- miketest, on 05/21/2009, -2/+29I wanna get one.
- NoNameWorks, on 05/21/2009, -2/+24battery life, portability
- redrabbit, on 05/21/2009, -2/+20You can throw Ubuntu on any netbook, so the stripped OS argument isn't really fair. 75% of netbooks these days come with XP, anyway, which is fine for most people. "Underpowered" is relative, so that doesn't make sense, either.
And everyone has different needs. I love my desktop PC, but I don't want to take that to class with me to browse and take notes. I also don't want to take a 15" laptop either. A 10" netbook is perfect for a lot of people, including me. - inactive, on 05/21/2009, -3/+16Any device that is not running Windows is a win in my book.
- kent1146, on 05/21/2009, -1/+11The reason netbooks don't make sense to you is because your criteria is different than a netbook owner. Your criteria is obviously power and bang-for-your-buck.
A netbook customer intentionally wants the small size, weight, battery life, and price for a unit that is "good enough" to do what they need (web browser, email client, videos). They don't need a Core 2 Duo processor, because that is overload for their needs. - redrabbit, on 05/21/2009, -1/+10Well, maybe the size issue *is* important for other people?
- PolarBearFire, on 05/21/2009, -1/+10Netbooks are cheap and SMALL, they're not supposed to replace full-fledge systems. Think of them as disposable computers.
- inactive, on 05/21/2009, -2/+10But I don't want to run XP.
- darkchild, on 05/21/2009, -0/+8Its kind of obvious isn't it? The netbooks demonstrated in the video are all based on Linux, so you need to install Linux compatible software.
- jba68, on 05/21/2009, -0/+8Why all the negative Nancy's.
I like the fact there is an alternate (in comparison to windows) os that is able to run on a cheap, small platform device. Manufacturers realize that there is a market for a device that is small and portable. - hartley, on 05/21/2009, -0/+8yeah, considering one is an x86 cpu and the other is ARM.
Ubuntu just recently started getting ARM support. - inactive, on 05/21/2009, -2/+10Not mindlessly at all. Linux is becoming popular.
- gemlarin, on 05/21/2009, -1/+8Seriously?
My understanding is that netbooks are the fastest growing computer market right now. I see hundreds of them on campus. I think you are wrong on this one. - Icecream, on 05/21/2009, -0/+7Claims without proof? Ill digg that.
- _skin_, on 05/21/2009, -0/+7Why are you getting dugg down? I want the iso too. Where can you get it?
- RobotBuddha, on 05/21/2009, -0/+5Size is the entire point for me.
- dagr8tim, on 05/21/2009, -6/+10I'd install it on my 900HA if I could get the installer ISO.
- TheUngod, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4a vibrator is a gadget no?
- Manther, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4XP is ancient and about to die, why would anyone really want to go spend money on it at this point??
- bannor78, on 05/21/2009, -0/+4android is awesome on a cell phone but leave the net book to Ubuntu you won't be disappointed. it's all linux anyway.
- inactive, on 05/21/2009, -1/+5Android *is* a Linux OS.
- mattus, on 05/21/2009, -10/+14Is it really any surprise than an OS designed for mobile phone also runs OK on a netbook? But of course, anything suggesting that Linux might actually become popular gets mindlessly dugg up.
- FiveDollarYoBet, on 05/21/2009, -1/+5That's what she said
- thugok, on 05/21/2009, -0/+41/2 the weight, 2x the battery life, more portable. Yeah I don't get it either.
- dagr8tim, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3Let's see my ASUS EEE PC 900HA is similar (or better) in specs to my 2 year old Compaq laptop. The Compaq has about an hour and 15 minutes of battery life. I get 4 to 5 hours out of my ASUS. For me it's a no brainer.
Plus, netbooks are not a notebook/desktop replacement. It's something small and portable that you can throw into a bag. - tonmil, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3I want a laptop with a minimum of a 13" screen. If Android makes it far cheaper than a Windows machine, I'll buy it in a heartbeat. You can have your 9" or 10" netbooks... not for me.
