- SlightlyStoopid, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22They've updated the blog confirming that they would be offering Ubuntu boxes outside of the US by the end of Summer.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Current intel gfx handle beryl nicely...
- Jacob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16yes all of them will run compiz
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Seems like Dells first (new) baby steps into Linux have been a winner. They are slowly increasing the range of hardware choices and also hinting that Linux will be available from Dell outside the US in the near future.
As the range of hardware choices increases and more countires are opened up, I wouldn't be surprised to see more Linux Distros be added. Maybe a KDE RPM distro to balance the Gnome Apt with Ubuntu - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Who needs Vista? Linux market share is increasing everyday!
- parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Any chance I could get compiz running on either of those?
- gabn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Dude but summer is ages away doesn't start to December i have to wait until February for it to end.
(Using seasons seems so out of place in the interweb, it's not like we go outside away ) - mcmlxxii, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9All round good news, well done to Dell for sticking their neck out.
- TehDoctor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The windows machine has no monitor and a celeron instead of a pentium.
- pak314, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7If you read the link...

- nights0223, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9You mean Microsoft?
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5In what possible way is Linux a ***** mess? The Ubuntu system that comes pre-installed on these Dells is great.
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yea, that's not going to work.
In order to use desktop effects with an Nvidia card, you it needs to install the proprietary Nvidia driver. In order to do that, it needs to write that setting to the disk and reboot with the new driver. Unfortunately, the "write to disk" step is impossible with a LiveCD. The only cards that will work with Desktop Effects with the LiveCD are those supported by free software drivers: mostly Intel Integrated Graphics. - witcompe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Make a U.S. friend. Send him/her the money via wire service or direct transfer. Have your friend order the Dell. Dell is then shipped to your friend. Friend then ships the Dell to you. All you have to do is pay extra shipping. Only thing friend has to worry about is international import/export laws... But only 5% of packages are ever scanned so chances are your friend will not get in trouble.
- stonyhill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Ask Nvidia and ATI why they don't release Linux drivers.
- cminardi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You probably will not be happy with the "Desktop Effects" - it's just two simple (cool nonetheless) effects. If you install Ubuntu at some point and get the driver working, make sure you get Beryl or Compiz Fusion - tons of more effects running better. There's literally hundreds of videos on YouTube showing these effects but I'll give you one vid to start with:

Compares Vista effects with Beryl effects (essentially hundreds of dollars versus free). - DrakeGTA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@Korkmaz: TRFA, In this morning's Linux Live Expert Forum session, John Hull confirmed that we do plan to offer Linux on the client side in additional locations outside the United States. - Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm going to have to agree that supporting multiple distros isn't a good plan for Dell. Ubuntu is a perfectly good distribution, and the benefits that Dell can gain by pushing Ubuntu as the standard for Desktop Linux are much greater than what they can get by offering an unnecessary and confusing choice.
Anyone who really wants to chose their Linux distro and wants to chose something other than Ubuntu can buy an Ubuntu box and install their distro of choice - the hardware will work, and if you're enough of a techie to seriously want a distro other than Ubuntu you can handle the install process. - DrakeGTA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I wouldn't put it past MS, but I wouldn't accuse dell of such a thing. Besides, I have the e1505n with Ubuntu 7.05, I love hell out of it, it works great, it had some hiccups during set up, but it works great now.
- cminardi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's good to see somebody offering Linux on desktops and laptops for people to buy. You also should save the money normally added into the cost of buying a system for the operating system since Ubuntu is completely free.
On a side note, I'd really like a catalog of Ubuntu/Debian compatible products. I think that would be a great publication for people who are looking to upgrade their system and don't want the hassle of buying something incompatible (looking at you wireless network companies). I mean, NDISwrapper is nice and all but I think I'd rather just have native support from my hardware. - swanny89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Plus dell doesn't get all those bonuses from companies (norton, Mcaffee) to put their viruses, I mean, useful security software trials on the computers.
- r3al1tych3ck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You do not save any money.
- polyGone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3OK, why does it make me reboot, when I try and use the desktop effects on the live cd? It makes me install an nvidea driver, then when I reboot, it is not there. It says it's DLing it to my cache. WTF?
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Why? What does Windows have that's worth spending $200 and going through a lengthy and annoying install procedure to get?
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3What's with the anemic graphics though? On the XPS with Ubuntu, the only graphics option is an nVidia 7300 LE. What the hell is that? Considering the XPS is Dell's designated gaming rig, you'd think they would consider at least an nVidia 7600 GS as a base line, and have options up to the 8800 GT or something.
