- dooooo, on 08/22/2008, -4/+17Good news .
People are looking for stability , versatility and security .
In other words , they are looking for Debian even without knowing it .
On the other hand , Relying on Fedora as a base for a platform sounds suicidal to me . - gbjxc, on 08/22/2008, -0/+8That looks awesome. Having GTK/Qtopia/Debian will give developers a leg up on the iPhone's one SDK, I think.
- HonoredMule, on 08/22/2008, -0/+6Not forgetting...just remembering that it was the ONLY significant security issue in 15 years. Most alternatives, especially proprietary ones, can't hold a candle to that.
- stix213, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5I can't wait for my 8GB MicroSD card to arrive so I can try this out. Standard shipping sure seems like an eternity.
- djbon2112, on 08/22/2008, -0/+5Awesome. When it's released, I might just consider getting myself one!
- caspy7, on 08/22/2008, -1/+5Yeah, I'm sure for years to come that I'll remember 2008 for Debian's 15th anniversary...

- stix213, on 08/22/2008, -1/+5If you are worried about syncing to a Windows machine, I doubt you are the type of user that Openmoko is targeting right now.
- stix213, on 08/22/2008, -0/+4The phone is designed so the user can easily open up the phone and play with its guts, so a slim phone design like the iPhone, which won't even let you change the battery, wasn't going to be practical.
2.5G Edge is planned for the successor to the Freerunner - codename GTA03, and 3G is tentatively planned for GTA04. - tech42er, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3You can get the Freerunner now, use the OS it comes with, and flash it later when Debian's released. If I had $400, I'd get it.
- stix213, on 08/22/2008, -0/+3Debian for the FreeRunner has been available for almost a week.

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Debian - starkruzr, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2Because no manufacturers who make anything resembling modern basebands want to incur the wrath of the carriers by providing specifications to communicate with 3G networks to groups making completely open Linux devices. It would gimp the carriers' "charge for simple things that would otherwise easily be free because they can be done on the handset" business model.
- Ellipsys, on 08/22/2008, -3/+5Great. I love the software, but the hardware needs great improvement before I can invest. Give me 3G. Give me the form factor and design similar to an iPhone or at least HTC Touch Diamond - it needs to fit in my pocket easily and have minimal "wasted space". Give me Quad Band. Give me a faster processor, more RAM, and a (slightly) larger screen. Then I'll ditch my iPhone for an OpenMoko powered device, but until the hardware catches up with the software, it remains a developer curiosity from my point of view.
- Ellipsys, on 08/22/2008, -1/+3But why? This is one of the key problems with public "Hey, look what Linux can do!" initiatives it seems. We have a diamond here - why package it in a turd?
- smotpoker, on 08/22/2008, -1/+2"Can it sync with Windows or Mac. Does its PIM software play good with the Windoze wares."
I cannot speak from experience, but I imagine it can sync with Windows and/or Mac fairly easily... one would think syncing is one of the first things implemented so it can be used to help with further development. I don't know exactly what you mean about the PIM software. In my limited experience, PIM software is run from the Desktop system to sync with the portable device and has no interaction with other software on the Desktop
"And one last thing, I have been waiting too long for OpenMoko. I've been waiting for half a decade now."
Half a decade? It was first announced in '06... are you clairvoyant or a secret insider with access to FOSS 0day ideas well before anyone else? And why exactly is it so horrible waiting five years for something completely new (assuming you really have been "waiting half a decade") yet not for an new *revision* of the same thing like that doesn't do half of what it was supposed to (Vista)? - starkruzr, on 08/22/2008, -2/+2Don't count on it. The baseband will remain crappy at the very least; no 3G of any kind and not even 2.5G.

- Ellipsys, on 08/22/2008, -1/+1I'm glad to see there are some improvements on the way. However I contest that they should design a slim phone that is able to be opened, rather than say "whoops, that's just not going to work". Several years ago I owned an iPAQ PDA which was about the same thickness as an iPhone today - it had a removable battery and wasn't impossible to take apart. All they need to do is give the instructions necessary to the user to open it up - they can still make a slim design. Rationale like this is part of the reason that the open source community meets with resistance at times "We don't care if its clunky, ugly, or difficult to use, as long as it is open and /may/ have features", which is JUST AS BAD as Apple's "Its pretty and usable, but non functional, and if you complain its your fault for wanting a feature".
