Driver bug free and ready for widespread use in...5...4...3.... - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -3/+51"The driver still has bugs and isn't ready yet for widespread use"
so its a normal creative labs product then. - UObean, on 11/07/2008, -0/+42Awesome, it only took them 2 years.
- Chineseyes, on 11/07/2008, -0/+29three years later.
- RoboDonut, on 11/07/2008, -2/+29Creative seems to support Linux better than they support Windows. They GPL'd the EMU10K1 (SB Audigy) driver back in the day, now they've GPL'd this. Meanwhile, tracking down Windows drivers is still a pain in the ass, and Creative wants Vista users to buy new sound cards.
- Obsidian743, on 11/07/2008, -0/+22...and extremely unexpected!
- eggsovereasy, on 11/07/2008, -4/+26Can I still hate Creative?
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -1/+22"The driver still has bugs and isn't ready yet for widespread use."
And yet it's still made of Win.
See NVidia? - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+19daniel_k, what do you think?
- EricAnderton, on 11/07/2008, -0/+19ATI is playing this game too.
NVidia will catch on eventually. - SethEllis, on 11/07/2008, -0/+15Creative drivers have improved a little, but they still aren't perfect. At least they're updating them now.
- twiztidsinz, on 11/07/2008, -0/+14Jesus ***** christ man... STOP TROLLING
***** narutard - EngineerX, on 11/07/2008, -0/+14Wow, I just installed linux/ubuntu for the very first time and was really upset that I didn't have sound.
Now it looks like things are looking up. - schestowitz, on 11/07/2008, -4/+18http://www.hertfordshire.freeserve.co.uk/Activists ...
- Obsidian743, on 11/07/2008, -4/+18OSS FTW!
- MattB123, on 11/07/2008, -0/+13They want everyone to buy new sound cards! They would also like it to be 1992 again.
- ExRe, on 11/07/2008, -0/+13Yes, their Windows drivers still suck majorly. I can't imagine that their Linux drivers are much better.
- RoboDonut, on 11/07/2008, -0/+12>Having a different opinion or voice is not trolling
It is when you act like a jerk. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+12does this mean i can finally use this on ubuntu soon??
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -1/+12Good news, but I still don't see the point in expensive sound cards like the X-Fi.
For 90% of uses, on-board sound is perfectly fine. For the other 10%, just use on-board S/PDIF (most boards these days have them) and plug it into a good receiver. A good receiver would last longer and have more uses than an expensive sound card. - secrity, on 11/07/2008, -1/+12Yet, I still dislike them for some reason.
- Incomp3tnt, on 11/07/2008, -0/+11Oh my god, this is awesome news! Took me freaking ages to configure my Soundblaster. Nice move Creative!
- Obsidian743, on 11/07/2008, -2/+12Good timing. My "Miley Cyrus" virus port will go much easier now.
- PleaseJustDie, on 11/07/2008, -0/+10I sent tech support requests every 6 months since 2005 trying to get linux drivers for my X-Fi, every time I'd get a response saying they'll be available in 6 months.
Then when they finally came they were a huge disappointment. I'm so glad they GPL'd this because now the open source community will be able to step up and fix them and get it working beautifully. - twiztidsinz, on 11/07/2008, -0/+9Having a different opinion is perfectly fine and encouraged in civil societies, however spouting rhetoric with the sole intent to incite and anger people IS trolling and looked down upon.
- Purin, on 11/07/2008, -1/+10So ET:QW, Doom 3, Quake 4, Warsow, and Alien Arena aren't games?
- ExRe, on 11/07/2008, -0/+8There are plenty of games for Linux. Oh wait...TROLL.
- twiztidsinz, on 11/07/2008, -1/+9You can actually play MANY games on Linux using WINE or a port.
Some game companies have even made Linux versions of their games, much like the Unreal Tournament series.
