- Gazerock, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Bob Dole uses Linux
- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14iTunes for XP is garbage, especially when compared to Amarok for Linux.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Rather than Autodesk, Adobe I must say...
- Yoshi39, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7you probaly know this but incase you don't: Amarok is IMHO way better then iTunes so if you haven't checked it out I strongly recommend that you do http://amarok.kde.org/
- saturn5, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7"if the reaction to Dell's decision to offer a competing system is met with cold feet, it will likely guarantee another 10 years of Windows control, minimum"
I think that is exactly what is going to happen. They may sell a few laptops because the Linux techies can't build those, but I doubt many desktops will sell. And Joe Average computer user isn't going to go anywhere near them.
I don't think many in the Linux community really want to buy a Dell with Ubuntu, they just want Dell to offer it. And Dell, probably out of desperation, fell for it. - HarryBauzonia, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Now if we can get some software vendors like Autodesk (Autocad) to play along, we might be alright.
I've been emailing those guys about porting to Linux for almost 10 years now.
They don't listen to their customers though. - SanjayM, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Errr....since when could you not just play your whole library on random under amarok, that's what I'm doing right now? Amarok is probably the reason i switched to linux in the first place, its just a stunningly rich and intuitive application.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I'd hope perception would change. Open spec hardware should be considered a mark of quality for obvious reasons.
- geronimo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5What tells me Dell is serious is their emphasis on setting expectations realistically. They aren't providing mp3 codecs just yet, and they let everyone know about this. That can easily be resolved in the future. But the worst thing to do is to make expectations high then ruin trust. There will be problems at first, just like there were problems with Windows 2.11. I remember using Windows 2.11, and it wasn't fun. But Ubuntu will eventually overcome these minor problems and Dell stands a lot to gain. You must admire their effort here. I see people like saturn5 cheering the defeat of Dell and Ubuntu, waiting on the sidelines for any sign of weakness. Fortunately Dell seems like they're cautious and realistic, even talking about working with hardware vendors, which means they are in this for the long haul. Microsoft used to not work with hardware vendors, what you're seeing here is evolution of an OS in process. Eventually you will see ubuntu compatitbility on software products. "Windows 98, ME, XP, 2000, Vista, OS X, Ubuntu 7.04". Sounds crazy but for visionaries at Dell this is possible.
- unikuser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5+1 for Adobe. Photoshop. Even their flash is not up there. But, atleast they did that.
- shawnanigans, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Given the potential of the deal with deal and that of KDE 4, I truly believe that Linux as a desktop OS will begin to pose a major threat to Windows. I personally switched from XP to PCLinuxOS and I really think when KDE 4 come out and the stuff that comes with it improves it will be hard to stop. Amarok for example is just awesome. Though I really do miss iTunes.
- AMadeUpName, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Thank god... The company I work for setups up call centers for credit card companies. This means something like 400 identical computers. Many of these companies have Dell agreements. Because of the fact that many Dell desktop computers have such crappy Linux support we are forced to use Windows on them and lock these systems down as much as possible. It is a little known fact that most call center employees are about the most untrustworthy bunch you can find. Many call centers have to hire people with criminal records because no one else would apply for a job in which you regularly get calls from pissed off people who chew you a new one because of some finance charge they do not think they deserver. Because these people are so untrustworthy the computers they use have to be locked up tighter than Fort Knox. Things like removing the web browser are very desirable. This is as simple as not installing one on Linux and as hard as hell on Windows.
- hexydes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I hope all of you that complain that Microsoft has a stranglehold on the computer industry because of Windows, put your money where your mouth is when Dell puts out their Ubuntu systems, and you go and buy one.
This is a pretty major milestone for anyone who wants to move away from a Windows-dominated computer industry, and if the reaction to Dell's decision to offer a competing system is met with cold feet, it will likely guarantee another 10 years of Windows control, minimum. - KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4That's very unfortunate, but this article is about Linux. Save Dell rants for another thread.
- higherdef, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Was in the process of registering on Dell's Linux listserv, but it died on me. Now it's not responding at all; must be a Digg effect.
