- ileftfark, on 09/14/2008, -0/+23Fairly good article, but is from May. We are up to v2.02 now.

...seriously? - johndavidjack, on 09/15/2008, -0/+6Not that any of this was insightful or breaking news, but dugg for VirtualBox. The new release(s) 2.x have been great.
- psion01, on 09/15/2008, -0/+4Huh?! I've been running Windows XP using VirtualBox under Ubuntu Hardy for a week now without any difficulty. Mind you, my requirements are minimal ... I just want Access. What kind of annoyances did you run into?
- Mark2600, on 09/15/2008, -0/+3Easy to do in Linux. Set VirtualBox to be active in Workspace X, use Compiz with mouse gestures to switch from workspace to workspace. Seamless!
- Myztry, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2Cool. Alerted me to the new versions.
I mainly use Ubuntu through vbox for PDF stuff as it supports it natively much better than Windows (which is - not at all).
(I think PDF format is great. Can't quite say the same about Acrobat though) - polyGone, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2...just worded it wrong.
- toxictonic, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2You can do what Mark suggested, but instead of using gestures, you can use http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/
- diggspellcheck, on 09/15/2008, -1/+3I have a very noob question, if anyone wishes to take a crack at it. You may bury if you wish.
How do I set the mouse wheel in Ubuntu to scroll one page at a time? I would like to use Ubuntu on Windows machine as Virtual PC but can't figure out how to set mouse wheel. And the whole Ubuntu OS becomes pointless, since I can't surf with mouse wheel scrolling couple lines at a time. - Kamujin, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2I love the speed, but sadly both my macBookPro and DELL XPS 1530 suffer from the "excessive CPU usage" problem which makes it unusable for me.
I do prefer VMWare's automatic bridging also.
That said, in the right situation, VirtualBox is a great tool. - bratterscain, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2If you're using Firefox, search about:config for mouse wheel or mouse scroll, forgot which one, and set it. Last time I tried, the Ubuntu global mouse config doesn't carry over into FF so I had to set it manually.
Ok, it's mousewheel.withnokey.numlines (set number of lines to scroll) and mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines (set to false). - MtheoryX, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2I did RTFA...it's not mentioned there.
However, checking the page for VirtualBox indicates they support OS X as a host system (although 64 bit support is not present at this time):
http://www.virtualbox.org/
So, if you're asking if you can run Vista on your OS X system (meaning you have a Mac), the answer is yes (warning: don't do it with less than 2GB RAM).
If you're asking if you can run a virtualized install of OS X on your Windows Vista system (meaning you don't have a Mac), the answer is no. Mac OS X does not officially support being run, virtualized or other, on non-Mac hardware (google "hackintosh" for workarounds). - RobotBuddha, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2Agreed on how great it's been. I haven't used it in a while under linux, and picked it up again to play with chrome. I can't believe how fast this thing's gotten. Chrome under virtualBox actually beat out firefox running natively on benchmarks. Which isn't to say too much about the browsers, rather the fact that the load of running under a virtual machine was so limited.
- egthareal, on 09/15/2008, -1/+3Pretty cool. So if I get this right, I can run both OSx & vista on my computer at the same time?
- pinchduck, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2I use it every day and love it. Those guys have done a fantastic job. It allows me to keep Windows in a little jail, where it belongs, and only run what I need (visual studio). Everything else I do in Linux. Seamless mode is just the icing on the cake, but it makes (IMHO) a huge leap in usability, as it reduces the computer-within-a-computer feeling to almost nothing.
- moduc, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2VirtualBox wish list:
1) VirtualBox can shrink and expand memory as it uses, instead of just take a large chunk
2) Break the 2 Gig of RAM limit. Maybe give an option of no limit. This is an option, so the old way still works.
3) Copy and paste files across the two machine
4) Import and export virtual disk to more formats (competitor)
5) Drop the virutal disk ID scheme. Just add virtual disks to a virtual machine. Indicate which one is primary, and which one is slave, and start it up. (the ID currently use would prevent you from copying the disks and use both in a same time. You have to go certain way to get it to work).
6) Drop the upper limit for the drive. I understand that we can just set it very big, and the don't have to worry about it.
7) Include a shrink disk. The disk gets bigger, and you have to do many things to shrink it. It would be nice if this is included and works. Currently, you have to zero out non-used area for example.
8) Make it even faster
9) Works with Linux distro to have download of virtual disks that have Linux preinstalled.
10) Making managing the virtual machines easier. Just open file, select the virtual machine file. Right now, it has to be at certain place for it to work. - psion01, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1This is a desired feature that isn't implemented (at least not through the GUI) on the system level yet. However, you can change the scroll speed of the mousewheel within Firefox. Type "about:config" in the address bar ... there are two settings you'll need to change: mousewheel.withnokey.numlines, and mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines. They're right next to each other, so scroll down to them, double click on the first and increase the value from one to ten, twenty, or more, then go to the second and double-click it to toggle it from true to false.
There. The effect should be immediate. - valkyries, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1What would be cool, at least for me, is to run one OS on one screen and on a separate screen run a second OS. all this coming out of one box and my mouse can seamlessly go from one OS to another.
- valkyries, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1thats not really seamless thou, i just want to move my mouse from one screen to another with nothing extra to do. oh and i want to do this with Vista and OSX
- jasmus, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1I do this with parallels on osx. I have full screen XP on one workspace, and spaces is set to trigger when i move my mouse to the top right of the screen. I can't see a reason this can't be done with multiple monitors and virtualbox.