Dont bother trying to talk sense into this fool anymore, he'll just keep coming at you with a variation of the typical immature response of "no u!!!!!11!!11" - DteK, on 11/07/2008, -0/+8Yeah I would say so. I got three X-Fi cards and who knows how many SBLive cards that need a home. Good news indeed.
- Barackalypse, on 11/07/2008, -0/+7Screw Creative, I can't even get my X-Fi to install correctly under Vista 64 (its not my computer, it works fine in 32 bit XP).
- haterofps3, on 11/07/2008, -0/+7It took them long enough but this is huge as far as I am concerned. I mean if this works and I can get sound to work in COD4 through wine on Ubuntu I am done that was all I wanted.
- HonoredMule, on 11/07/2008, -0/+62-3 years sounds about right, assuming there isn't excessive stonewalling with still hidden hardware opcodes or interfaces.
- DteK, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6I have quality speakers as well and used X-Fi in my P4P800-E Deluxe disabling the onboard sound. Ran like that for some time and ended up switching to onboard cause I needed the slot. The only difference I found was that the X-Fi software allowed me better control to tune my sounds than the software for the onboard sound.
- HonoredMule, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6*working* drivers.
Anybody remember how many mutually incompatible drivers were released for the many "implicit versions" of the original SBLive? - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6its for some reason just one of those companies that have to be hated like Exxon or Halaburton.
- sephiroth965, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6Too bad I still can't get my EMU 1212M card to work in Linux.
- PleaseJustDie, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6I've noticed a huge difference with games that support EAX. Hardware accelerated sound in games is absolutely phenomenal. And back when I first got my X-Fi I also noticed a frame-rate increase in some of the game I had at the time, I guess since the sound card has its own processor and ram on it it was able to take a load off the cpu.
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5Narut0? A l33tist and a Narutard?
Jesus ***** christ it's '4chan' you want not Digg douche bag. Get a life. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5Why?
- Genma, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5any major boost to sound quality and performance are just placebo effects, that's why nobody does benchmarks with creative hardware. if you compare the snr to any popular integrated chipset mfg paying the azalia tax it's nearly the same. the "quality" you are hearing can be achieved by manipulating the gains and eq that are adjustable through any decent driver, ie. realtek.
you don't even need creative hardware to run eax any more, they made it so that everyone has to install their drivers to run games. they had to do this and take over development for openal to keep from becoming redundant. both those "standards" are hardware independent now so buying creative cards is basically just contributing to software incompatibility considering all the bugs they cause. they failed at monopolizing gaming audio so now they're just a pain in the ass for developers. - Peterix, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5wait 5 months to next release or compile it and use it now :]
there'll be some how-to floating around the net any time soon if there isn't one yet. - Orbity, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5I will concede that this is good news, but Creative STILL SUCK. Anyone remember Daniel Kawakami, also known as Daniel_K?
- secrity, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5It shouldn't suck for very long; popular drivers that have mfr documentation get fixed pretty fast. At least it isn't a buggy closed source driver.
- carlosos, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5Because Creative is the company that did NOT want X-Fi drivers for Vista to work right just so that people have to buy the X-Fi 2 or whatever the new ones were that had Vista support. They threatened someone on the forums that he has to stop helping people getting those cards working.
Creative is still on my DO NOT BUY list because of that but I'm happy about this change since I have a computer with one of those cards and I wanted to get a new PC and change this PC to a Media Center PC running Linux. - antdude, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5I use SB cards because of hardware EAX in games. That's all.
- zigforjustice, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5Maybe this is a driver from Creative that will actually work this time...?
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5I love it and I hate it. It encourages the belief that we all think "Who cares if it sucks? It's ***** Open Source" but in reality it's only the indirect benefits of Open Source that /we/ care about.
- haterofps3, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5New features aren't a big deal for me I just want sound when I play games through wine. :)
- carlosos, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4HonoredMule, I believe it is real. Look at the tail, that tail should provide enough additional power to keep the pig in the air. The pigs are also pretty thin for pigs.
