- tnoy, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3Dell isn't here to be your friend, they're here to make money. They can charge whatever they want for their machines, if you don't like it, don't buy form Dell.
- cday, on 08/21/2008, -1/+3I honestly don't understand why anyone would want to buy a GNU/Linux machine from Dell. Maybe business owners can do better with Dells than ordinary home-computer owners, I have no way of knowing, but I just see no benefit in supporting Dell's half-hearted Ubuntu offerings. If a person or company wants Windows, then maybe buying from Dell makes more sense.
In my area there are computer builders that sell barebones machines without a pre-installed OS. In spite of all the silly people declaring that Linux distros are "too hard for Jane or Joe User," the truth is that installation is dead-simple with modern distros like Ubuntu or Mandriva, and paid support is always available. DIY system setups are way easier than most people think. Even my step-mom does it by herself. It ain't rocket science.
There are also plenty of small computer companies to be found online (let Google be your guide) that specialize in quality Linux systems. I've found them in every price range and style, plenty of customizations available too (and no I'm not going to spam this thread with links...if I can find them on my own, so can others if they try).
Michael Dell is a two-faced waffling weenie that's just playing games with his customers. Unless you just want a cookie-cutter Windows machine, why bother with his company at all? - oomfoofoo, on 08/21/2008, -1/+2ubuntu fanboys won't be happy until Dell gives the machines away for free, though they'll probably still find something to bitch about.
- daddymcguire, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1Maybe it's just me, but I hit the link to the Dell site in the article and I didn't see the option for Ubuntu as an operating system.
- daddymcguire, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1Why do you hate Ubuntu so much? You keep burying stuff related to Ubuntu and/or insulting the OS. Were you an Ubuntu developer that got fired or something?
