- ligyron, on 08/15/2008, -1/+27Dell's not the only one that just came.
- jonathandyer, on 08/15/2008, -1/+23Pic unrelated.
- Chipesh, on 08/15/2008, -0/+21The instant Linux desktop is a massive problem for MS. Even with a Windows laptop , having the ability to boot in a few seconds and browse the net without even starting Windows is a great feature which many will use.
Considering for many people browsing is all they do, they might start wondering why they are paying so much for the Windows bit.
Bob - larryjr88, on 08/15/2008, -0/+9No pics?
Burried as lame. Why read a 10 paragraph article that simply says what the title does. - phrenzy, on 08/15/2008, -2/+11dugg for
DELL JUST CAME - inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+8my head hurtz!
the description sounds like a puzzle - inactive, on 08/15/2008, -13/+21Everyone wants Dell to put Linux on everything. Yet, noone puts there money where there mouth is.
When these don't sell, please no whining about "more Linux" from the fanboys.
About to digg me down, then prove me wrong and buy one of these. - inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+8True, but it's come so far since then too. I remember playing with linux back in early 95. it's amazing how far it went from then till 98. crazy how far it's come since 98.
and hey! that's crazy! - neodorian, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7Still waiting for the "E" line to come out. Might finally get me to buy a netbook.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -2/+9I actually have two pc's running linux. I don't use them all the time, mainly because work gave me a laptop with windows software i need to do my job. sucks but thats reality. Maybe in the future, those apps will be made for linux and i can dump windows all together.
Why so angry at something totally free and more efficient than windows?
*and no the apps don't run properly on wine. - nzhamstar, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7That is sweet, but Is it just me, or does that look like a big plug to the Inquirer's main sponsor, Dell?
FTC:
"If you are thinking about buying one of these new Dell laptops, and especially if you live in the UK, can you please click on one of their ads across the Inquirer. Dell track all their advertising, and it would serously help our site performance and help encourage them to keep on investing in the site. " - afx1, on 08/15/2008, -4/+10"When these don't sell, please no whining about "more Linux" from the fanboys."
why would these windows laptops not sell? - iliketowin, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5"Dell went to great pains to avoid saying the L-word though, it might anger the very touchy gods atop mount Redmond."
What Microsoft doesn't like lesbians now? - sig331, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5What does this have to do with the Beijing Olympics logo?
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5Linux has gone really damn far. The only problem is it's all relative and it keeps gaining momentum. So though it grows slowly everyone always has to talk about how much momentum it's gained since day XX... I still have one or two pictures of anti MS ***** from around ~1994-1995 (Didn't take long.)
lol at the avatar match. - schotty, on 08/16/2008, -0/+5No insult, but says you.
I own two Macs and the happiest moment in recent times (kid's birth still wins out overall) was the vapage of OS X for Linux.
OS X to me was nothing but an apple version of Windows. Bloated (10.4 was good, 10.5 was awful), slow, and saw zero reason for the laggy performance when I have a 2.4Ghz 4GB DDR2-5300 system. I don't.
But now with CentOS on it, life is good again. The whole system updates, not just the apple parts and the programs when I run them. The system is much snappier. Now I just need to fix that moneysink MacBook and then I can drop Ubuntu or something on it. - DestroyFascism, on 08/16/2008, -0/+4Can't wait! An amazingly simple use of custom linux architecture to make a laptop last days instead of hours. Welcome abaord the new way of doing business. Open source.
- sloppychris, on 08/16/2008, -0/+4Lots of linux users have put their money where their mouth is. If the linux machines aren't selling, why does Dell continually debut more linux offerings?
- smacksaw, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4So ligyron made you come too? Did he double-fist you and Dell?
- mrgermy, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3I didn't read it all; didn't keep me interested.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3Wow, really? I bet you could...
- ubuwalker31, on 08/15/2008, -2/+5RTFA...some of the new models have a built in "instant on" flash based linux option to bypass Windows. Just in case you just want to quickly check your email and turn off your computer to save some battery life.
- slugicide, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3I'm guessing Instant-On Linux *will* end up on every Dell laptop in short order. Not only that, but I'll bet most of the other vendors will come up with their own version of the technology. They can't just sit back and let the Dell laptops get on the Internet in two seconds flat while it takes theirs two minutes. I'm lookin' at you, Apple.
- Rizzler, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3Good. As someone who has done support for Dell, I can say that you wont be missed. I'm profiling, but I'm sure you're one of those people that raises their voice when they're asked to check a simple setting, and turns out that they'll hang up on you when that actually was the issue. I'm only saying this because the greater portion of my submitted incidents were something stupid that someone was too ignorant to try and too arrogant to admit they were wrong.
I love IT. - madduffy, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3You beat me.
- slugicide, on 08/16/2008, -1/+4How long is it going to take Apple to put Instant-On on their PCs? Oops, I forgot, a Mac isn't a PC. It's a...a..personal c-ca..uh it's a--help me out here?
- stutimandal, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3Finally! Dell E4200 beats the hell out of other laptops in terms of looks. Very nice and slim design with no chick-flick type rounded corners. Dark and matte finish with no fingerprints.
- joeanon, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3Finally Linux used to do what it does best and proving it doesn't have to be direct competition.
- Ki77erB, on 08/15/2008, -3/+6Dug down for liking a different OS than you? I DO use linux as my full time OS. On my laptop and desktop...so what now? Are you gonna dig me down for that? Is your digging me down going to make me switch to Windows?
