- shassard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PHLAK Littleboy will also install to USB drives:
http://www.phlak.org/modules/news/ - gbm85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Right, Linux would be the next MS if they could be... except Linux isn't a company. It's not an organization. It's not a group of people. Linux is a kernel. If everyone who currently works on Linux stopped... other people could pick up the slack. Just look at what happened to XFree86 when they changed their license. Every major distro jumped to x.org. Saying Linux wants to be the next MS is like saying the Internet wants to be the next IBM. It just makes no sense.
- notman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why couldn't this be linked directly to http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ rather than through someone elses page? I hate multiple links to get to the source.
Anyways, this looks very cool. I'll definitely be checking it out. - teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For instuctions on DSL to pen drive:
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#How_Do_I_Install_to_a_USB_Pendrive.3F - FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1slack31337, How do you have this setup? This is what I've been playing around with: http://www.jason3d.com/blog/my-usb-key/
- PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You have to mod it. I'm looking for one that's already set up for USB drives.
- slack31337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am also using DSL of a usb stick and running in under winblows it's sweeet
- FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The MetroPipe Virtual Privacy Machine:
http://www.metropipe.net/ProductsPVPM.shtml
Uses QEMU and a DSL image to run a DSL based virtual machine from your key chain. I'm tweaking around trying to get their QEMU config to work with a standard DSL image. - PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ohgr. Did you have to install that through the CD?
- 31337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0don't you mean damn useful?
- PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is there a linux distro that i can just load on my pen drive without, you know... having to change anything?
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^ see title
- FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, compared to Fedora Core 4 DSL does suck. But then that's like saying roller skates suck compared to a BMW. Each have their purpose.
- seanharrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DSL rocks. Try installing it on one of your older computers and see the difference.
- FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was looking for a way to use something like QEMU to run a virtual machine with the latest DSL from a USB key on windows. There's all kinds of info out there on getting your system to boot off a Linux image from a keychain but I'm not looking for a virtual machine like the metropipe thing but with the latest DSL.
- squeakypants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0old news but damn good

For the new 2.0 version, there is a .vmx file to use with VMware's free player and the DSL .iso. You can run that on Windows.
You can also load DSL in QEMU from the CD and possibly from .iso file on HDD. I had that running at one point.
I had a boot floppy that made my old laptop boot to USB where I had a DSL image also.
Damn Small is not meant to be the be all, end all of distros. Like others, it serves a specific niche. Old hardware, limited ram, rescue disk, tweak your own LiveCD, pick your poison. If you don't like it, move on, but it does pack a lot of power in 50MB. - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, you don't have to do any modding yourself. They have a pre-built version for USB drives.
- flibby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've used flash linux, which loads off a USB key and is pretty slick. It works with very recent hardware (and hopefully old as well). If you want a custom kernel, it can be a real pain, though.
http://flashlinux.org.uk/ - nukey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This one has been living on my USB-drive for about half a year now http://slax.linux-live.org/
Start your comp with the CD and look for a tool in the home-directory (forgot how it's called) to install slax to your USB drive. Done. - juicewvu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm digging because DSL rocks, the article is kind of lame tho. Ubuntu++
- FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks ripcrd. It is funny to hear Linux users bash one distro or another since a main focus of Linux is that if you don't like option 'A' there is always 'B', 'C', and so on. Don't like KDE, there's Gnome, XFCE, FluxBox, ICE, etc.
- faysalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys ...
www.slackware.com
Get ZipSlack!:) - slack31337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0friedgeek I used the files under the File: dsl-2.0-embedded.zip all you need to do then is put the drive in the usb and run the dsl-windows.bat file it will fire up qemu virtual pc environment then boot DSL. The only thing it is lacking is the ability to manipulate the directories on the host pc. But i guess you could boot into it for that
- PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll just make a disk tonight.
- DukunSakti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For ready-to-run DSL VMware Virtual Machine disk, get it at four.pi.one:
http://www.4pi1.com/ - b7j0c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DSL is interesting and serves a niche. it is not intended to compete with ubuntu or fedora....fluxbox is not trying to compete with gnome and kde.
the only comment i have about the article is that running firefox will bring in a lot of dependencies, chances are your DSL will not be DS once it is installed. but i cannot recommend dillo, i would just as soon run lynx. - AsLanFromNarnia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DSL is teh cool
- batv0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Comparing Fedora Core 4 to DSL? Is there a comparison? DSL is for getting the junk boxes out of the closet and in operation again. I would use FC4 for a desktop/server. IMHO.
good digg to bring awareness to others. - Dezrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i run DSL on my P266 / 96MB Ram / 4GB HDD [ Installed to Harddisk ] Works and Runs like a champ other then the scene Res problem i had or the make and install cmds it ROCKS
- FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoah? Fell off the home page?
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've tried dsl-embedded on a win xp box - sweet.
- dsljohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the Dig guys!
b7j0c, DSL has had Firefox included in the base iso for about a year now.
For those who are interested we just posted DSL-2.1RC1 and Robert and I would love some feedback.

- ph3rny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dupe
I downloaded it the last time it was on digg - N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0piratefsm said "is there a linux distro that i can just load on my pen drive without, you know... having to change anything?"
dsl-embedded runs in windows. Havent tried it yet, forgot about it until this.
BTW, anyone else notice the new digg comment posting?? - PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i meant one that you don't need a CD for... DSL still requires you have it in CD form first
Sux0rz - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0DO NOT USE VULGAR LANGUAGE
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0me too, me too!

Sorry but if they could they would be just another MS. Just like stupid old Apple.
