- sockpuppets, on 03/02/2009, -1/+35I made that mistake. When I opened the box it headbutted me and then climbed the bookcase, I haven't been able to coax it down yet.
- LiquidSpark, on 03/02/2009, -3/+32No actually. Apple's EULA is not law.
- sockpuppets, on 03/02/2009, -1/+26Oh no, Apple's Elite Tactical iUnit is at my door- and they're sipping lattes!
- sockpuppets, on 03/02/2009, -0/+25How To: Hackintosh a Dell Mini 9 Into the Ultimate OS X Netbook
http://i.gizmodo.com/5156903/how-to-hackintosh-a-d ... - wallclimber, on 03/02/2009, -5/+27As always, I greet any Dell/Ubuntu news with a large grain of doubt. Actually finding their non-Windows options on the Dell site isn't always easy, and when found, a non-Windows system is accompanied by dire-sounding warnings about the "dangers" of not choosing Microsoft's products, along with a banner declaring that Dell Recommends Microsoft Vista! (or whatever's the flavor of the time).
However, on the Mini 9, as I worked my way through the customization and purchase process, I found very little Microsoft promotional materials (though Windows was offered as a choice, which is fair), I didn't see any dire warnings for not choosing Windows, or "Dell recommends Windows Vista" slogans (or maybe AdBlock Plus just blocked them?)...I haven't finished the purchase yet, so possibly those dire warnings about not using Windows and the Vista promos will be found at the final checkout/purchase page...I hope not, because it will kill my purchase. Now I have to go move some money from savings so I can actually buy my new little Mini 9. :) How fun! - jakswa, on 03/02/2009, -2/+18I'm proud to say I bought a Dell Mini 9. I'm not proud to say I'm giving it to my girlfriend for the sole reason of converting her to linux, so my tech-support life will be easier.
- kuyamon, on 03/02/2009, -1/+16Just bought one of these for $200. Spend a few extra bucks and you can max the RAM and increase the hard drive space on this and still spend under $300. IMO, great price for something that can run XP, Linux, and OSX.
- Phate8263, on 03/02/2009, -0/+14Hard to find? It was but apparently you haven't been there lately.
1. Click on for the home
2. Click on laptops or desktops
3. Click the very visible checkmark on the left next to Ubuntu Linux, and it automatically pulls up all the Ubuntu offerings. - pitdog, on 03/02/2009, -0/+13I have Dell 9 Mini SSD with Ubuntu, nice machine, works just fine.
- sockpuppets, on 03/02/2009, -0/+12These were $185 a couple days ago, I went ahead and ordered one.
- AboveandBeyond, on 03/02/2009, -6/+18Angel Bunny...typical mac user.
- inactive, on 03/02/2009, -0/+11dont buy the RAM from dell.
- ethana2, on 03/02/2009, -1/+11On a netbook? I agree. I can't think of any good reason to run Windows on a netbook. The whole point of using Windows these days is to run DirectX9.0c+ games, CS3, and AutoCad in the first place.
You're not going to be doing that stuff on a mini 9. - redrabbit, on 03/02/2009, -1/+10The ASUS 1000HE has a 10" screen, cool macbook-like keys, and a 9.5 hour battery life.
- kpmoore, on 03/02/2009, -0/+9I actually just bought the Dell Mini during the President's Day sale. I couldn't be happier with it.
I was disappointed at first to find that Firefox had been re-dubbed "Yahoo! Web Browser" and that certain features of Ubuntu had been disabled. But I quickly reformatted it and installed Intrepid with the Ubuntu Netbook Remix and now she's running like a dream. I highly recommend any Dell Mini 9 owners to check out www.ubuntumini.com/ It's a very helpful source. - ethana2, on 03/02/2009, -0/+8That's not something to be ashamed of. I do not support Windows at all, but I'm lucky enough to have a gf who uses a mac (got my grandma using my mac also, but my mom and myself have Ubuntu Dells, and my sister uses a Dell running Ubuntu.)
- MacEnvy, on 03/02/2009, -1/+9It's not that specialized, it's just vanilla Ubuntu with the appropriate portable features installed.
