fine. So, I buried this for being stupid and bringing back horrible memories of being bored completely out of my mind for close to 10 hours. Oh and yes I had a book, but I just couldn't seem to focus on it for very long. So, I had to put it down. - fatorange, on 09/30/2008, -0/+4Same shot, but with Windows on an airplane: http://flickr.com/photos/christianhbecker/24487620 ...
That was with Lufthansa... -
