- armo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Disappointing there's no laptops available. I'm shopping around for a laptop atm and would rather not pay MS tax.
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11No Laptops?? What are they thinking, the main market to begin with for Linux on dell is the geek crowd. We make our own Desktops, the demand is for laptops.
GRRR when these don't sell well I hope they don't pull Linux in the UK, just release a couple of laptops and the sales will grow - Bloc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5and pay £70 less..?
- pHr34kY, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Dell tax? You'd be a pretty dumb manufacturer if you didn't put any margin in your product. Besides, the Ubuntu machines are cheaper than the same hardware with Vista.

For full information about Dell on Ubuntu see www.ubuntu.com/dell
For Ubuntu in France see (from August 8th) www.dell.fr/ubuntu
For Ubuntu in Germany see (from August 8th) www.dell.de/ubuntu
For Ubuntu in United Kingdom see (from August 8th) www.dell.co.uk/ubuntu - bigtomrodney, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4But although the article claims two desktops will be available this quote says otherwise -
"The two machines will be relatively inexpensive: the Inspiron 6400n will cost £329, while the 530n will cost £399."
The Inspiron 6400n is a notebook. - chavkiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2the 6400 is a laptop doh!
- armo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Is this a UK store? All the prices are in USD.
- Garfunkel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My mistake in my previous post, I did not notice the lappy available, however it appears that Dell screwed up their site and hasn't done much about it so far...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1and this one made it to the front page where as the other one will be in upcoming stories purgatory
- drag, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Seems to me that they are selling Dell Laptops in the UK.
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/emea/segments/gen/client/en/ubuntu_landing?c=uk&l=en&s=gen
although the website seems a bit messed up also. - MaHaGoN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Just because you have seen better doesn't mean it's bad. My 15.4 inch is 1280x800, works fine for me.
- twtmc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1wtf, still no Canada?
- richardiscool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1IBM sold the Thinkpad division to Lenovo.
- Garfunkel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Disappointing there are no lappies, they better bring them to aussie soon...
- CCmachined, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1where can i find the models? i searched ubuntu on dell's site in the UK and all i found was:
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/alliances/en/linux?c=uk&cs=ukgent1&l=en&s=gen
at the bottom it says about ubuntu pre-installed .... where can i buy??? - diggsIt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dell is having problems delivering laptops in the US. They've been delaying and canceling orders because of some supply-line problems.
- Wootery, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I imagine delivery would cost more than the Windows-tax.
- rocktorrentz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You can change to the dual core processors and change the wireless card to a different one on the next page. However all the processors offered are old, I don't know why they aren't offering any Core2Duo processors on the only linux PC they sell.
- armo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thanks for that, I really should learn not to trust what I read in these articles.

CORRECTIONS:
desktops AND laptops will be available today!!! In the UK, Germany and France. http://ubuntu.com and tis right there! - notantspants, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm confused!! Why are people saying no notebooks. the 6400 is a notebook. Plus .....
http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/08/07/23816.aspx says it's an Inspiron 6400 noteboook which I can find on Dell's site.
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/zdnet/20070807/ttc-dell-launches-linux-pcs-in-the-uk-20a87fa_1.html says it's an Inspiron 6400n which I can't find on Dell's site.
1280x800 is that a good resolution for a 15,4 inch monitor? Looks too low for me. Am used to 17 and 20" monitors. - oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1approximately 6% of us apparently. if those 6% are looking to buy on linux supported hardware, this would concentrate the sales into a niche market. therefore dell would do well to support linux well on a lot of machines if they want to establish themselves as linux friendly at this early stage.
there are a few corporations i can think of who have established themselves as linux-unfriendly and it often takes a lot to shake off the tag in the minds of consumers over the course of years. - mogydy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1it is still in the making, just check again soon. today is the first day it was even announced :)
- dw2005, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Finally?!? its only been like 3 months since they started offering Ubuntu in the US. Finally should be used for things like Gmail going out of beta.
- m1bxd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1At a 47% premium - come on Michael..
- CCmachined, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you forget computers with windows are much more expensive than that?
there are probably taxes involved, meh. - jezmck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not enough mention of Rip-Off Britain -
An extra 47% for us Brits to buy the same thing! - TexanPsycho, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why can't they be released on the same day or at least in the same week. The same goes for the iPhone.
- Lawbringer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I did check the dupe warning however it didn't show the other story. having only submitted a couple to stories i'll see if i can bury this one and props to the other story
- Jimbob0i0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Same ccmachined1 - I am actually interested in the Inspiron (current lappie is an old Inspiron 2650) and thought it'd make a nice moving pressie for the wife.... but I guess they haven't put details up yet since searching for 6400n shows no results found.
- Lawbringer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Do people ever read i'm the damn submitter, I'm sorry i didn't realise it was a dupe. Oh well looks like it's too late now.
- realstraw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0www.dell.co.uk/ubuntu, and then? no further page is available for further information
- realstraw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0if you follow the link on this page http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/emea/segments/gen/client/en/ubuntu_landing?c=uk&l=en&s=gen
it says the page might have been removed... - f0dder, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2No MS tax, but people will gladly bend over for the Dell tax. How come it's not possible to build a laptop like one can a desktop?
- drag, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Post buried for being pointless weirdness.
- cramstick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0system76 don't ship the the UK, although i think they intend to do so in the not-so-distant future.
- keyo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0No I've seen that (WXGA) on 13" and my 14" Laptop has that res.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1too late its on the front page oh well at least yours was a news story and not a link to dell's web site so props for that
- keyo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0ME!
- realstraw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0if you follow the link on this page http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/emea/segments/gen/client/en/ubuntu_landing?c=uk&l=en&s=gen
it says the page might have been removed... - cricoste90, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Buried as Delux (Dell-Linux) spam.
- chilio, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0The spec is below par in today's standard. Can only choose Celeron M520 for CPU otherwise will get a compatibility issue with the mini PCI wireless card.
so... either get a slow laptop or a little bit faster one without wireless? tough decision to make there. - keyo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0What a crappy website, where can one actually go to buy one. They seem to make sure it's all hiden away. Click the link for Dell and Ubuntu and it goes to the USA site. Useless, dell can do better than this.
- hiro, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Pointless
- Jwoey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1May i just say, I agree with the title.
FINALLY, Gahhhh. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1I really dont see any advantages in this linux deal, seems more like dell is desperate for attention
- spydon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Check out the laptops on www.system76.com :)
- joltjake, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Oh yes, I'm sure the Brits have been waiting for this, because we all know how hard it is to get a free linux distro and install it on any pc............
- code2joy, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Yes, but who wants to use LINUX?