- ethana2, on 03/02/2009, -0/+8I own a mac, running OS 10.4.11, and an Ubuntu Dell running 8.10.
Unless 10.5 is really that much better than 10.4, no, it would not be 'even better with OS X on it'. - Pooley, on 03/02/2009, -0/+7Ordered one a few days ago with the intention of installing Mac OS X on it - http://i.gizmodo.com/5156903/how-to-hackintosh-a-d ...
I maxed up everything - 32GB SSHD, upped the cam to a 1.3 megapixel and even went for a cool sticker. Whole thing came in at under £350 and it will be the ideal tool for me when I'm out and about.
I looked at the Mini 10 but it has the same res just a bigger screen. Popped into PC World to try out the keyboard on the 9 and was fine with it.
Order placed! - thinkb4utype, on 03/02/2009, -2/+8Great to hear about all these mini Linux PC's. I hope they kill Windows, OSX, and all other proprietary OS's. These computers are too useful to let these companies muck them around for profit. It's like the only hammers you could get were made by Ace. You know Ace would also own the nails too and you would have to buy a different hammer for each kind of nail. Finally, the models would change each year and the old nails wouldn't work anymore. It's all too stupid.
- carlosos, on 03/02/2009, -0/+6I would buy RAM from Newegg.com or Zipzoomfly.com or tigerdirect.com or whoever is cheapest.
- tupperbacharach, on 03/02/2009, -0/+6For those of you installing other OSs/distros in your Mini, try to keep the Dell Diagnostics partition intact -- it will allow you to easily boot into DOS to update the BIOS. Without it, updating the BIOS will probably require making a bootable, DOS, USB drive and going through a big rigmarole.
If you have to overwrite the Diagnostics partition, at least update the BIOS first.
Here's a post from an Ubuntu forum outlining the procedure for updating the BIOS, using DOS from the diagnostic partition: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?s=a34dfe2c8ba ... - rx8geek, on 03/02/2009, -0/+6I'm still waiting for a decent version of the mini 10 to come out. One of its selling points with that one is the HDMI port, why they keep jamming that VGA port on all these things I'll never know.
But word of a 2gb ram and higher resolution screen in the hopefully not too distant future has me waiting. I want to use it as is a nicely sized portable media playback device and so far the mini 10 looks to check most of the boxes. - eigenweasel, on 03/02/2009, -1/+6Comma comma comma comma comma chameleon.
- inactive, on 03/02/2009, -1/+6That's changing, slowly but surely. 1 in 3 Dell netbooks ship with Ubuntu even with this token effort.
Once MS delivers 7 and it's apparent that it's just vista warmed over, vendors will continue flowing down the linux line. It's simple economics. - kcap122, on 03/02/2009, -0/+5is anyone aware of a comparison article between the Aspire One and the Mini 9?
- carlosos, on 03/02/2009, -0/+4Yes, and google is also your friend in those cases
http://portablemonkey.com/article/asus-eee-pc-901- ... - MacEnvy, on 03/02/2009, -0/+4What are you talking about? It's on their site, right on the main laptop page:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx ... - fluxion, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4of all the things to put out exclusively with a glossy-screen they do it to a freakin netbook.
"oh wow, my youtube videos are so crisp and vibrant! too bad i have to use my super-portable internet device in a dimly lit room or else i have a constantly morphing image superimposed on my screen."
im sorry. i just cant stand this glossy-only fad. at this rate, a few years from now, all our laptop screens will suck ass in any well-lit area and we'll be forced to forsake the light and become albinos.
but other than that, kudos dell. i mean it, its a great netbook, and your linux adoption is a wonderful testament to your customer focus.
fire the glossy screen guy though, im sure apple has an opening for him. - renegadeafk, on 03/02/2009, -1/+5They need to do that so retards don't by a linux notebook with realizing it (laugh btu there are people who will manage to find there way to dells linux computers and get one expecting windows) and go WTF this isn't windows!!11
- kokodhem, on 03/02/2009, -0/+4My mini9 is great... Dell's support for it, not so much. They had apparently retired their lpia distro of 8.04 before the thing even shipped to me. lpia really messes everything up in general as well, so plan on reformatting everything, and force the architecture to something else...
