- diablo75, on 10/12/2007, -4/+127Installing WINE is a snap. If it's not included with the desktop, it can be downloaded and installed in under a minute flat through the Synaptic Package Manager.
- davefin, on 10/12/2007, -11/+82Wine Is Not an Emulator
- netarchitect, on 10/12/2007, -6/+75"sudo apt-get install wine"
problem solved. - championchap, on 10/12/2007, -3/+69"Tru Dat"
Anyway, I'm all for the keeping Ubuntu free from Windows apps where possible. If the average consumer is given the option to install Windows apps instead of finding a linux alternative then what have we accomplished? - yoshifan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+65*Waits for someone to write an "How To Install Wine In Ubuntu Guide" with that exact line and submit it to digg*
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54Ubuntu isn't really a Linux distro because why exactly?
Because it's popular.. or because it's easy to use? I thought Linux was trying to attract new users rather than scare them away like it has been known to. - Purin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+49Look at his icon.
There's no way he's a *real* Linux user. - djGentoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39Remind me, again, why everyone hates Ubuntu? Are we all n00bs just because we're using Ubuntu and you're using Slackware? Say it to ESR's face. ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35well wine isn't installed as part of ubuntu in the first place is it?
and its only a sudo apt-get command away anyway
so why is this even news worthy? - selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34Or for the point and clickers I believe it also resides in the Add/Remove programs list.
- Sairgem, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34Look at the l33t slackware user everyone!
- Dumbledore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32are you one of those people who doesn't like something just because everyone else does? if so, you are an idiot, because ubuntu is one of the greatest and most user friendly linux distros around. move out of your mother's basement and get a job, then you can start making fun of ubuntu.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34Before that self righteous acronym was coined, it *was* WINdows Emulator.
- lonnieh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28did someone from the ubuntu team piss in your cheerios this morning?
meh. either way, i hope someone does. - OHiggins, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26I could smell your elitism from a mile away. Explain to me how Ubuntu isn't a real Linux distro? Because it's easy to use?
- Renton, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26The synaptic packet manager calls it an emulator.
- greywolfexcel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20That's like saying OSX is an expensive Windows alternative. :P
Ubuntu is a full-featured OS, plain and simple. - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Makes sense to not include WINE by default. Plus, it simply doesn't work flawlessly, which would piss off/frustrate many who try to use it as a replacement for Windows.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22yoshifan: assuming it doesn't already exist.
- prammy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@Randall:
In your esteemed opinion what would a real distro be? LFS?
Hell I have been using Linux since 1995 and have used almost everything from Red Hat to Debian to Slackware to LFS to Gentoo and I think Ubuntu is a good distribution. Though my preference lies with Fedora, I don't see anything wrong with Ubuntu. Have I missed something according to your highly complex linux hacking intellect? - twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I don't like wine myself. I find if there is a program that is windows only that I want to use, it is easier to just go to http://www.osalt.com and find a natively run linux alternative for what I want to do. The only thing I could see myself using wine for is playing games, but it doesn't work very well for that, imo.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20It's not an emulator. It is a program to run windows programs natively in linux.
- shamanking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Well since DELL is using ubuntu now maby this will influence large software developors to make more ubuntu/linux software
- voyvf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15what, exactly, is your definition of a *real* linux user?
because, technically, one would assume a *real* linux user would be someone who used a computer that ran the linux kernel. this is something i've been doing for over ten years now - and i'm quite happy about a hardware distributor offering the same choice to the public. - mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Gentoo user go back to your cave.
- Renton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Because people like brand names. They'd rather buy an Ipod than a generic MP3/MP4 player that does the same thing and costs less.
- docjeff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Dell simply doesn't want to have to support people who use wine. It makes sense. I sure as hell wouldn't want to support them.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13an emulator:
Creates a virtual system that, to the programs run on it, is indistinguishable from a real environment. Basically, it's virtualization at the software level.
WINE:
Provides a library that understands the Win32 system calls. - duality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I twitched when I read the headline, but it made good sense to me after I gave it a few moments to sink in.
This has two advantages. First, it forces the strengths and weaknesses of Linux (or Ubuntu, at least) into the spotlight. Again, more eyes (and more types of eyes) means more efficiency, especially when you have "ordinary" people fiddling with things that technology-oriented people might overlook. This is one of the most fundamental traits that has made Linux everywhere what it is.
