- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -9/+59That list was pretty sad.
- TheWestExit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+51People often forget that the entire UT series is availible on Linux, including the upcomming Unreal Tournament 3.
- Fascist, on 10/10/2007, -1/+40Battle of Wesnoth, anyone?
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -3/+35A few more:

This is a very regularly updated version of Transport Tycoon with new features coming regularly. They fixed most of the annoying things from the Windows version, and have generally made it a much more fun game to play.

A good free multiplayer first person shooter

A really turn based game, it's hard to explain, I haven't ever played much like it. Works multiplayer too.

Another good first person shooter.

Quake 3 Arena ish (I know it's old, but it's fun for people like me with crappy hardware). Online play works, but not many people on it, you'll mostly play against bots.

This game is hella fun. It hasn't been updated in forever, but it's still a lot of fun to play. It's now also called planetpenguin racer.
That's all I got. - bradbeattie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31At least us Mac users have breakout, superbreakout... uhh... photoshop....
- MrSarcasm, on 10/10/2007, -12/+37Woooow.... NEVERBALL! Is it 1995 or what?
I'll rather play "The quest for the lost dependency package" or "Deadly Mega Nmap Killer-Ping"... - Skizzot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23I play Unreal exclusively on Linux, I seem to get better frame rate.
- bradbeattie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Fortunate for you, those two both come pre-installed.
- ZephyrNinety, on 10/10/2007, -7/+27If you're using Linux, you're probably not too concerned about games. I know I'm not. Steam works under Wine and UT runs natively. Other than that, by a damn console.
- malkir, on 10/10/2007, -14/+33Title should have been "Proving Linux gaming sucks with 17 mediocre games"
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17I donno, "quest for lost dependency package" seems to be exclusive to redhat.
- trghpy, on 10/10/2007, -19/+33... Neverball, Frets on Fire, Frozen Bubble?
those have to be the worst choices to start the list off with. - Megatog615, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Burried for leaving out Quake 3, Doom3, Quake 4, and the slew of other games that are extremely popular but are mysteriously missing from the list.
- Kr4t05, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12I'll vouch for Tremulous, Nexuiz, Warsow and True Combat: Elite, all very good shooters, and light on hardware requirements. I also just bought UT2004 today, after installing it (a tough feat, given Midway's ignorance to Linux...) I found that it runs quite beautifully on my modest hardware.
What I can't wait for are games like UT3 and Quake Wars. I hope to see more Linux ports in the future. Maybe I'll finally be able to delete that nasty Windows partition... :/ - Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Seriously guys, Tremulous is the best/most addictive game regardless of platform. It just so happens to run on windows as well as linux. Try it out. It's the best!!!
PS (eVo) are the best ;) - JackyJ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Wow! Great Comment! A+++++++ Would do business with again!
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8The Unreal engines generally perform better in openGL mode while running on linux. Some cards are excellent opengl performers others aren't. In any case, theres no reason not to run it on Linux.
- DPyro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yes, but does the average gamer have to play every single new game out in existence to be satisfied? The point that should have been made are that there are enough quality games on Linux (Quake 4, UT2k4, Stacraft (WINE), Tremulous, Simcity 4000 (WINE), and TA:Spring) to be able to delete your Windows partition and not cry for any loss of quality gaming.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7There's a very good Suse port...unfortunately.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7ID was much more open source friendly years ago. They used to release engines as open source immediately after they weren't worth anything on the market. That changed with quake 3, for some reason.
- DPyro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6id Software offers the Linux binaries of its games as a free download from its FTP. The Linux versions of the games shouldn't cost anymore than the Windows versions.
- Jakerius, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Yes, I can.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I bought UT2k4 for $40 a few years ago... it came with both Windows and Linux install files...
- kokuei, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That's like saying if you want to program do it on windows because that's where the users are. Just because you don't like to game on your computer doesn't mean the rest of us don't enjoy it. Besides my computer has better hardware than the XBOX 360. Why do I want to downgrade?
- JackyJ, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Damn my game irrlamb was mentioned. And I was just sitting here drinking and minding my own business.
