- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -12/+85It is excellent news that people can get a good deal on a computer that is not infected with Vista.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -6/+53We should be thanking Slashdot for pointing out this mistake.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21I'm pretty sure that for Dell, Vista costs less than $50.
- Disfnord, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22what's with the "i" at the end? Are you a 14 year old girl?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Nero have a very good native version for Linux, there's no need of wine.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Everybody deserves linux.
- mtaylor314, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Vista might cost you 150, but I'm sure Dell is paying a lot less than 150. That is the power of buying in bulk.
- imran7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I'm pretty sure that for Dell, Vista costs less than $50.... oh wait, that was already said, in a comment RIGHT ABOVE YOURS
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Uhh... envious isn't a noun.
- handsoffme, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Actually, Vista probably really does only cost Dell somewhere around $50 (although theres a possibility that someone will shut me up with a link proving otherwise; I didn't do any pre-post research). Think wholesale pricing...
- martoq, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13What I find amusing is that this was reported 45 days ago and everyone that actually commented pretty much said it was *****. Ironic. Here's the original digg story: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Is_something_fishy_going_on_over_at_Dell
- kethraal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10"vista costs 150, so dell pockets the 100 difference on every laptop sold."
Not for the OEM's... it probably costs close to... well... 50 dollars. - asforme, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I doubt that Dell pays more than $50 for OEM Vista.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Not only is it wholesale, but most likely dell gets deals from companies who put trial versions and bloatware on the computer.
- deadlikeoscar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Wow, that must be thrilling...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+14If you like DRM/activation/WGA/spyware, absurd prices, outrageous system requirements, and a horrid EULA, then Vista is for you.

http://slated.org/vista_is_worlds_most_expensive_spyware - honds, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Just so you know... OEM retail is an oxymoron.
But yeah, in any case, the college I attended gets Windows for ~$7... I expect Dell is the same or less. - deadlikeoscar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Except for skaspud. That's the kind of crap that doesn't help our cause at all.
- deadlikeoscar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6So buy a laptop from them. You can't do much with those anyway. :-)
- deadlikeoscar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'm going to submit alenm88's comment to Think Geek for a tshirt idea and then have them print Megatog615's comment on the back.
- Trel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Yes, but apparantly Ubuntu is a vanilla install while vista has proloaded stuff which saves them money.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6You can buy OEM retail copies of Windows Vista Home Premium for $150. I'm not sure how licensing works for OEMs but I'm sure Dell doesn't pay a lot for Vista.
- aaronroe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5My next laptop will be a pre-loaded Linux laptop. Dell or Lenova...we'll see.
- ThreeDee912, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Nope. No craplets on a Ubuntu system from Dell. There was a another Digg story somewhere about that...
- psynyd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Nope no craplets on the Ubuntu Dells. Hooray!
- Wade, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5'Ain't nobody understand the words that's comin' outta your mouth.'
I assume you also think nobody cares about whatever you don't. - bobartig, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Right, only IT professionals, software developers, and anybody who's ever used the internet. I'm assuming you're posting via snail mail...
- deadlikeoscar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yeah you can get a serial for Nero Linux for like 29 bucks or something like that or you can use your Windows one if you have one. I use K3B because it is awesome but I have thought about installing Nero and buying a key for it since they are actually developing software for Linux. I hope more companies follow their lead. I'm looking at you Adobe.
- PatrickBrown, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Don't begin your ***** Microsoft / Apple fanboy ***** with me. I am a Linux nerd, damn it!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+12You don't have to be a Linux "fanboi" to know Vista is trash.
- iZealot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I support there move to selling Ubuntu, but I will never buy a laptop with it preloaded. I support Linux because I believe in customer choice, not because I'm a user.
- Megatog615, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5What are you Exhibit A in the retard museum?
- oldman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You know, you can reply to a specific person, instead of making us all guess who you're talking to. As for me I use Fedora now, but have on occasion used Ubuntu, Sabayon, Knoppix. If that makes any difference to you. ( I did use M$, before I retired)
- PatrickBrown, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Unless they have a techy friend that helps them order. I have no problem putting my family and friends on Ubuntu.
- rustyryan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2At least Dell admits when it makes a mistake. Definitely a respectable move.
- Philter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Watching encrypted BluRay or HDDVD movies without an HDMI video card that supports HDPC.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Does Dell load up the Ubuntu notebooks with all those craplets? It would be worth it just to avoid having to remove all that ***** every time you buy a new Dell.
- Zero82z, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Keep in mind the fact that Dell also makes a lot of money from the extra software they put on their Windows PCs(all the extra junk is essentially paid advertising), so they may even be losing money by giving a discount.
- KahNeth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I care
- splintax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2As others have mentioned, they could easily be making LESS money on Ubuntu machines since they don't have the 'craplets' on them that Dell gets paid to install.
- tnoy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Dell probably pays more than $50 for the copy of vista, but companies pay dell to have their trialware installed on the machines offset the cost of Vista. You cant get around the fact that Windows is not that large of a factor in the cost of a machine from a major manufacturer.
- fluxion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2haha, Dell can't seem to catch a break with this whole linux thing. this has gotta be like the 4th public apology.
in any case, glad to see that Dell is genuinely committed to giving us a nice and fairly priced linux offering. - crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3In fairness, it's right above him, so he probably didn't see it.
- Samtheman007, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yay, another one for the blocked list!
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Canonical deals with support.
- wsycng, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4what have you been smoking?
- starsky51, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@ThreeDee: Great. Thanks for your insight. This suggestion has been made and shot down a few hundred times on Digg, so far.
- stonyhill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dell can make this really easy for themselves, by making Ubuntu an OS choice from their applicable Home and Small Business systems (with a "won't run your windows software" warning for the average clueless customer)
- arjie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If it costs less than $50, then they're saving us more than the cost of just the OS, meaning they're actually subsidising Ubuntu computers. How nice!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2$50 is not much of a savings. Well, it won't make any non-techy switch from Windows.
