- kamisama, on 08/17/2008, -1/+40Debian has been routing my 2 internet connections (10 Mbit cable and 1 Mbit adsl backup) on a single AMD K6-200 mhz with 128mb ram on a FIC VA503+ since 1998. It's been a surprisingly trouble free 10 years. Current uptime is around 300 days.

Happy Birthday! - GOVATENT, on 08/17/2008, -7/+16I used to use Red Hat, then switched to Fedora when the open source Red Hat went cooperate and they started Fedora. I used the first view versions. Then my brother showed me ubuntu (Debian). I have not gone back or have plans to use a red hat system. I got so used to Debian commands. I know terminal is terminal but some commands are a bit different. Debian is much easier for me to work with.

Since then, seems like debian became less shaped for desktop usage, less updated
(I'm not talking about the experimental tree) ,and less stable.
I guess there's a sense here, because Ubuntu is based on Debian.
Debian's developers probably aims different goals these days, and that's, kinda sad, but logic.
I'm a hardcore Linux user, tried most of the major distros, and the only distro that reminds me the glory days of Debian (when speaking of stability for instance) is Ubuntu (after some modifications of course).
Other good alternative i know, is ArchLinux, the problam is, the core tree is updated too fast, so you can't count on the stability, after the next update.

I have an identical adoption path. However, I have this strange feeling that RH8 used my graphics better than Ubuntu current on my old PC. I could play UT at pretty high settings on my integrated Intel 82810E and it worked great which doesn't happen on the same machine with Ubuntu. - Archaic1, on 08/17/2008, -1/+6The celebrations were finally winding down after 2 months of celebrating Debian's 14th anniversary and in an attempt to be polite one of the guests decided to get out the vacuum cleaner and begin cleaning up. Unfortunately there was a severe lack of power outlets due to all the party lights and stereos plugged in so a wild guess had to be taken as to which cable was which in the snake's nest of cables. Despite it being a 1 in 20 chance the server cable was pulled.

I tried to use it and couldn't appreciate it and stuck with RH9 until I broke down and went to distrowatch.com to find a new server distro that I could get into. I tried Debian and after my first `apt-get` installation (mysql I think), I was hooked. I've used SuSE and CentOS since, but for my own personal servers, I love Debian.

- fuzzlog, on 08/17/2008, -2/+4I have had my personal server running 24/7 at home on Debian for a little over 2 years now. The only time I had to take it down was to install a USB 2.0 card because the hardware only had USB 1.1. This distro is rock solid.