- sockpuppets, on 03/02/2009, -2/+6Girlfriend in a comma
I know I know
It's serious - opusaz, on 03/02/2009, -0/+4We've had good luck with the Eee PC 1000. Got six or seven of the little buggers. We like the 10" screen much better than 9". The only issue we have is the modified Xandros OS. It's a bit too modified for our tastes, to the point we're going to experiment with easy peasy and eeeubuntu. I'm curious if Dell modified Ubuntu in any way on this mini.
Anywho, FWIW. - Trax91, on 03/02/2009, -0/+4Hacbook, iHac?
- DrRetro, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3I bought an XP unit and I absolutely love it. For what it is, it's one of the best machines I ever bought. Made a live USB stick of Ubuntu and it works brilliantly on it. It worked much better than I expected it to.
- eon42, on 03/02/2009, -0/+3im also thinking of getting one for that same reason...hell of a lot less than a $1000 macbook
- usefulidiot127, on 03/02/2009, -0/+3Jaunty Jackalope?
- daftman, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4Does your gf-now-wife have any anti-virus, firewall, span filter while running vista?
- Heilige, on 03/02/2009, -0/+3To put anything else besides Linux on this is just plain ignorant, why limit yourself, you should get the most out of your money.
- wvstephens, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3I just bought an Acer Aspire One with 160 gb drive and 1gb memory I get about 4 hours of continuous use. I did ditch windows xp though, and installed linux4one worked out of the box.
Only cost $299 at Staples. - Onetrack, on 03/02/2009, -0/+3I just installed OSX on one of these for a friend, and it runs surprisingly well.
Personally dislike they keyboard, the one on the MSI Wind was better.. installing OSX 10.5.6 was a doddle, everything supported.
http://mydellmini.com/forum/howto-install-os-x-the ... - etx313, on 03/02/2009, -0/+3I just picked up the HP Mini 1000 with linux on it with the 10 inch screen, 60 gig hd, etc. Absolutely love it. Leopard runs great on it too.
- redrabbit, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4how is that an issue? if you know enough about xandros to not like it, then you know enough to install ubuntu or any other distro yourself
- asaone, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3I have had my mini 9 for a few months now and I love it. 16gb ssd, 16 sd card 2gb ram. I have 2 desktop atoms a 230 and a 330 I hope to collect them. Planing on 540 for the next one.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2The Samsung NC10 costs twice as much as the Dell Mini 9.
- ism70605, on 03/02/2009, -4/+6So, Linux is vendor lock-in? You realize there is a way to reply to people, right?
If we lived in RMS's dream world we would have less freedoms. Devs would be essentially outlawed from closing their source. Should they not have the right to do so? - Pfkninenines, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2Ugh, I always miss out on the good deals. I kept pricing them out and I couldn't get more than a $25 difference from the Windows XP based Mini 9 with the same options. I'd have probably paid the $185 though, saving at this point nearly $65.
- denisbloodnok, on 03/03/2009, -1/+3The Mini 9 is my primary machine out of 7 computers in my house.
Of course I have it hooked to an external monitor and keyboard and boot it from a USB connected hard drive running Kubuntu most of the time, but it is a solid, reliable box. I love it. - SawanM, on 03/02/2009, -6/+8You sure about that? Don't you think a specialized Linux distro would run better on a network?
- dogfood, on 03/02/2009, -0/+2The write speeds on cheap SSDs are very slow. Unless you are running a linux distro that was designed for netbooks (tweaked to minimize writing to the drive), I would recommend something with a spinny drive. I'm running a Lenovo S10 with a 160gb drive partitioned three ways with OSX, XP, and Ubuntu 8.10. All three run very smooth.
Before this I had an aspire one with an 8GB SSD running linpus linux and Windows XP. Linpus ran great, but XP was very slow even after heavy tweaking to minimize caching. -