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5GNOME comes with a Minesweeper clone. With the solitaire games that come with it, there's no reason for the average office worker to use anything else.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Officially rebunked.
- dullin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Bzzt wrong on AA
Their Linux client hasn't been updated in ages and they just stopped supporting it. - Blazeix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah, I thought UT2004, along with Quake 3 and America's Army, would be on the list for sure!.
- Ricapar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I love my Linux install. I wouldn't give up Gentoo for anything. But come on, enough with the "Linux game lists". They're all basically the same reposts of the same games. And if I see a new game on a list, it's probably an extremely old one.
- ajd344, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Thank god Tux Racer wasnt on there
- AstralSin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4you missed Alien Arena 2007, http://red.planetarena.org
- Disfnord, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Quake III's source code was released under the GPL in 2005, give 'em a few years and I'd wager they'll do the same with the Doom 3 engine
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Doom 3 works natively. No need for Wine.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4> "If you are someone who can write games why don't you?! For Linux yet!"
Because, honestly... "thank you" doesn't pay the electric bill, which means people have to get real jobs, which limits the time they can dedicate to any free hobby, which means that 1) they put out half-crap in a timely manner, or 2) they take their time and put out something that would've been considered good 3 years ago. - antdude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I want real games like World in Conflict, Crysis, Command & Conquer 3, etc. And pure Linux ports.
- misterjangles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Man, you could sure say that again!
- EvilMoose, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7I play WoW in Linux, I get higher framerates in that and Guardian doesn't scan my files, IMs and emails in it. That's about it... Most games wont work past a Silver rating but who cares, I'm not here to play games, I'm here to multitask.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Me too! Back in 2003, UT (the original) wouldn't play except in Safe Mode in Windows but it worked perfectly in Red Hat 9.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3these games are good, although not really awesome compared to windows standards, but possibly addictive.
convincing people to switch to linux isn't going to happen on a gaming basis, the same way you can't convince someone to use mac for its games. But hey, linux is great, nice list. - fuzzynyanko, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8I don't mind Linux gaming and all, but Second Life is awesome?
- schloemoe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Some more cool games:
XMoto http://xmoto.tuxfamily.org/
Wormux http://www.wormux.org - Erowid, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5ID is part of the open source community (I assume that's the community you were referring to)??
- zombiedepot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You can find a lot more games for Linux at http://games.linux.sk/
- lengau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Or Quake 4 if you wanted a slightly more updated version.
The point is that most of the major games available for Windows are on Linux, too. They just don't advertise it. - init100, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4"Linux's install base just can't compare to that of Windows."
Tell us something that we don't know already. - GyroTech, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I know this is purely anecdotal, but I have found since switch to XP a lot of my older Windows games don't run so well under Windows, but Linux has a fair old go at getting them right (Fallout 1 & 2, & Planescape: Torment come directly to mind).
The problems will start coming up soon. With MS's push of DX10 on Vista and only Vista, but all the graphical stuff of D3D10 being available in OpenGL 2.1 now (and 3.0 on it's way soon enough), even if a game developer sticks to Windows, they willshould be writing engines that work in both 2kxp and Vista. In DX world, that means two engines, in OpenGL that means one. Smart developers may start to realise this and use OpenGL more. They do that and half the fight is already won, it's substantially more easy to port an OpenGL engine to Linux than a D3D one... - dranire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ut2004 is good, Postal 2 was good...Doom 3 was good...lots of FPS's on Linux...oh wait, Neverwinter Nights was good, this list actually does kinda suck. Most are OSS which is cool, but there are lots of other awesome games out there.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Agreed, it doesn't exactly debunk anything, if anything it actually bunks.
Quake Wars looks nice and i do like UT but even if all the games on the list where as good it still fails in comparison. - GnuTzu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2A few of these are available on a LiveDVD:
