- makickal, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19Dell's foreign staff is not even aware that windows is installed...
- redrock34, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18I'm not surprised. The Ubuntu section in Dell's website is practically hidden.
"The main thing to note is that when you choose open source you don’t get a Windows® operating system. If you’re here by mistake and you are looking for a Dell PC with Windows, please use the following link." Yes, turn around you morons Vista is that way!
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/ubuntu?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs - arizonagroove, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14"Dell could care less"
True, they could not even bother to sell it at all.
Or were you doing that thing where people say 'could care less' but in fact mean the exact opposite, 'could not care less'? - deadowl, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Actually, Dell loses some money by selling PCs with Ubuntu from preloaded software. Fortunately, I think they started using that money to subsidize all of their PCs rather than only their Windows PCs. It's bad accounting, good PR.
- Ares, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/09/07/dell_linux_ubuntu_red_hat_but_where/
please link to the actual story from The Reg. Not your adsense harvest attempt - darkNiGHTS, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10They are prohibited by Microsoft from advertising it. I'm not surprised.
- justlook, on 10/10/2007, -9/+18Dell could care less. It's just less money they have to give Microsoft on every PC sale.
- Authustian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Thank you, come again.
- TheG2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+817" is heavy, and the whole idea behind a laptop is portability (well, for most people)
- enchantedsky, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Just something funny related to this article: I called Dell Support to tell them my DVD burner stopped reading discs and was making grinding sounds, and that I needed a new drive. I informed them I have Ubuntu installed in my computer. The representative then wanted me to edit Windows registry settings to try to get the drive working. It's almost like he had no idea what Ubuntu was, and more stupidly enough, it was a hardware problem that has nothing to do with software settings. (Obviously a broken DVD drive) I decided from this point on, I will not buy a Dell again.
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7That's odd, I just priced an Inspiron 1420 with Vista vs. Ubuntu and with Vista it's $869 and with Ubuntu it's $744.
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Because supporting Dell with Ubuntu is forcing hardware makers to support Linux with drivers.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Nice blogspam, *****.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Did you see how completely wrong that post was? He IS a moron.
- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6No, Dell has to pay MS a licensing fee for every computer they sell that has their software on it.
- grapesofbaath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Of course Dell doesn't care about Ubuntu, Dell cares about selling computers. Offering Linux is just a way to sell more computers.
The REAL question is, is Dell offering Ubuntu because tons of people are clamoring for Linux, or is it because they can now sell the computers cheaper without Windows, NOT to the Linux fanboys, but to the Windows pirates. - Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And not everybody likes a giant screen, either. I want a bigass screen on my desktop that has all the power, and my notebook to be as portable as possible (unfortunately, my 15" MBP fulfills neither requirement). Some people want a big laptop as a desktop replacement. Everyone wants something different - get used to it.
- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The warnings are for idiots who would accidentally click a button and the call tech support 800 times asking why they can't run Internet explorer. People who want linux are going to look for it. Dell wants 2 things, to make people aware if that accidentally click the Ubuntu button, and to keep the button from being an easy thing to accidentally click.
- Xilon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Sure, I didn't expect it to get off the ground, but Lenovo is thinking of shipping Ubuntu and HP started as well, didn't they?... Seems companies are warming up to Linux.
- MrSteamTank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Working as a call center as a customer service rep let me tell you that technical support reps generally incredibly conceited. They think they know everything about computers and trying to have a conversation with one about technical problems is downright frustrating. Problem is their training consists of 3 weeks in a room being shown slides and what the other tech support reps tell them. Every single person their thinks they are a genius and that everybody else thats not in tech support doesn't know how to press the start button on their computer. Man I have to leave this job because boy does it suck. 8P
- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Step 1) Go to dell.com
Step 2) Enter the term "ubuntu" into the search box and press enter.
Step 3) Click "Shop for Ubuntu."
Step 4) . . .
Stetp 5) Profit. - andysep47, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4if you drive 17" is quite portable, but u better forget about it if you are taking a bus
- Langford, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The point being made is that dell is making no real effort to sell Linux as an alternative to Windows. Someone who knows what they are looking for beforehand is going to be able to search for it, but and average user will never be aware of it's existence.
- andycr512, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Vista on Pavilion DV9000t with 1GB ram: 1.5 hour battery life, aero off.
Ubuntu on Pavilion DV9000t with 1GB ram: 3 hour battery life, beryl ON. - Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Way to slide that Anti-Apple slag in there.