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -0/+2It works better on my new[er] Core 2 Duo machine than Windows does on it and Linux does on the old one. (Though Windows has problems because the Vista NVidia drivers... well, they sucked when i tried it anyways)
- phrenzy, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Damn you! I wanted to make that joke!
- ZachSka87, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Yeah....good thing this article talks about the "new dell mini laptop."
- compgeek, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2dugg simply for the new dell mini laptop it's funny after I saw it and after looking at reviews of the hp mini note and the new asus Eee I pretty much decided Dell is the way to go in the mini market now
- slugicide, on 08/16/2008, -0/+2They really did seem like they were afraid lightening was going to rip through the ceiling if they uttered the word "Linux." (from the video) What was even more ridiculous was that there was a tech reporter there who actually asked if Dell created Linux.
- uzusan, on 08/15/2008, -1/+3I think at least one factor is the reduced upgrade cycle for linux based machines. You can run linux on machines that are much older than those that can run xp or even vista. For example, say you have a 5 year old laptop, it would run linux perfectly (not sure about compiz, would depend on the spec). In this case, why buy a new laptop when you can get linux for free and run it well.
- krisrm, on 08/16/2008, -0/+2Dell's arrogance can be annoying. After being nearly sold on a Dell laptop with 4GB of memory, then being told on the phone that "there's no WAY anyone would want to use a 64 bit operating system on a 'home' machine (32 bit can't use 4GB of memory)," I think I'll stick with HP or Gateway... who still make cheap computers, but they don't act like they know everything.
- theCreator79, on 08/15/2008, -2/+4I think I heard that comment in 1998... hey you copied my avatar!!

- mrsteveman1, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2These are Penguin powered not dolphin powered.
- mrsteve007, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2I ordered one of the 14.1 LED lappys for my company yesterday. It'll be interesting to try out the new monitor dock. It looks quite impressive, but I'm still waiting on the new quad-core, 16 gig ram, precision 'laptops' they've announced. Those look to be a game changer when it comes to desktop render stations vs. laptops. We're looking to dramatically cut our power consumption. Our current Dell precision desktops consume ~300 watts while idle. Their precision laptops do the same with ~60 watts. Company wide, that's a dramatic savings in annual power costs - more than enough to cover the increase in cost of the unit over it's desktop equivalent.
- drgruney, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2It's not a laptop... but I'm on an OSS Dell desktop. The Vostro is a nice little machine for a nice little price.
- jack12345678910, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2thank you ki77erb, you are very gracious. yes i have tried ubuntu, 3 different times and 3 different distros the last being hardy heron, i tried very hard to like it. but ultimately it was too annoying, let me list the reasons
in case of tl;dr - linux annoyed me, i love xp, the end.
-too annoying to install applications, theres like 4 different dot extensions for installs
-tried literally for days to get compiz fusion/beryl to work, but was basically impossible
-too many bugs/in development programs
-apps are too unstable, crashed all the time
-no support for video card, not linux's fault i guess but thats what it was
-can easily pirate xp
-xp is extremely stable and familiar
-linux is not supported by most software
-i haven't tried wine or other emu's but i doubt they work as well as xp seeing as how most linux apps are so damn buggy
-linux had no mouse scroll wheel adjust, after surfing linux for a while, my fingers ached very badly because i had to scroll fives times as much. i saw in forums that many people ask for it too but no one has made one yet for some reason.
-a lot of websites do not support linux and its insanely annoying to find a way to make it work.
-everytime i wanted to do anything i had to surf endless forums and screw around for HOURS before it would work. that really drove me crazy.
-no game support but its ok with me because i dual booted it.
-lastly and most importantly, there is no strong incentive to switch. xp is perfect and free for me. its supported. also i don't really get viruses or spyware because i know how to protect it.
the only advantages to linux are that it is free, and does not have a lot of spyware/viruses. but those things do not affect me at all. i'm sure MOST people also won't trade 100 dollars for a huge amount of frustration.
these are the main reasons why linux won't become main stream
- too difficult to use for regular people(im probably as close as it gets to programmer without being one and i still found linux hard). all linux distros should come standard with a manual that clearly shows step by step to do most things instead of making you have to surf endless forums.
- linux needs a double click install, most people can't use console. that is why GUI took off.
- xp is cheap enough and comes bundled with store bought systems which is where most people get their computers.
-no strong incentive to switch, americans can't even go to metric for god sakes. how can they switch something as complex as an os.
-no app/game support - sqrt7744, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2whatever, it's funny.
- TankerJoe, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Hmmm.. I bought a laptop from Dell with Ubuntu on it, so I wouldn't exactly say "noone".
- Greengoo, on 08/15/2008, -4/+5If you read the article, the computers are actually Michael Phelps.
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1No, I'm a programmer who can solve his own issues (Well, I've had a few that i can't solve) and i hate it when i call my ISP and they make us go through ***** IP config. (Although I have a Windows machine around to do it, it's retarded, i've already exhausted those kinds of problems by the time i've called.)
The reason i won't buy from DELL is the OS's branding and bloatware preinstalled, and it often costs more than custom built.
So you're profiling doesn't work on me. - inactive, on 08/16/2008, -0/+1Until Linux distributions unify on certain issues, Yeah, It's a bumpy ride. Don't use Linux if you can't - but if you have the time try because it WILL come in use - having a system that extensible can come in use at the most random times.
- mttyd, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1I think Linux is great and has its uses. I just hate fanboyism and feel fanboyism is the reason people actually think Macs are worth spending 2x for.
