- nanostream, on 10/22/2007, -2/+114As mentioned before, the Dell partnership equals better device support for Linux users. =)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+79Who needs ATI? They won't support Linux, so don't use their products, use Nvidia instead.
- swooshonln, on 10/10/2007, -1/+52Hey, if it takes Dell to open up ATI to the linux community, whatever. It needs to be done.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+46Title should read" everyone is sick of not having decent ati drivers in linux, so they now buy nvidia products"
- EuphopiaB, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Yes!
I own an R600 (Oil).
I run Ubuntu (Water).
Things like this make me very happy. - tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18I love Dell now. My next computer will be a Dell!
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Go get 'em, Mike!
- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Even ATi's Windows drivers are *****.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16I use only Nvidia cards because i use only linux...Also, i think Nvidia in general makes better cards and cares more about it's customers than AMD/ATI
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15How does the driver make them money. I thought they made money from the hardware
- idonthack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14They should probably start providing some then.
- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18try to keep him at +1 just to leave the request unanswered.
- spikeb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I wonder how hard they can pressure AMD over it
- generalloy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Why doesn't Dell pay the open source Avivo and r300 developers directly? Cut out the ATI middle-man.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I believe Dell got us a decent Linux driver for Conexant modem chipsets...I haven't used a modem in like 5 years, but that's still cool.
- homanh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Reverse Psychology PWNS diggers yet again... *sigh*
- cquilliam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I think what Dell is doing is great. For the longest time I have considered Dell to be the "AOL" of computer manufacturers. But these latest moves with linux and sponsering podcasts on the twit network have really changed my attitude for them. I guess its mission accomplished. I may consider purchasing my next computer from them.
- gravis86, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Yep. I'd be running Linux on my MacBook Pro if it didn't have an ATI GPU in it.
- RoboHobo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I hope they put some pressure on other big manufacturers who have been giving Linux users the cold shoulder (I'm looking at you, Creative).
- outlaw686, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Glad with a company like dell Ubuntu, and linux users finally have a forceful voice the industry will listen to and take seriously. This is a huge step forward guys.
- expertninja, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I think ATI should stick around because competition is good.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I don't use ATI, but i agree...Crap like this shouldn't happen and ATI should not be ignoring the linux community since the whole Dell goiung Ubuntu thing.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12But Nvidia doesn't rename the same ***** GPU for each new bus that comes out. Lets see here; We have the radeon, radeon 7000, 7200, 9000, 9200, 9250, x200, x300, x1300. They're all the same chip that wasn't as good as a geforce 2.
- Racerx52, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Nvidia is better anyways, I agree.
- linkinpark342, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9ow, my brain
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Get a vacuum cleaner
- Midnitte, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8blah ATI could just open source their drivers. Better support would come sooner.
- vuke69, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Tell that to bacteria and rodent populations.
- jejones, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Glad to hear it! Now, next step for Dell: announce that it will refuse to use any hardware without reasonable Linux support in ANY of its computers, not just the few they sell with Ubuntu.
- ronin510, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7because the Avivo and r300 developers *are* the middle men. ATI provides the cards and who better to make drivers than the people who actually design/build the cards?
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I wish for a blowjob.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I used to like ATI and their Windows drivers back in like 2003, 2004...i guess they've gone downhill since then...
- ErBiC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6ATI's screwed us over for WAY too long on these... The current fglrx driver SUCKS.
Can't wait to see what other hardware gets better drivers from this deal. - lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Since Dell is in the top 5 hardware vendors, I think it would make a big difference. Imagine if Dell Suddenly stopped offering ATi or AMD chips. Suddenly their market is severely cut.
- Jacob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah you would sell more hardware with better drivers, you would get better drivers cheaper if you made them opensource. They don't need to make their drivers open source though that doesn't matter to many linux users like me, but they do need to get a driver out there that isn't complete *****, as it is I've boycotted ATI til they can get a driver comparable to the nvidia drivers.
- motang, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Freaking sweet, it finally happened. Good for the Linux community, as we are going to finally get drivers for our ATi cards.
- buggu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7What's the most compelling way to get ATI to release better Linux drivers?
Buy nVidia. It's that simple. Corporations only pay attention to the those who make their opinions heard with their wallet. - rapiddemon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6lol no they arent, the 7000=radeon VE, the 7200=original radeon, the 9000
- etruscan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5What if he meant a notebook?
- felyduw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+41) Open Source version of something with its *full* specs disclosed is generally better than a closed-source version.
2) A company based on profit such as Red Hat or MySql ?
3) Does AMD make any money out of their drivers? Didn't know that.
4) You're rude and dumb. - coredump0x01, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6You need to use the latest Nvidia driver (100.xx). They're the only drivers that support the G80.
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'm just going to sit back and wait for you to get dugg down for your stupidity...As other people say, don't feed the trolls.
- Gerz1219, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You know, competition is a good thing because it drives innovation and efficiency. If you buy an inferior product just to stick it to the market leader, you're subsidizing failure, and eliminating any incentive for Intel/Nvidia's competitors to seriously challenge them. Luckilly, consumers don't shop irrationally in large numbers, especially for expensive items like video cards and CPUs. On the other hand, we have the American auto industry.
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Hurray for Dell soap!
- maz2331, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This is a big "pressure point" on ATI. Dell is an 800-pound gorilla, and chip manufacturers will take seriously any customer who places POs for chips by the millions. Actually, Dell orders in quantities that they can have chips custom built.
- ahuxley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Try supporting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Graphics_Project
They have some hardware to show, and real open support. - InvisibleMan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Cause that has worked so well in the past.
- championchap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So you like it when the girl makes a fart noise on it?
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Touche