- drmsucks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4C'mon, guys! To alert a (potential) customer that their new computer will not have Windows if they order it with Ubuntu and, further, that most of the software that they are used to using will not run on Ubuntu is just, plain honest. I suspect that a lot of the people ordering Ubuntu machines are not aware of these two facts and would be mighty pissed AT DELL when they got their new machines that they couldn't operate and that none of their acquaintances could operate or help them with.
As for the "Dell doesn't love Linux" whiners, You're right! Dell sells hardware - not OS's. So let's give credit where credit is due: Dell was the first major hardware seller to offer a Linux option and this move is now being copycatted by the other major sellers. Good for you, Dell. - dpmcalli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I know its frustrating but if youve ever worked in support before youll know that your not allowed to deviate from the script even if you know damn well its a hardware fault and your wasting your time tring to do any kind of trouble shooting.
Of course, not realising that you weren't using a windows machine was in-excusable.... - thebeefytaco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4most people are saying you get less battery life with ubuntu, but in xp my laptop generally gets 2 - 3 hrs and in ubuntu it gets 4 - 5
- zeejay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Why do so many people have a hate-on for 17" notebooks? A video editing machine that can do 720p HD work (with plenty of room for palettes), that fits in a laptop bag and travels well, is pretty kick-ass for some people's line of work. Like mine. Not all of us need to tote the things across campus every day, some of us drive or fly where we need to go, and the size is a piece of cake.
- Megatog615, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Moron.
- theOster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+417" are fine if you dont leave your house. you bring that thing to starbucks and it will be the last time you leave the house with it.
- trwww, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There is a team just for Ubuntu hardware support: http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.04
- macewan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Come on is dell.com/ubuntu or dell.com/linux that difficult to locate?
If somone is having that much trouble locating these computers then they don't need to be shopping at Dell - Apple.com would be more appropriate. - theworldisflat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Power consumption has more to do with eyecandy (graphical requirement stress) and what you do with it (play dvd's, etc) than the base OS...
- ethanpeirce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I agree. I was a technical support manager for a Dell call center and all of these idiots thought they were top ***** when in actuallity, the only computer knowledge they had is from the walkthrough tools they have. Most don't even know how to reinstall ***** drivers. Training sucks too. Why would you let a bad rep train new hires???
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+9A 17" Laptop? No thanks.
- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That said, Ubuntu (and many Linux distros) has issues with laptop power management because of the wild inconsistency of hardware and how often it's built around Windows - I know for a fact that Sony VAIOs cause particular problems (I own one). Dell might be alright, as they will have built specific power management software for their linux line.
- unknownstuntman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4bollocks, INFORMATION is what the net is all about.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That's _couldn't_ care less.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dell Linux and Windows support is separate! Call the Dell Linux support number and you'll be amazed on how energetic and smart the people on the other end are. Different people.
- WhiteTigerEyes, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I have no idea why some of you are saying that ubunut PC's are buried on Dell's site... There are two "Open Source PC's" links in their top menu.. one under "Desktops" and one under "Notebooks"..
- soulslave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I hate 17" laptops, unless all you do is sit them on a desk all day. My 14" is perfect for when I am at a clients site jacking into the routers, doing config changes... I would hate a huge bulky laptop, totally defeats the purpose.
- SteveMax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I thought the point of a laptop was to be portable. Why would you carry a 5kg, 17 inch monster with a 40 minute battery?
- Smiths, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Never underestimate, or overestimate, the consumer. I'm sure someone would click on Open Source because they know it's free, then return it when it's not Windows. There's no doubt in my mind that it would/will happen.
- Sheetz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2listen, i know everyone on digg has their panties all in a bunch and loves linux but can you really blame dell? the normal dell customer has little to no computer expertise and just orders whats in their price range. dell almost has to include warnings like "does not come with windows" so that when people see the lower price tag they realize why
- pt4117, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I can't blame them for giving all of the warnings. Most people, that buy from Dell, don't know what Ubuntu is. I really don't see that being a big deal.
- sabach, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There's these things called databases. They're quite handy for looking up sales info.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Good for you. If you need a giant notebook with a lot of power, then get one. I want something as portable as possible. It's not like there's only one model in the world, so we can each get what we want.
You must have forgotten that little caveat about digg: "I'm absolutely right, and you're absolutely wrong unless you completely agree with me". - tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2XP on my T42 generally has a bout 15-20% more battery life than when using Ubuntu. This is after following every howto I could find in my search for whatever could be causing the excess draw. I have a feeling its due to the Radeon in it; ATI's windows driviers probably have better power saving features.
- Megatog615, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 and I get about 5 hours if I tweak it right.
