- ThrobbingBrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18If the "fix" was as easy as you make it seem, it would have been done a long time ago. It's not up to Ubuntu or Dell to "fix the wireless driver issues". Take up your issues with < insert manufacturer name here >
- tulsapoke, on 10/15/2007, -0/+17I just installed the Gutsy 7.10 version (beta) and everything on my Dell E1505 worked out of the box for the first time ever. Wireless, suspend, correct resolution, 3d effects, everything I have tested. Everything I could test even worked on the live disk with NO tweaking. I can't wait for this thing to launch. BTW the new Compiz-Fusion is kickass.
- stupidbrowner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Are you sure you don't want Google boxer shorts? Underwear with "I'm feeling lucky" written on it is pretty darn cool!
- g0blin, on 10/15/2007, -2/+12Anybody have any screenshots? I can't be bothered to download them to try them out.
- NJank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10no, taking issues up with Dell is correct. Dell has industry weight. the linux community doesn't (consumer market, at least). Linux broadcom drivers suck because wifi manufacturers had no incentive to put any time or effort into the idea. now, we have dell, someone with industry clout. someone who could say: hey, intel... your 2915 card uses broadcom chips. we're done using them if we can't get good drivers for linux. we want one set of hardware for all OS's if we can. work with us. we're talking to your competitors while you decide...
- meepus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I don't understand why your or Google would want to release a Google product to the public that would be mostly useless to the public. I understand that a lot of people like using Google's services, but Google is not a lifestyle brand beyond search. Their services are all built on data organization and search, not operating systems. I don't want crappy Google boxer shorts: I want better Google search, and that's what we're all getting, and I'm glad that Google isn't doing otherwise except as as jokery.
- TheBrat, on 10/15/2007, -0/+8That was my experience installing Ubuntu on a Toshiba laptop as well, absolutely seamless. I was wireless within 5 minutes. Now, let me tell you about my experience with a brand new Vista laptop. I spent at least 15 hours troubleshooting to get a wireless connection. I was giving it one last attempt and it finally worked. My next troubleshooting step was going to be a reformat and an Ubuntu install.
- DocHoliday22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Mate you have to have been on another planet not to see all the articles posted on the fact that Goobuntu will never go public unless it's leaked.
- moocow1452, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Paradox!
- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Yeah, and it's up to Microsoft to release drivers for Creative soundcards too, right? :p
As above - manufacturers are at fault. - hondaman, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13Ubuntu 7.04 needs a respin anyway. It wouldnt even come close to installing on my new laptop. Hopefully 7.10 is better.
- ut2k4king, on 10/10/2007, -2/+97.10 is gonna be better.
- Jeffler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Doesn't this prove they actually care? What do you want them to do? Release Dellbuntu? You'd just complain about monopoly if that were the case.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Thats funny - it's worked on both my laptops without any real hassle. I had to install the wireless drivers, but WOW, i installed ONE driver. big deal.
- slezzzter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Why's that? Do you have trouble finding what you're looking for down there?
- mrkslntbob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5My Intel Wireless card works just fine.
Some wireless cards have a harder time because there manufacturers don't care about linux, or their own customers that want to use it, enough to release drivers.
Also I've found the tutorials, and everyone answering questions over at ubuntuforums.org to be very helpful. - Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6So fire off an e-mail to your wireless card manufacturer and ask for a driver. :p
- jrattner1, on 10/10/2007, -8/+137.04 is amazing
- decker12, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Nice to see that they at least listened and made some effort towards it.
- ShogunWarPig, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6and 8.10 will be better and then........
- Pic0, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4They should just fix the wireless driver issues
- ThrobbingBrain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I didn't say he couldn't complain to them. I'd say they have a lot to do with AMD/ATI opening up the specs for their cards. At the same time though, Dell has absolutely NO personal responsibility to make any drivers better.
- motang, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't think Google would do something like that, considering the fact that I am sure they have highly modified the Linux Kernel.
- willemmulder, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I run Ubuntu for a week now on my laptop. Win XP crashed and I couldn't be bothered to search for my XP cd and try to fix it or something.
Ubuntu worked good from the very first start! It looks and works awesome... That is: it's very practical, fast, and Beryl blows any Mac (or Vista PC or whatever) out of the water if it's about eyecandy ;-)
There's only one thing to rembember: if you don't like the konsole/terminal, don't use it... You don't need it anyway, but you can mess things up badly if you don't know what you're doing :-)
So give it a shot and enjoy! - zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3No, a paradox is killing your grandfather before you he had one of your parents.
This is just him using a wired network. - zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -2/+38.04 much?