- DrakeGTA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You know, I jumped on the 1505n the day it was offered... oh well,, nice screen anyway.
- Amablue, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You mean... damn, ran out of things to say.
- BadHand, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2They do make drivers for Linux. The NVidia ones are pretty good. Unfortunately, they are incompatible with the GPL and can not legally be distributed with the linux kernel. You are perfectly free to download it yourself, of course. But that is not an out of box solution. Safer to stick with the Intel graphic chipset which does have open-source drivers.
- sephiroth965, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why is this just now getting on the front page? These came out at least a week ago.
- DarkDx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Do they use custom repositories or canonical's?
- hexydes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Adding more distros, and more graphical environments, would be a collosal mistake on Dell's part. The idea of an operating system other than Windows is already confusing enough for the non-tech public; you're suggesting that Dell should muddy the waters even more, just as Linux is starting to make some in-roads with the average consumer via Dell and Ubuntu?
This would be a serious, serious mistake. Luckily, I think Dell knows that. - r3al1tych3ck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That word "innovator" is so abused. How is Dell innovating by offering GNU/Linux systems? Different companies have offered GNU/Linux systems for years. Dell is not innovating. It's great that they are branching out and all. However, they could have helped with the true innovators years ago.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dammit. You're right. I withdraw my comment. Thanks for pointing that out. The ubuntu machine is a much better deal as it comes with a monitor and a dual core Intel...... The windows machine is an AMD Sempron......
- ramenite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I installed Ubuntu on my e1705, and it runs great. I would have bought one of these preinstalled systems, but I bought this like a week before they were announced. They don't have 17" screens yet anyways.
It works wonderful. Outside going into XP to play a few games(one of the reasons I got this laptop, it's got the 256M 7800 GS GO), I'm in Linux. - stonyhill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but for half the cash, and much of the same technology, the 1420n is not bad at all. It's a pound heavier, but it also has significantly more screen real estate at 14 inches and 1440x900.
- weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4to run programs that don't currently run in Linux? such as... photoshop and a lot of games? unfortunately it's the truth.. but progress is being made :)
- Kr4t05, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Considering that managing a repository like that would require a good amount of money and effort from Dell, I would assume that Canonical's are the default. But, if this picks up, Dell may add a smaller one for Google Desktop and other extras not found on the regular repos for various reasons.
- tgunner, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3awwww.... I really want that web-cam.
- Kr4t05, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I honestly keep debating with myself on printing a few sheets of labels that read "Compatible with Ubuntu 7.04" and taking them to Walmart/Best Buy/ and sticking them on the products from nVidia, HP, and other Linux-friendly OEMs.
Granted, I'd end up doing a lot more shopping online as a result of it. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Are you kidding, Ubuntu is a secret MS Linux project. Rope 'em in with a free product, then charge and license the hell out of it when it hits the big time.
- Subterfug, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I hope what Dell is doing will be the incentive for Ubuntu and Linux to become as user friendly as Mac and Windows so that it will catch on in a big way.
- f54280, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3> I wouldn't be surprised to see more Linux Distros be added.
The biggest issue with linux is the support issue. Dell would be stupid to support two different distros.
With Microsoft moving into the hardware, Dell have no other issue than cost cutting. Going linux is a good strategy because:
1/ It drives cost down
2/ It give them leverage to discuss windows license costs in short and mid-term
3/ It differentiate them from competitors
The risky side is that hardware support is less than perfect in linux, which may reduce some of their choices. Also, small competitors can easily do ubuntu too.
Anyway, the best would be to have ubuntu on all the product line, not in some sort of separate store. This would make the offer credible.
It is so funny to see that microsoft went where they are by undercuting everybody on price 20 years ago. Now, they are undercut too, and there is not much they can do... - TehDoctor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yes. Amazing argument you make there. I am completely taken aback.
- polyGone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dang, thanks man. I have 7.04 on my laptop, but it won't function with the DE. My other machine is for school and I can't configure the partitions correctly. The last thing I need, is to nuke my windows partition. ( I have already done that twice) Ubuntu won't run 3ds max :(
- stonyhill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You save $50 over buying the Windows Vista version, but with the 1420n you don't have the option for webcam, discrete graphics, mobile broadband or BluRay.
- sephiroth965, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Honestly, I love beryl but the windows effects look much more unified(and I want flip3d so bad). Of course, I wouldn't pay money for them, but they're pretty good.
- leszek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1you can run photoshop and lots of games on Linux ...
- jwdav, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well at least somebody got the humour ....