- sirbeta, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Definitely going to give this a shot. It would be pretty nice to get the best of both worlds without needing to dual boot.
- MadcapLaugher, on 09/14/2008, -1/+2Good article explaining one of the coolest things you can do with Virtual box.
- thinboyslim, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1I loved it until I realised you cannot use it at work or in any corporate environment. If you want to do that it suddenly isn't free.
- thinboyslim, on 09/15/2008, -1/+2Not when the front page of the website says this...
"the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL)."
Turns out you need a license from Sun to run this on a corporate machine. - PARTyZAN, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Unfortunately Synergy has been unmaintained for quite a while now. It has quite a number of issues in Vista.
Anyways, I'd like to see this project revived. It is a very useful app, and it doesn't have any equivalent alternative :( - snapcase, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1That's pretty normal.
- RobotBuddha, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1The one thing that bugs me about doing this is differences in window managers. I'm used to being able to just double click a window to minimize it under linux, but windows has a different behavior. Anyone know, off hand, of an easy way to change that under windows so a windows app running in seemless mode under a linux host will be able to minimize with a doubleclick on its window?
- RobotBuddha, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1The vista + osx part might be a problem. Under linux, with both compiz and kde's desktop effects you can just set the mouse to trigger workspace changes when it hits the corner of the screen.
- moduc, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1It's free if you use the open source edition. The commercial edition gives you a additional install, which your mouse would move across the border without pressing the host key. I think it also allows you to share files and clipboard too. I know it does, but I am not sure this is in the commercial only edition or not. Also, USB stuff needs the commercial edition.
- polyGone, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1I use this set up on two machines. One is Ubuntu inside of Vista and the other is XP inside of Ubuntu. Both work well, but you're not going to be able to use a 64bit OS inside of VB. You're also not going to be able to get good 3D acceleration, so no Maya or Max running inside of VB. You can set up shared drives and I work, more or less, seemlesly at work and home. Good Stuff. Helps when you need to test things in IE.
- polyGone, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1I run XP inside of my iMac, so I don't see a problem with running Vista. The only reason I don't run that in VB is because VB doesn't support 64 bit operating systems.
- melonhedd, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Too bad the "seamless" windows don't show up on the taskbar. You also can't drag and drop files between the guest and host.
- inajeep, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1That's ok as the VPN software (for XP) I use for work won't function in it. Actually vpn software in general doesn't seem to work well. Although it just means I'm new to it and don't understand all the configuration aspects.
- inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Question: How does this work with games?
Would it be a practical solution to build a machine with 8GB of RAM and a nice quad core CPU and expect to be able to run games with virtual box?
Or are there issues with the 3d drivers etc?
I have been wanting to do ubuntu but the games and windows app thing is holding me up, and I don't want to dual boot and be forced to restart my computer just to play a game.
Thanks - fattyb, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Setting up a windows share would solve your drag and drop issue.
- PinkyTheWinky, on 07/27/2009, -0/+1There are thousands of little customisation apps for windows you can find on softpedia. You might find what your looking for there. The other option is of course to change your linux windows to work like windows windows...
- moduc, on 09/17/2008, -0/+1Yes, I did that, but the problem was still there. I go back to 1.6, and it works pretty well for me.
I also have been experiencing problem with upload speed. It's apparently too old to fix (note the comment how it was closed, because it's too old):
http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/83
This problem is reported by many without a fix other than suggestion to not use NAT. - mrBitch, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Vista is 32 bit. Vista x64 is 64 bit.
- mcrules, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Well virtualbox wont allow you to play games unfortunately. Apps like iTunes work, but you wont get the 3d accelerated part like the album "jukebox" view,,
It is cool though. - inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the reply
- TheWindBlows, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1When upgrading Virtualbox you do uninstall the guest additions reboot the virtual machine install the newer guest additions and reboot the virtual machine once more to finalize the update correct?
Running with no issues under Ubuntu 8.04.1 GNOME Desktop Environment, AMD-V enabled, and Virtualbox 2.0.2 .
The virtual machine is a stripped down windows xp thats been used since Virtualbox 1.5.x . For safety reasons on the VM I take quite a few snapshots to prevent any issues's that can come about with a windows machine. - fattyb, on 09/15/2008, -2/+2I think I'm going to want to have sex with my computer after I set this up.
- moduc, on 09/15/2008, -1/+1The version 2.02 is very buggy so far for me. I use it to run Windows XP under OpenSuse host. Most of the time, Windows would freeze, then I have to kill it, and start it up again and it works fine. This happens when I reboot OpenSuse.
It just have to crash the 1st time. I will wait for a while to see if there is a fix for this. If not, I'll go back to 1.6. - diggspellcheck, on 09/15/2008, -0/+0Thanks for the help guys.
- dtfinch, on 09/15/2008, -1/+1This was the most exciting feature I didn't know existed until I tried VirtualBox and noticed it in the menus. Very cool and unexpected. The only downside was it didn't survive a save state & restore when I tried it (Ubuntu Hardy on version 1.6.4). The window bounds stopped updating, and eventually it crashed as I tried to get it working again.
- SimpleAlex, on 12/31/2008, -1/+0very nice content.