Second, it gives the political appearance that Linux is not trying to compete directly with Windows. What the muckety-mucks up in the Microsoft hierarchy probably won't get is that by distancing itself to some degree from Windows, Linux IS poised to become serious competition. This exact technique is one of the things that has kept OSX from falling off the map, and it will probably create a similar degree of traction, in combination what what Linux already has. - dchaosdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1254 minutes late, sir. :)
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Why would someone install iTunes when they already have an iTunes clone (rhythmbox) in Ubuntu, which also works with iPods. You simply tell them, hey this is Linux, apple makes itunes only for windows and mac, but ubuntu comes with something very similar. If they insist on using iTunes instead of rhythmbox, well... Linux just might not be for them.
- jcronkhite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Aren't we trying to get away from using Windows applications? Dell should just install Ubuntu, and let the users discover additional software, perhaps through a custom Dell homepage in Firefox. Maybe recommend Automatix 2 or Easy Ubuntu, and offer a screenshot tutorial on how to use the Synaptic Package Manager. Perhaps have a quick overview of the concept of repos. Just don't make the new users feel like they have to use Windows applications. Show them the alternatives.
- zekesmz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The fact that you're railing against Ubuntu in favor of a "real distro", and then suggest installing Wine is pretty oxymoronish if you ask me.
- kleedrac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Better yet Dell could write their own custom script based on Automatix/EasyUbuntu with their branding and put things in uber-simple windows-user terms :) now to try and convince my extended family to get one so my tech-support-from-home-for-free business can finally die :)
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15The second someone who doesn't know better tries to install iTunes or that idiotic "Weatherbug" program, Desktop Linux for the average moron (read: 90% of PC buyers) will die.
- nemoder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7exactly, and nothing would sour the publics view of Linux like trying to run an unsupported Windows program under wine and having it run like crap.
- srg13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Technically it is a software emulator, although they avoid using that term because people think of hardware emulation (ie. slow) when the term 'emulator' is used.
- shamanking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Well it isnt part of the Ubuntu package anyway so I'm not sure why this is news...
But anyway Wine only works half the time. And isn't very user friendly so i can see why they wouldn't want to include it. - inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@mercurysquad - because the entry level Linux user doesn't know what the best option is for an iTunes clone. They want iTunes because they know it will work.
And I prefer Banshee, for the record... - Ozzy73, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Randall just hates Ubuntu. Check out his comments, they are mostly against ubuntu.
http://digg.com/users/RandaII/news/commented
And thats not all. Check out his "blog" (which btw sucks)
http://www.drinkwithrandall.com/dear-mr-dell.htm - thomas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Holy crap he needs to get a life. Almost all of his comments are bashing Ubuntu. Oh and after some browsing around apparently his preferred distro is Fedora.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6sudo apt-get install wine
whats the big deal? - tymme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@antonionjvr:
"Because my mom knows how to use th Synaptic Package Manager."
And she'd know how to use WINE if it was pre-installed?
There's a learning curve regardless of OS. Supporting non-native programs is going to make things trickier. If it's too much to handle, go with the PC that will support her needs... don't skip out on it just because you have a grudge against MS. - kaiwai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For me, I don't there is anything wrong with the idea of wine, but there are far too many compatibility issues with wine that would cause major headaches for support - "my application won't work with wine! I thought wine was mean to run all windows applications!" - as you can guess, its not going to end well.
If Wine was 100% compatible with ever application written for Windows XP and below, it would be an awesome tool, but the problem is that it has major issues yet to be resolved - it isn't ready for prime time. - atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's not an emulator in the sense that it doesn't emulate a virtual machine it is a compatibility layer.
- cootetom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wonder if Dell will load Ubuntu with all the required codecs to play media such as DVD's amongst others. Ubuntu doesn't have these on any standard install due to licensing policies.
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"If it's not a cheap Windows alternative then what is it...?"
Perhaps he meant that a) Ubuntu is cheap, obviously (free) and b) it's an alternative to Windows? Not the best way to put it, though... - ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6hey sairgem, nothing wrong with Slackware! (though I wouldn't call myself l33t at all)
I respect Ubuntu for what it is and how far it's come, but chances are I'm gonna stay with my Slack and OpenBSD boxes. - rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually its more an emulation of software (imitation of windows), rather than a software emulator.
The key difference is that its effectively the same as Windows, just someone elses version of its API's -