- virtualmode, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3to Ubuntu and Moblin. Both are Linux anyway
- Elranzer, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3It runs OS X, but very slowly. I'd say it's more like walking than running...
- Stemp, on 05/21/2009, -0/+3http://www.kernel.org/
- ThirdPrize, on 05/21/2009, -1/+4As this shows, a netbook is sort of bridging the gap between mobile phones and laptops rather than laptops and desktops. If it does all the things your phone does, (notes, music, vids, surfing but maybe not phone calls) but has a better keyboard/screen then great.
- oobuntu, on 05/21/2009, -1/+4What no demo? How pointless is that?
Also, the guy missed a trick by not having a 4th PC running the moblin beta. - redrabbit, on 05/21/2009, -3/+5Why would I want to install Android over Ubuntu? Increased performance?
I wonder how it compares to smaller distros like Crunchbang or Puppy. - twiztidsinz, on 05/21/2009, -5/+7But that's OLD tech.... this is NEW tech!!
- weiran, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2I've been waiting to see if anyone's managed it, a (quick) Google shows no, but the specs all seem compatible with OS X so there's a good chance it will.
- andyb747, on 05/21/2009, -2/+4every gadget is cooler when its smaller...
- ldog, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2Android on the G1 uses a touchscreen. The mouse can be used in place, but not without some tweaking. There is no cursor, and no mouseover events. Touchscreens just click, drag, and maybe multi-touch.
Would have been nice to see a demo of how that stuff is handled on the mini. - redrabbit, on 05/22/2009, -0/+2Why?
- bdbr, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2Just because its Linux under the hood doesn't mean its a usable Linux client (my home router is linux under the hood). With any decent Linux distro you can run things like Amarok and Open Office.
Take a look at the Android "market" and you'll see the apps are just little apps for phone-sized interfaces. - mrbad101, on 05/21/2009, -0/+2Agreed. I even upgraded my memory to 2g and it didn't make that huge of a performance increase. The CPU just cant quite cut OSX to be fast enough to really USE.
- rpgmakr, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1@manther: I just uninstalled Vista Black from my laptop and installed an unattended version of XP instead. More disk space, can run the same apps. I didn't use any of the useless vista features, I could go on and on. I didn't find that version of vista unstable though, I didn't use it a lot anyways, I'm a linux guy myself :)
- cyberoidx, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Nah, I'd still get one If it ran MobLin tho, ( moblin.org ) Seems much hotter.
- Manther, on 05/22/2009, -0/+1Well, my point was really that if you get something with XP on it, it's a very short period of time before most of the software you want won't work on XP anymore. If you have a copy of XP to replace Vista, that's likely the smart move, but anyone who would try to go get a copy of XP at this point is foolish. Especially since you can download and install Ubuntu for free, AND get every update they ever release for it as long as your netbook lives (and even after that on your next one...)
Vista is a change from XP, why continue down the path of dishing out hundreds of dollars to RENT (have you read the terms lately??) an operating system, when you can get one for free that needs the same amount of learning?? - bdbr, on 05/21/2009, -1/+2Yep, this isn't the first time android on a netbook has shown up on Digg - I remember, because my comment was why anyone would want to run a phone OS instead of a real OS like Linux or Windows. Surely your choice of apps will be small with Android, and the ones that are developed won't likely be for more general-purpose computing.
- fwertz, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1Also, its essentially the only piece of technology inhabitants of growing third-world economies can invest in for themselves and their children to help better their lives.
- dagr8tim, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1@Andrwmorph Bought the Asus because it had the atheros chip set.
- ronaldmonster, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1But it would be a better value than some ***** netbook.
- inactive, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1I found the android screen resolution deplorable.
Use one to one pixel mapping, and we'll talk.
Look at the shape of that clock! - gemlarin, on 05/21/2009, -2/+3Sweet, I was on the fenece about getting a Mini 10, but this seals the deal for me. Great find!
- ldog, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1How ancient?
The G1 phone uses a 500Mhz ARM chip. I imagine you don't want to go much slower than that. -