- inkubux, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Good news, let's see if it's gonna work
- bruenig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2hmmm, how insightful. So you mean to tell me that if all the vendors stop preloading windows and ported all windows program to linux, microsoft would not be as well. hmmmm
- kardonn, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9Drivers FTW
- KyjL, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3What, would you rather the current state of Linux drivers? I'd rather have a good shot at having insane market penetration and a company-backed development cycle rather than constantly living under a cycle that depends almost entirely on whenever people feel like doing it in their spare time (if even). This is a huge door blasted wide open for Linux and there's no reason to squander it for us to use it, it just might make other manufacturers pick up on Linux and finally make that big break it's been waiting 20 years for - market penetration to Average J. Consumer.
I don't care if Dell makes rather EH drivers, something is a ***** better than nothing. - benplaut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How about ESRI's ArcGIS Desktop?
- Fratm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@Hexydes,
I would have, if they would have offered this in December of last year, that was when I needed a new laptop, and also when I bought my new laptop, it came with XP and a free vista upgrade (which I never bothered to get.). I am running Ubuntu on my 6 month old Dell XPS M1210, and am very happy with it. But I have no need to purchase another laptop at this time.
-Fratm - n1pz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes the drivers are what is needed, no dell are not going to "fix" but of course it helps.
- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3There are so many things that can come into play during that 10 years that your guarantee can't possibly have ANY credibility.
You're better off playing all Black in Roulette. - 0siris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1finding dell drivers for windows isn't easy.... I went through hell while rehabbing my friends fairly new laptop, with a missing cd.
- KyjL, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6This'll be a huge push for one of the main reasons why Linux isn't ready for the Desktop: hardware drivers.
Evangelize all you want, Linux will never be big on the desktop until that gets fixed. Dell is going to fix that. - 0siris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I use primarily windows, for dumb reasons, and itunes sucks. The best around i think is windows media 11, which is sad. I do have one of those "install linux through windows" (i think its called wabi) on my main computer, so i can boot into ubuntu when i just want a stereo, because amorok is by far the best music arranging program. It needs some fixes with the album covers, and the lyrics, but otherwise its awesome.
- 0siris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1trade one monopoly for another...
- xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think in all fairness to dell they ship more computer systems then any other manufacturer, hypothetically speaking if dell sells 100x more laptops then say acer, and both have about a 3% defect rate, guess what there are gonna be 100x more people complaining about there dell being broken even the defect rate is the same as acer.
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think the important thing to get linux to the average joe is advertising.
Personally, I doubt Dell selling linux will make a dent if they still keep advertising vista/xp on tv and radio. - thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Apparently, you've never worked with Dell driven drivers....
- blackoper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0^^^ I hope that is sarcasm
- cato59, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I believe that when the hardware makers, and vendors realize that they can increase their profits
with Linux ,besides MSWin, then Linux will be a whole lot better alternative to MSwin.
They, the hardware people have to remove their blinkers.
Cato59 - slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Simply great!!!!
- SniperSlap, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Glad they're supporting Linux, but Dell really needs to refocus the quality of their product as well.
Just got a laptop and less than two months in the HDD was dead. The kicker? They sent it to me broken! - pooptaster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Oops, wrong story. Bury me.
- fangorious, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1In situations like this where the target market is the teeming masses it doesn't matter if Amarok is better than iTunes, all that matters is that it isn't iTunes. And, at least for me and one other person according to the bug report I filed, Amarok on Fiesty doesn't seem to support multimedia keys (on an MS Natural Multimedia keyboard). And shuffle by album only works for albums from a single artist, it will play all tracks by a single artist and then select another album (useless for soundtracks and compilations). And they seem to have removed the gstreamer engine for Amarok in Fiesty, so the codec manager won't help for enabling MP3/AAC/etc in Amarok. So it's pretty subjective to say Amarok is better than iTunes, at least in the context of Ubuntu's packaging of it.
- shawnanigans, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1I just prefer the way iTunes works. Its slow and semi-retarded on XP, but I ***** hate making playlists. I just want to put my library on shuffle and never have to make a playlist.
- captaincoconut, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2I will never buy Dell because I will never support a company that installs operating systems on their computers that violate numerous Microsoft patents. We should boycott Dell to show them that we care about Microsoft's intellectual property.
