- hmemcpy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1608 colors? Wow, those linux gfx drivers are really advanced :)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+75Dell is serious about Linux is what makes me happy, they could have just launched a not so nice laptop.
Micheal Dell is doing awesome job. - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -6/+60If any *new* model that is from now on introduced by Dell also supports (and tested with) Linux, then that's very encouraging. The mainstream press presents this very enthusiatically as a new line of laptops, without even mentioning Linux. It's almost as though Linux options are implied.
- Ashkc88, on 10/11/2007, -4/+57I like how at the top it says "Dell recommends Windows Vista™ Home Premium."
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28Great news. Congrats Dell & Linux.
I repeat myself...
"That's one small step for Dell, one giant leap for Linux." - Ub3rg33k, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26Why the hell can't you get it with a nVidia mobile graphics chip?
- rstarr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26Cubert: Hey Leela, help me apply these flame decals I got in my cereal. They'll make the ship go faster.
Leela: And what's your scientific basis for thinking that?
Cubert: I'm 12. - felyduw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23What about Europe? :(
- Theli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22I must say... having a brown laptop running Ubuntu would look kind of cool. A nerdy kind of cool, but cool nonetheless.
- CopyNinja, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23I'm not even buying one of these and im excited, Dell is really doing some cool stuff and I hope they make considerable profit off of it so they continue.
- RainDrizzleFog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Before it was a symbol for nazis and white power, the swastika was a symbol of eternal life. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika
- Ansible, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20I hear those new apple II computers have 16 colors, good luck dell..
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20The "Swastika" is a centuries old, holy & auspicious symbol in many of the varied Indian religions. However, the ***** Hitler twisted it & used it & thereafter its a bit controversial in the western world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika - gabrielsond, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19too bad they still don't offer ubuntu in Canada... weak
- heavyal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Nice to see that the question about the swastika was posed without insult. So often around here people just go crazy about such things without even finding out the whole story. Kudos to you people with open minds.
- Navicerts, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18I priced a Ubuntu / Vista machine, identical hardware and it looks like Dell charges $50 for Windows Vista.
- tboutcher, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Ordering one this this weekend!
- nick1123, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Reminds me of Apple and their line of iFruits a few years back.
Go linux! - stonyhill, on 10/11/2007, -6/+23Unlike its Vista sibling, the 1420n is not available with: Discrete nVidia graphics, Blu-Ray, Wireless-N, or the webcam. But yeah, you can get it in flamingo pink.
- stradv16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17It's a shame that the symbol was given such a bad name.
- eatsushi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15As an Apple fan, I have to say, Good job Dell.
- bageloid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16drivers, drivers, drivers. Thats why it doesnt have those, dell aint writing em, so you cant have the HW.
- Gomek, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21Do everyone, including yourself, a favor and unsubscribe from the Linux/Unix section.
- arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16@anmol2k4
I'm sorry that this is off topic, but could you explain your avatar? - MacBear, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17I had never used Linux until installing Ubuntu on an old dell desktop... I have to say I would definitely recommend a prefab computer running Linux to friends or family in a heart beat. Simple and easy to use, none of the b.s. Micro$oft makes you go through! At least dell is making a step in the right direction!
- Ashkc88, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11So THATS why it's faster with more RAM! Those older notebooks just can't keep up with 8 colors.
- lodgelinks, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17Can't be that bad... Dell is selling it, my mom uses it, and my wife... both of which aren't part of this geek community of which you speak.
- superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11damn, the system i want is $2,781
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10To everybody,
I am a Hindu, and this our religious symbol. My apologies to anyone to whom this may have caused any harm.
This is a religious symbol in Hinduism Buddhism and Jainism. And happens to be one of the oldest human symbol.
The one Hitler (facing left) used is inauspicious // evil in our religion.
Again sorry if this caused anybody any harm, But this is our religion.
I will remove it if Swastika garners any negative attention ever again in digg. - HPCELarry, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11sweet. When I finally get enough money to buy a work laptop, i'm getting linux. Windows for games, linux for all else.
- coredump0x01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+118 colors... I didn't think these laptops would be shipping with ATI's drivers.
- ripstuntz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Is it just me or does every Dell laptop look like its built to withstand a bomb going off? Great laptops in my opinion, love what they are doing.
- theratster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8That was a temporary glitch... as soon as it was reported Dell announced that they were working to put it back up, and that they will contact all purchasers in the meanwhile to hook em up with a warranty if they wanted.
- bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10This is really exciting news. I just installed Ubuntu with Compiz Fusion for a customer as a dual-boot option along side Vista... which he hates. Compiz Fusion absolutely blew him away. He was a bit bummed out that he couldn't use Office 2007 in Ubuntu (I'm not going to tackle that one), but I think he'll settle for OpenOffice in exchange for the other enhancements, the protection from malware, and the emancipation from the Microsoft overlord.
If this works out, all the new computers for his office may just be Ubuntu machines. - lispy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Is it just me or does the flashpreview NOT work from within Firefox on Ubuntu Edgy?
I'd love to see the colors in a preview. Anybody got a working mirror or can post a plain jpg of the coloroptions? - xnyhps, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8And then hookup your brown Zu... ah, never mind.
- Oldschoolhack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I am needing a new laptop. If they would just upgrade the graphics card I'd buy one. Gotta support a company that jumps on the Linux bandwagon... kudos Dell.
- priegog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Some would argue (myself included) Ubuntu is way easier than Windows to use... I don't see any problem with that... it's not like they're hiding they won't be getting Windows with the cheaper one.
- arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Your expectation has been met.
- upsilonh24, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I think they're forced to display this sentence if they want to continue selling Windows PCs.
- Rice, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6How about a real video card for the notebooks?
A good step though. - paulmike3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5No. No, you cannot.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+6damn comment system...wrong reply
- gazmercer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Fasterm More RAM and 8 colours, thought I was reading an advert for a ZX Spectrum
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+6When I build a comparable Dell system, it's $150 less.
- digduality2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5i hate the new comment system. i could've sworn i replied to tippy
- Chandon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'm not sure that I'd call any of those "cool features". We have an optical drive that costs more than the laptop itself, a wireless standard that isn't done yet, and a device that lots of people want but no-one has ever actually used.
- borchard76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I don't know, but I hope they change that soon.
- atbnet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Anywhere you go, you will get ripped off on memory upgrades unless you do them yourself. Last time I checked 2 GB sticks were around $150 on Newegg, so about $300ish for 4 GB. So if you want more, I'd buy the default memory amount and order the amount you really want someplace else.
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Already have an Inspiron 1501 that i installed Ubuntu on just fine. The only thing that sucks is the ATI card, and everyone knows ATI drivers blow. I'd buy a brand new one if they'd offer it with nVidia cards.
