- AlexGrundner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excellent article. I've been hearing about the rumblings between the two groups and it's nice to see the arguments clearly laid out. Now that I've become somewhat skilled at configuring and tweaking Ubuntu to my needs, I've been considering jumping back to the pure source, Debian (I originally started with Sarge when it first came out and eventually dropped it because the learning curve was quite high for a life long Windows user who knew nothing else). However, I'm still a little bummed that the install process and default desktop is not as polished as Ubuntu -- tried out the Debian Etch daily NetInstall build. Which gets me wondering... why haven't all the derivative Debian desktop distros given back some of their improvements to http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-desktop/ on making Etch just as easy for a newbie to install and get running?
What would be nice:
* Live CD with a GUI Installer for desktop use (a la Ubuntu)
* A refined default desktop environment that's *included* on the Live CD – either just GNOME or have the option to pick KDE as well.
* Include NDISWRAPPER in the NetInstall CD for wireless card support (GUI would be nice -- see: http://spohlenz.blogspot.com/2005/07/everyone-likes-screenshots.html)
* A more polished default desktop look and feel – the DebBlue package (http://debblue.debian.net/debblue.php) wasn't bad in Sarge (Etch as it is right now is just UGLY) - bhooot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Debian in Crisis?" seems to be a bit over the top for the topic. Debian has a good following of its own. Ubuntu is more geared towards the desktop users (and more recently they gave a push to the server too). I don't see Debian being used by a huge percentage of general users. It will probably remain to be likened by a small group of people who can appreciate its qualities, features, and the freedom to use it. Ubuntu is doing a major job of bringing Linux to the desktop but they should also make sure that they are recognizing the parent distro while not making it hard to patch the changes they themselves made to Debian by the DDs. They are improving Ubuntu, but the changes which improve Debian too will in the end give Ubuntu again a big boost.

The Linux Counter Machine Statistics page ( http://counter.li.org/reports/machines.php ) lists Debian as the most popular distro, although this is machines, not users, and of course only those that registered with the counter.
There are so many distros that are based on Debian that I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon, even if the majority of users end up using a derivative, and Debian exists as a base to those distros. - overshard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ubuntu and Debian are both decent *nix distros but I see Fedora overtaking them quite quickly. Fedora is on top of technology now days with a new release every 6 months and constant updates it is quickly becoming a very nice OS. If i were Debian I would worry more about Fedora then Ubuntu
