get off your high horse, who are you to say what a true linux user would or should do... - trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35@ http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/cto_inspn_e1505?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
The only option for a graphics card is ATI... Hopefully this will change. - jayakumark, on 10/11/2007, -3/+30Links for all 3 are

- sishgupta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Jeez 20,000 systems or 1% of their sales...
I can't decide if that is a lot or not. I don't know the plan, but I would love to see some Dell advertising supporting the fact that Ubuntu is an option. Not just web ads either. I would like to see a little notice somewhere on a print version, like an icon or logo. And maybe a little blub about it on a TV or radio spot - trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20I will.
- kalidav, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Is anyone going to buy these though?
- avatarpalin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I don't care, perhaps this will be a way for Linux to get some recognition from the non tech savvy crowed.. For some reason most non tech people I talk to about linux assume that it's terrible because it's free..
- MioTheGreat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Probably not sue. But people who don't know any better (read: average computer user) might get very pissed off when their iTunes, or Weatherbug, etc. don't work.
This could actually hurt Linux on the Desktop. It'll be very interesting to see how it plays out. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13"avatarpalin, the non-tech-savvy crowd will be the crowd trying to get all their Windows applications to work in Linux and call tech support to ask where the Start button and Internet went."
Yeah? Then why don't Mac users do this?
And furthermore, do you honestly think there's going to be any non-tech-savvy people buying these things?
Trust me, this isn't going to be a problem. - Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Seriously, what is Dell thinking? They have tons of laptops with Intel cards in them - you know, cards that work. I don't see any reason why they would offer a crappy malfunctioning ATI card instead.
Actually, this leads me to believe that perhaps this blog post is inaccurate, and these aren't actually the models that Dell will be selling. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14I'd personally like to see the price difference since we won't have to pay the Microsoft Tax anymore on these systems.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12That isn't the point, the point is that the hardware is going to be guaranteed supported, with open source drivers for all but possibly the graphics card. As for your comment on eliminating any legal dual boot options, WTF are you talking about?
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Paranormalized - Yea, and pigs are going to be flying. I'll believe it when I see it, and not a moment sooner.
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12trogdoor - Yea. I'm not sure why they would do that when they could offer a model with Intel graphics instead. On the upside, maybe some people will give Dell poor feedback about the crappy drivers and Dell can pressure AMD into releasing documentation so the community can write drivers that work.
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I dunno. The 1505 comes with an ATI X1400 graphics card, which is the family of graphics card with the single *worst* driver of any card I've used on Ubuntu. You're paying extra compared to an Intel card, and you'll get way worse performance, stability, and functionality.
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12This is actually amusing - you're both wrong. First, Intel processors are great because it means you can get an Intel chipset with Intel graphics - AMD can't compete with that (for an Ubuntu solution) until they release the interface docs for their ATI video cards. Second, in the price range we're talking about here AMD is still quite competitive on processor price/performance - there isn't a strict Intel advantage until you get into processors over $200.
- uzusan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10How about you go to the technology section, then the linux / unix section and sort by most popular stories in the last 365 days and then look at how many of the stories around 300 days ago mention ubuntu.
I think you'll find its a lot more than most other distributions.
I mean you are talking about the time when 6.06 LTS came out (i.e. june 06), which is when ubuntu really took off. - Paranormalized, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11ATI is going to be open sourcing their Linux drivers:
http://enterpriselinuxlog.blogs.techtarget.com/2007/05/09/amd-will-deliver-open-graphics-drivers/ - jayakumark, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17I personally like to have inspiron 6400 or inspiron 640m to be preloaded with ubuntu.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I believe that Canonical is dealing with the support side of things.
- cenarta, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11ATI, yuck.
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"had a bad experience with dell in the past"
It's okay. I just need you to use the PDA to show the jury where he touched you. - ZaNkY, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10XPS eh? That's sounds great! If Dell loads Ubuntu on a gaming PC (even a midrange one), then I can easily see Hardware manufacturers being pumped for good drivers. The 410 comes with an option of an ATI card (x1300), If Dell hassles ATI/AMD for better 3D drivers....
Nvidia's drivers are already decent (though closed source), but there's always room for improvement. I can't believe Dell is really doing all this....
XPS 410: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_410?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19 - robdazomba, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7> I'd personally like to see the price difference since we won't have to pay
> the Microsoft Tax anymore on these systems.
My prediction is that Dell will leave the cost comparable to Windows machines so as not to ruffle any feathers at MS. Also, why should Dell lower prices when there is almost no competition in the market for machines with Linux preloaded? And given that they expect to sell so few machines (relatively speaking) I can't see that they're concerned about making the machines as attractive as possible. Further, they are probably looking at covering the costs of doing this in the first place (yes, there are costs associated with expanding your product line even if the OS is free.) In a few years, maybe. With a little more competition, maybe.
I give Dell points for doing this to begin with, but if any of you are expecting significantly lower prices because the OS costs less, you're dreaming. - invader, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@fatas
I've never bought a pre-built desktop.. But if this Linux project is more successful than they anticipate, it would lead to events that would make Linux actually ready for the desktop. I would consider buying a Linux Dell, even if it's just to help incubate a market for Linux.
Linux needs support from mainstream suppliers to get more users, to get more hardware support, and to get more applications. A true Linux user would want the platform to mature, and this Dell . However, judging by your comment, maturity may not be something you have a firm understanding of. - DigitalDud, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I hope its not the 1505 with ATI x1400, Ubuntu's Xorg likes to crash on that laptop.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I shall buy this.
- wired4u, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I need a new laptop and might buy this buy it has an ATI card, how well is that going to work unless ATI gave dell better drivers somehow.
- darthsabbath, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Couldn't tell you, I've never been there. Dell's small business group (to the best of my knowledge) is all based in the United States and Canada.
- amrush4th, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Yes, we are excited that Dell is doing this. even though it is less then 1% of what they offer, its one step in the direction of Linux being considered as it should be, a mainstream OS. Sure Linux is taking baby steps, but as long as it keeps moving forward it is a positive step in the computing world. People that are not into computers even thought they use them every day need to feel that what they use is 'normal' and sometimes its very hard to convince people of this without the support of major sources. Dell for example. When I can show someone that a major vendor is using Ubuntu, then when I explain that Ubuntu is a viable option for them they will take more time to consider if it is the right choice for them. For me the more options the better, and its about time Linux gets a fair chance to show what it has to offer.
- Kickersny, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@inbred: "The ultimate win for Linux will be getting high-profile games ported over."
Hell, even just the Steam client would be a nice start. After all, none of the Steam games can be ported without the client... - ewetubing, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@mrisi
Umm...dude?
If you buy a copy of Windows at BestBuy or Walmart or anywhere else, then you can RUN IT LEGALLY on your PC. This even includes dual-booting situations.
You probably oughta file this information deep within your "No *****, Sherlock!" file. That is where it belongs. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5The ultimate win for Linux will be getting high-profile games ported over.
- fluxion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Ubuntu has gotten such an insane amount of good press lately it's ridiculous. your comment has no basis in reality.
nice Windows avatar btw - redxii, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7In India maybe.
- afx1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Would be nice if the linux systems had lower support costs for Dell than the Windows systems (less customers calling in with spyware issues), which would in turn make Dell want to promote them more.
- zeejay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Now people just need to BUY the damn things and send a message.
The Linux community likes "free", and talks a good game on the message boards - let's see if they can put their money where their mouth is. I'd love to see this take off, but will admit that I'm a bit skeptical. I hope I'm wrong.
In other news, Dell is now aggressively seeking Linux crapware developers, to offset their losses on that front. :) - moocow1452, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4A Linux computer from Dell presumably under $300...
Wow. - Amablue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"avatarpalin, the non-tech-savvy crowd will be the crowd trying to get all their Windows applications to work in Linux and call tech support to ask where the Start button and Internet went.

If they were to put some advertising into it, they'd draw in people who aren't tech savvy as most of Digg. The reason that it doesn't happen with Apple is because Apple is more recognized and people are familiar with it a little, even if they don't use it on a regular basis. - darthsabbath, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I'm still curious as to how they're going to roll out support. My company does support for Dell's small business segment, and we haven't had ANYTHING announced about this. Does anyone know if this Ubuntu deal is only for the consumer segment? Granted, for all I know, they could spring this on us 3 days ahead of time and off we go on a mad rush of training.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Two button touchpad instead of three button. ATI video card. I wouldn't be looking at that laptop if I were buying from any other Linux hardware seller. Why would I look at it from Dell?
- afx1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3even if there is some sugar coated interface, just having more users using linux means more incentive for windows-only software publishers to consider porting to linux.
- eatmorgnome, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Well, it doesn't appear the Sonic makes their garbage gimpware burning software for Linux, so maybe there is hope.
- uzusan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Im pretty sure dell said about a week ago that the ubuntu based models will be cheaper, but they did not say by how much. (i cant find the link at the moment)

That's a joke, right? - Stonekeeper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You know, I'm guessing that Canonical and Dell's meetings didn't have "Use worst supported hardware" on the agenda. My guess is that canonical has spent moolah to get these working just right. It's in their both their interests.