- manogamez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1From the wiki:
"Dell has not tested, and does not support, ATI video on workstations, desktops, or notebooks running Linux at this time."
BUST - CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Dell supplies the computer, so it _is_ Dell's problem to ensure that the computer works.
- double051, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does this include support for 8400M GPUs?
- syncr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Any idea how this might work on other Dell Lappy's? Specifically the Latitude D620 in my case. I had problems with modifying my xorg.conf and never got any decent video resolutions working with Ubuntu 6.10
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No. The rule is that if they _release_ their modifications, they have to release the source as well as the binary (the actual compiled program). If a company, or an individual, modifies a GPL program and does not release the modificatiions at all, that's just fine. You may be thinking of some of the earlier open source (!= free software btw) licenses, which required any improvements to be submitted to the original author.
- manogamez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Do you have an ATI card? I have the same laptop with an ATI x1300. ATI=Headache
- m6arate, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1good call on calling it a lappy. I do the same. as you were.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, I know, but they sell a Linux stack to HTC now. Never say never.
- cawpin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sometimes it's just the hardware and not the distro. My DVR at home is running Windows XP with Snapstream BeyondTV. I cannot install ANY Linux distro. The combination of hardware in it just doesn't let the install complete. I've tried Ubuntu 6.10/7.04, Fedora 5/6, PCOS and a few others. They all get about 90% done with the install and they either lock up or just reboot without warning. I think it is the Soyo motherboard in the machine that is the problem but I don't have another machine to use for the DVR so I have to stick with Windows.
- TurnedintoaNewt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1As far as wireless goes, I know some of the problem is that we don't have drivers.
But the wirelesss on my laptop with a linksys pcmcia card and my desktop with a linksys pci card worked just fine with breezy edgy, but when i installed feisty, it didn't, something with the change in wireless managers in between...all i know is i'm waiting for gutsy to do fresh installs... - snugglebear, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I used those cd's to install on my new 1420 inspiron.
For some reason root owns the Desktop folder on the initial install for my user, no matter which user it is, giving me no permissions to put icons on my own desktop.
2 second fix to chown it but still, its weird that dell's images for a default install don't give you permissions on your own desktop. - RoshanK, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3i just tried installing 7.10 (gutsy) onto my g2s because i couldn't get even the live cd of feisty to run. i searched online and did some of those 'tweaks' but still no good. while installing gutsy the install continued to fail and i ended up with a laptop that wouldn't boot. well in the end i had to use gparted and change the boot drive, but still, this wont help many beginners get into linux if its so hard to install in certain cases.
- andyakadum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Whats the stability like in gutsy? I'd like to give it a try too.
- andyakadum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0If you don't like it, find what's wrong and fix it YOURSELF! Acting like that wont make the ubuntu devs come to your aid any quicker (probably mock you behind your back instead, LOL).
Jesus. Its free!
The drivers are nvidias fault anyway. - Magadass, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Love how I get dugg down because Ubuntu doesn't install out of the box for me, *****!
- .Steven, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Now, with all the crap dell bundles with Windows!
- Magadass, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Ubuntu sucks at installing with the latest hardware, bought a Nvidia 8800 GTX Ultra, yeah it doesn't install now all it does is my monitor flashes with a no signal. Tried Live CD and alternate cd and Wubi with no luck...So whatever! F you Ubuntu!
- specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I want Google boxer shorts!
- nebbyfoshebby, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4my friend got it to work on his laptop, but after about a week he had messed it up so bad he had to reformat. im not sure if it was ubuntu or him. I download ubuntu and tried to get it working on my sisters PC but after updating completely it wouldnt boot up. I feel like a n00b and im just going to put a windows xp back on it for her.
- EXTER, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Wouldn't modifying it and not releasing it be a violation of the GPL
- kurupttek, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1I dont know about 7.04 maybe 6
- LiceHelpDotCom, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2I installed Ubuntu on one of my laptops. I am a novice. I hear all this praise about Ubuntu. Fine, I'd like to try it. So I wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install. Easy to install. Looks great but....
The wireless doesn't work! Go to the forums and check how to fix and I have to jump through hoops on unintelligible commands that are completely foreign to me. I don't mind working a little bit but, if it is a pain for me to figure out, you are NEVER going to get my wife, or my dad or anyone to switch. Sorry.
I DON'T GIVE A DAMN WHO'S FAULT IT IS (ubuntu, linksys, IBM)...JUST MAKE IT WORK.
If you want to convince people like me (people who are WILLING to give it a try), it better be operable and easy. Windows is. No excuses. - TheBrat, on 10/10/2007, -7/+0That was my experience installing Ubuntu on a Toshiba laptop as well, absolutely seamless. I was wireless within 5 minutes.
