- cday, on 08/19/2008, -0/+3You know, it's hard to figure Dell's strategy out. I've never bought Dell products (though I've been given a few dead ones to fix, on occasion), but for some reason I regularly receive a full-color mini-catalog in the mail from Dell, full of specials and sales and shiney new stuff. I just got the latest one yesterday, in fact. But not once, not even in the deepest, darkest recesses of the very back page is Linux of any flavor mentioned. No where.
Dell sometimes reminds me of the big-talking kid on the playground that swears he's not afraid of the school bully, but always seems to be hiding 'round the corner when the bully shows up.
When I see Ubuntu (or any other distro) featured on the cover of those Dell mini-catalogs, at least along-side XP or Vista, if not featured on its own, then I'll start believing that Michael Dell MIGHT not be a fence-riding weenie.
For some reason I keep waiting for the other shoe to fall...like the day that Dell loudly proclaims that they are going to stop offering Ubuntu to the public because it just wasn't selling well enough, yada yada, accompanied by a big pic of Michael Dell and Steve Ballmer happily shaking hands over their new, improved partnership.
Sorry for the rant, but Dell annoys me. - flatfish, on 08/19/2008, -0/+3Dell, like other manufacturers are testing the waters with Linux. I too receive those catalogs and I have never seen Linux mentioned.
What it boils down to is Dell is just trying to see if Linux sells, they are offering little advertising toward Linux and are certainly not promoting Linux.
I suspect they have reached the conclusion that Linux is not a good desktop seller for them but at the same time they don't want to see the likes of their competitors cash in on Linux should it take off.
The problem is that it appears the other companies are using the same approach, which isn't doing Linux any good.
If anything will propel Linux onto the desktop it's going to be those inexpensive Linux notebooks like the Eee. - frontporsche, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2It looks like an interesting keyboard layout.
