- HCviolence, on 12/28/2008, -3/+22It's nice to see a few lesser known Linux apps.
- santasing, on 12/28/2008, -1/+19My personal cool app of the day is Songbird. It is awesome and well worth all the hype.
- Fratz, on 12/28/2008, -0/+17kmymoney definitely needs more publicity. For the longest time, Quicken was the only reason people stayed with Windows. Now you don't need Quicken anymore.
- jvincent08, on 12/28/2008, -0/+12I don't know, but I can tell you that you can run KDE apps inside of Gnome. When you install the app with your package manager, it will pull in the essential KDE libs in order to run it. You don't have to be running the full desktop environment.
- fossdog, on 12/28/2008, -2/+11GNUCash worked well for me... when I had discipline.
- fossdog, on 12/28/2008, -0/+9Can someone give me some guidance on the mid-to-higher end video editing? I'm not looking to build a studio, but I need to be able to edit audio separate from video, have lots of video "tracks," to switch between, etc. Fade envelopes would be nice. Free-dragging and locking vids would be great. I need to be able to import as wide a variety of formats as possible, but I want easy, pre-config'ed noob output.
I don't need a lot of effects - text and fade are enough. But the editing really needs to be flexible and intuitive. openmovieeditor might be enough for me. I haven't gotten into it yet. I can tell you that Kino, Avidemux, and Pitivi are not enough. Any suggestions for Gnome Hardy (64 or 32)?
Kdenlive looks like KDE only.. I might be wrong. I could always boot into OpenSuSE if Kdenlive is worth it. (My KDE distro of choice.) - inactive, on 12/28/2008, -1/+7Midori web browser should be on that list. It reminds me of the first versions of firefox it's very light, like 15MB light.
- evilgourmet, on 12/28/2008, -1/+7Dugg for KDEnlive, using it and loving it. I can't wait for the next release.
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -4/+9Ktoon is also a really good Linux app. It's a great alternative to the Macromedia flash editor application.
- Timmmm, on 12/28/2008, -0/+5I've tried GNUcash and KMyMoney. KMyMoney is definitely better. It has fewer bugs, doesn't crash and has a nicer and much more logical and easy to use interface.
GNUcash does however have an excellent introduction to accounting in its help pages. Worth installing just for that. - inactive, on 12/29/2008, -0/+4What happened to these guys, it looks great!
http://jahshaka.org/ - inactive, on 12/28/2008, -0/+4I did all my flash work in Macromedia Flash Professional.
- bieber, on 12/28/2008, -0/+4Cinelerra is by far the best free video editor you're going to find.
- gavintlgold, on 12/28/2008, -0/+4Kdenlive is without a doubt the best one available for linux, despite the bugs. Only one that actually worked for my video cast.
- cheeseplease, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3I've tried Midori, Firefox and several other lightweight browsers on two old PCs (one with 128 and one with 192 MB RAM) with Arch linux and have found that Firefox (3.0) runs smoothest of all of them, to my surprise. It turned out to be very usable, I could have a youtube tab and two digg tabs open at the same time while still being pretty usable. The other browsers all became very slow or crashed.
- smotpoker, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3I have very little experience in that department and the only ones I can think of that you haven't mentioned are cinelerra and audacity. I'm pretty sure there are others but avidemux has always been able to do what few tasks I've needed so... I can only suggest googling for tutorials :P
- timedalkat, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3Cool, powerful, and otherwise expensive applications...could be replaced by these cool, powerful and free apps.
- XeroXenith, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3I dugg him up. Would you rather he wasn't joking?
- fossdog, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3Thanks. I had problems the last time I tried. Not including Amarok.. But that was a few releases ago. I'll give it a shot. Thanks.
- Vadi0, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3Best screenshot tool ever: http://gscrot.ubuntu-projekte.de
Take a screenshot, edit it, add highlights, upload - all within one well-designed program. - Stonekeeper, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3Never used it, but heard good things: http://lives.sourceforge.net/
- Vadi0, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2Homebank here.
- P5ycHo, on 12/28/2008, -1/+3Linux needs a cool font.
- paechan, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2Sweet! I was looking for a good video editor for linux and now I found it. Can't wait to try it out, I hope they can keep their promise about the AVCHD cams, because that seems to be a major pain in the ass every time I have tried one.
- grayiscolorful, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2Mob mentality might finally make Jokosher complete
- bruenig, on 12/28/2008, -1/+3Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and just assume that he is.
- whiteguysamurai, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2I just killed my wacom driver trying to get the eraser working.
That's something i hope is worked on in the future.
Gogh is awesome! - roflgamer, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2DuGG!
- cheeseplease, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2Same here. Used to hail Amarok as the best media player but Songbird has taken over for me, especially due to plugin support.
- abbathdoom, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2They should make a list of high profile apps that still don't have enough developers. Top of the list would be GIMP, one of the most installed Linux apps on the planet that has zero funding and jack ***** in the way of developers.
- bud0011, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2ooo, i was looking for open souce video editing project
- XVampireX, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2*****
VSTi SUPPORT WILL! - kahn2001, on 12/28/2008, -3/+4you mean adobe flash editor application?
- porl, on 12/28/2008, -4/+5i don't care. neither, it seems, does anyone else.
- dimer0, on 12/28/2008, -5/+6No need for desktop finance apps - just use mint.com ...
- xiangxianni, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1You should have mentioned “synergy” on that list. If you haven’t tried it or don’t know what it is you should find out. There is no doubt that after you give it a try you will think it to be the coolest of the coolest apps out there for linux.
http://ubuntuguide.net - Timmmm, on 12/28/2008, -1/+2I've tried lives and cinelerra. Both have extremely stupid UIs, are really hard to compile and crash a lot.
- fossdog, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1Thanks, smotpoker, gavintgold, and bieber.
Took me a bit to get back to you. I appreciate it. - Midnitte, on 12/28/2008, -1/+1(psst.... Macromedia was bought by Adobe)
- thebloodvayne, on 12/28/2008, -2/+2Methinks nobody got your joke :p
- Zadernet, on 12/28/2008, -3/+2Those sort of remind me of one that my linux friend is working on. Here's the page for it:

- s34mu5, on 12/28/2008, -43/+6linux sux WINDOWZ IS DA BEST
VISTA 4 EVA
im joking. :) I support open source to the max, but I would rather use something I paid for my main documents and test out open source on my secondary PC
