- schestowitz, on 07/27/2008, -4/+16Go fro Fedora. IGEL is a Microsoft partner.
- earthforce1, on 07/28/2008, -0/+11When PC vendors offer linux, it naturally assumes they will have supported drivers. This puts more pressure on hardware vendors to open their specs and offer linux drivers if they want to stand a chance at being designed into these systems.
- Aanidaani, on 07/28/2008, -1/+8Now if we could just find this "Glacier" company...never heard of them.
- wonderbriefs, on 07/28/2008, -0/+7While this may be new to Glacier Computer, this isn't new for industrial computers as a whole. My first experience with Linux was on a the controller module for a Nordson Logicomm.

They don't boast the fact that they use Linux, but the software underneath the interface is the Linux kernel.
The more impressive industrial computer that I worked with was the Axode. We used this thing for all kinds of custom lines for imaging and data engineering.

*sigh* Sometimes I miss playing with that thing. It had the best OCR capabilities of anything I've seen in my life. - stevan2002, on 07/27/2008, -1/+8Great news! If I had money I would buy one,
- wigren, on 07/28/2008, -1/+6Maybe they are, but it doesn't change the fact that they're bring positive attention to the FOSS community.
- yodaj007, on 07/28/2008, -1/+6News flash: You don't speak for everyone. There are five comments before yours. Hmmmm...

- td001, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5regardless of the distro, it's ALWAYS cool for a vendor to offer linux, and can only help the overall Linux 'community'
..of course everyone has their favorite choice of distribution, and that debate is a whole other discussion.. - wazzledoozle2, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5Wow, that website is horrid.
- wonderbriefs, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4You: "No average person"
Look at their website. These are not computers for computer enthusiasts, for desktop users, for probably any use that you've had so far.
These are industrial computers. The customer they're talking about is a corporation with specific needs.
Get a job. - wonderbriefs, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4No that's not. Look at www.axode.com and show me a mac pro that's been implemented in any similar way.
- wonderbriefs, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5Not the same market at all. Customizable Industrial Macs? Dream on.
- sexybobo, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4Hey if dell started selling Optiplex with linux installed and it was cheaper because you don't have to pay for windows my company would be all over them, We have a site license and it is stupid that we have to pay for the OS twice for each pc. or they should sell Dells with no OS

- wonderbriefs, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3Reply @fudged72,
I checked your comment history. Carry on. - Smogtdi, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Most customers for Kontron's industrial SBC computers use linux, I'd say none use M$ products as most of them use customized stripped down command-line OS running off compact flash IDE cards.
http://us.kontron.com/products/boards+and+mezzanin ... - inactive, on 07/28/2008, -2/+4As long as you don't support the company itself, by providing bug reports or any sort of payments, I see nothing wrong with using the distro. Same goes for Novell - Maybe it's 'morally' wrong, but it's not like they're going to get 99c every time you boot up.
- wazzledoozle2, on 07/28/2008, -1/+3If a company has the expertise to deploy linux systems, they don't need it to be preinstalled. Any deployment of pc's larger than an individual order would be imaged with a customized OS anyways.
- devnullDood, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2between 3 and 4 grand. OUCH!
- FolkTheory, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2what's the price for this? 1.4 Ghz and 1GB of RAM is pretty good for such a small device...if only i could find pricing
http://www.glaciercomputer.com/everest.html - linksus, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2I like the idea of them using Fedora. I personally prefer fedora. OK it may not be "quite" as user friendly as ubuntu, but its pretty damn close. And I feel fedora is more stable than ubuntu.
- mstrebe, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1I read that like four times before it didn't say "Glacial Computing"
- yodaj007, on 07/28/2008, -1/+2I dunno. I've seen a lot more Ubuntu than I have Fedora on Digg. Which one is hyped more, again?
- jamesdew, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1they even have resized images, eugh
- DteK, on 07/28/2008, -2/+3Interesting choice of distros. I never knew about computers on forklifts but this seems very interesting. I like that they have considered Fedora and have not succumbed to the hype of Ubuntu. I think Slackware should warrant some consideration to as it is a notoriously stable environment. Good news in general though.
- lysdexia, on 07/28/2008, -1/+1Ahem.
It's always the time and place to make jokes. - wonderbriefs, on 07/28/2008, -1/+1Woah there, buddy. Are you telling me that you can get a Glacier computer for free? No? Then how is this construed as making fun of Linux? Are you new to the idea that corporations might be willing to pay for hardware designed with Linux in mind? Are you offended by the fact that some people would be willing to pay for a PC that comes preloaded with Linux?
Seriously dude, can you come back to us and restate your ideas in a way that makes sense? - ethana2, on 07/28/2008, -2/+1I just bought an ubuntu inspiron 1420n from dell. That was a $1020 sale.
I shouldn't have to screw with my computer just to get software that doesn't suck.
Dell. Because you don't have to be a fruit to like good operating systems. - tomarocco, on 07/28/2008, -5/+3Fedora is the Great Granddaddy of hype. I'd take Ubuntu or XP Pro over Fedora any day.
- allnone, on 07/28/2008, -5/+2Customer demand == People, that already have Linux and won't be buying these computers.
No average person is walking around and demanding Linux. The Linux community are the ones demanding Linux and they already have it on their PC's. - supermanred, on 07/28/2008, -5/+1That's called a Mac Pro... http://www.apple.com/macpro/design.html
- randumbusername, on 07/28/2008, -6/+2what is the point of these articles?
- supermanred, on 07/28/2008, -6/+1In other news, the Glacier Computer representative responsible for adding linux to their line of computers was quoted as saying "It really wasn't a big deal, I mean it's only 2 customers...so I downloaded Ubuntu from piratebay and installed it. Seriously, no big deal man..."
- Technopundit, on 07/28/2008, -10/+2They don't want Linux because it's better, they want Linux because it's hobbled, and better for business. Keeps the employees "honest".
- jcwuerfl, on 07/28/2008, -9/+0Meh, whatever. It still has to compete with Macs and with only 1% share of the market its not even close.
- DraconPern, on 07/28/2008, -22/+2Another linux article. 195 and on the front page!? WTF.
- wazzledoozle2, on 07/28/2008, -25/+3News flash: No one cares.
What is Digg?
