- positron, on 12/28/2007, -0/+22Hmm. You're right. Maybe that's why they are releasing security fixes... because they were found... and fixed.
- diggerpleez, on 12/28/2007, -0/+16considering it is in: All » Technology » Linux/Unix .... I wouldn't say that it seems very out of place.
- sdubois92, on 12/28/2007, -2/+16Debian FTW
- mcflynnthm, on 12/28/2007, -2/+13There are some neat symbols- on your very keyboard!- designed to indicate quotes. You don't need silly ASCII art. Just FYI.
- JasonCox, on 12/28/2007, -1/+11Listen, just because Ballmer is always throwing crap around doesn't mean there aren't folks at Microsoft who use Linux. Not everyone refuses to use other OS's like (some) Apple fanboys.
- schestowitz, on 12/28/2007, -12/+20Someone ought to inform our friends at Redmond. They love (and they use) Debian GNU/Linux. Just as a recent example:
Debian Powers the world

http://www.imbrandon.com/2007.12.05/debian-powers- ... - riah, on 12/28/2007, -0/+8I know more than a few Linux gurus who carry Mac laptops with them, with OS X being based on Unix and all.
- rudlavibizon, on 12/28/2007, -0/+8Yes, where do you think those fixes come from.
- Breepee, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6I think most Linux-users just don't talk about their XP-partition ;)
- technoredneck, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6 I wasn't aware this release was Debian GNU/Linux Live 2008 Ultimate Business Media Center Upgrade Edition 4.0 SP2. Thanks for the heads up.
- someguy435, on 12/28/2007, -0/+6RTFA indeed. "New CD and DVD images containing updated packages and the regular installation media accompanied with the package archive respectively will be available soon at the regular locations."
- maybeway36, on 12/28/2007, -0/+5Not up yet. Don't worry, just be patient...
- adamroach, on 12/28/2007, -3/+8Ignorance. Isn't it sad.
- MWeather, on 12/28/2007, -1/+6I'm a Linux fanboy and I use other OSes. Just this morning I used BSD.
- Waterrat, on 12/29/2007, -0/+5 I do .
- MWeather, on 12/28/2007, -0/+5When Linux holds off releasing a patch for a zero day exploit because it isn't path Tuesday yet, I'll bitch about Linux. Until then, I'll reserve my bitching for Microsoft.
- stmiller, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4digg.com runs on debian...
- schoate09, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4Buried for the unproven "( while at the same time
| saving them in a database )" - AceofSpades19, on 12/28/2007, -0/+4Wow, I can't believe how stupid some people are and I thought I met some stupid people
- zwaldowski, on 12/28/2007, -0/+431 years. It'll be fixed, dammit.
- someguy435, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Has anyone been able to find the new ISOs? I've been checking the mirrors since yesterday and have yet to find any with the new 40_r2 ISOs.
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/ - zwaldowski, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3That's not even out! You must be talking about Debian GNU/Linux Live 2008 Ultimate Business Media Center Upgrade Edition 4.0 SP2 with Security Updates and Pretty Buttons Edition.
- MWeather, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Debian updates are always newsworthy. They don't happen often.
- FenrisUlf, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3No, they've always been like that, that's just Political Correctness GNU-style.
- newwatch51, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2"development of linux is no different than the development of Windows (or OSX for that matter)"
You couldn't be more wrong. - zwaldowski, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Digg doesn't support any formatting; don't yell at him.
- MrSprout, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3I've been wanting to switch to "pure" Debian from Ubuntu for a while now, only for whatever reason the kernel bugs out on me consistently after each install of their 64-bit release and I'm too much of a novice to know why.
It's a shame, I'd heard good things. - danatks, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2Linux on the server, Mac OS on the desktop
- jdhore1, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3I'm a linux fanboy and i'm currently at work with 5 Windows boxes sitting next to me. At home, i have a MacBook Pro that dualboots OS X and WinXP...and also at home, i have a gaming box that runs ONLY WinXP.
- zwaldowski, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2What're you talking about? How about the Linux fanboys that make WINE?
- colinm, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1If you've got an earlier version, I've found using Jigdo instead of downloading the ISO to be much quicker (only the updated packages will be downloaded).
You can also use the same technique if you've already got "debian-40r2-i386-CD-1.iso" and want "debian-40r2-i386-kde-CD-1.iso" (i.e. the KDE version) - using Jigdo only the differing packages (KDE related) are downloaded, saving several hundred megabytes of downloading.
http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/ - newwatch51, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Yes but I wouldn't have known to do a "apt-get upgrade" unless I saw this digg.
- someguy435, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Thanks. I do keep my systems updated. Doing frequent installs however it's nice to have the most updated media. I'm just being impatient ;)
- fak3r, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1If you have the orig 4.0 release, it's easiest to update after a fresh 4.0/etch install. As root, issue the following:
apt-get update; apt-get upgrade
(all aptitude fanboys please flame away)
Don't burn a new cd/dvd, save the planet, et al - spectre_25gt, on 12/28/2007, -1/+1Countering a generality with another generality. Nice.
- cronot, on 12/28/2007, -1/+1Yes. Not out of place, but really just not newsworthy. This is stuff you'd get with a regular "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade", nothing out of the ordinary, and is something every Debian admin do from time to time anyway. The revision number wasn't even altered, they just updated the installation CDs with the latest packages that were already available (and continuously updated) through the standard repositories.
Breaking news: Microsoft will release updates for Windows with security fixes on next January 8. News at 11. - PeachCobbler, on 12/29/2007, -3/+2Damnit. Not a single highly rated comment. Dugg for Debian.
Oh how we love thee, Ubuntu's forgotten stepdad. - Xanium4332, on 12/28/2007, -3/+1Owned...
- ticktock4, on 12/28/2007, -7/+4You beat me to it.
- ggarron, on 12/28/2007, -11/+3I am sure they are always reading digg/linux_unix section :) I will have to recommend the also my Debian section of my blog.
http://www.go2linux.org/taxonomy/term/1 - twiztidsinz, on 12/28/2007, -9/+1He's making the same point I am.... Linux isn't secure and problem free just because it's Linux.
Linux isnt inherently perfect, development of linux is no different than the development of Windows (or OSX for that matter). Code gets written, exploits/problems found, fixed, more found, fixed, then it's released, more are found still, more fixed, etc etc etc.
The only difference is how they are received:
Windows releases a patch/fix, people use it as a reason to bash Windows
Linux releases a patch/fix, the same people praise Linux for being perfect. - viksmaester, on 12/29/2007, -10/+1who gives a flyin *****
- JasonCox, on 12/28/2007, -16/+1"Debian GNU/Linux 4.0"
Holy crap, Microsoft's Marketing dept got to the Debian people! - chaoswings, on 12/28/2007, -20/+4Is it just me or do you find it odd that people post information about software and OS updates on digg?
I don't know exactly why but it seems so out of place. - ticktock4, on 12/28/2007, -25/+3Security fixes? I thought Linux and open source apps were secure because everyone sits around auditing the source code since it's available.
- twiztidsinz, on 12/28/2007, -26/+1"This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustment to serious problems."
WTF? I thought linux was the OS of the gods.... perfect in every way without any exploits, problems or virus'.......
Has there been some misinformation?? Is linux not inherently perfect????
