- hiphopjon, on 08/10/2008, -2/+18linux is for people who know what the hell they are doing on a computer,
- Rolcol, on 08/10/2008, -0/+12No thanks.... I don't know where your hands have been.
- kilya218, on 08/10/2008, -1/+13Use 'nice' and change the priority of it. Works great. I run it seamlessly on my machines.
- Rolcol, on 08/10/2008, -1/+11Parts of it are. The core isn't because they don't want people to reverse engineer the code and send back false work units.
- Bense, on 08/10/2008, -3/+13If they want me to donate my power + cpu, They better do all the tedious work for me, so that all I have to do is install the service.
- arjie, on 08/10/2008, -0/+9That is correct, but they're not just normal gerbils, they're super gerbils with sixteen limbs and teeth the size of a stadium. And now you've made them angry.
- AngelBunny, on 08/09/2008, -1/+7does the linux version use the gpu? ...
- Rolcol, on 08/10/2008, -1/+6I like gerbils. Linux is much stronger than Windows when it comes to security.
/Proud Linux Fanboy - Rolcol, on 08/10/2008, -1/+6I like FAH. I've finished 185 work units.
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype= ... - Jennica, on 08/09/2008, -2/+6I can't get this to setup right.
- neko, on 08/10/2008, -0/+4I used F@H for a while, and don't remember it being so complex. However, I see from the screenshots that they've changed it a lot, adding a little GTK interface and an "install" script to make it run as a system service.
F@H is a nice idea, but I would not trust a closed source 'installer' to set up a system service on my machine. When I ran it, it was just a single, statically linked binary, which you could dump in your home directory and run it from the terminal. No fuss, more control, and a lot less dodgy.
(apologies if this is a double post, digg's Web 2.1 bouncing comment box is getting on my nerves) - slythfox, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3F@H could at least make the binaries redistributable, so that it could be included in Linux distributions.
- tdurden, on 08/10/2008, -1/+4No. According to the site...
"The client runs on Windows XP and Vista for now. (Linux and OSX may be a possibility in the future.)" - vpshockwave, on 08/10/2008, -0/+2Cause windows users don't *actually* use their computer right?
- Aelbric, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1There were definitely some problems with the BOINC client when they converted to the new core. That was some time ago though. The releases for at least the last six months have been effortless to install and run
- santaliqueur, on 08/10/2008, -1/+2And everything he's installed afterwards? I doubt it.
- inactive, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1"Configuration Folding@home in linux is not as straightforward as installing on windows."
No ***** sherlock, go back to modifying your desktop environments over and over, while we do some work. - inactive, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1This is actually pretty decent how to. This is also the unofficial how to for linux at folding@home forum:
http://foldingforum.org/viewforum.php?f=5 (The first sticky thread) - AngelBunny, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1cuda ftw! (i've been using it myself)
i'm forced to use windows instead of linux or osx not because of the lack of cuda support but the drivers are terrible. they work (sometimes) and other times they just lock up the computer. it is really depressing actually.
my guess is the gpu support will come when linux gets better nvidia drivers for CUDA. i can't wait to play with openCL! i wish apple wasn't so secretive though.. - toshibu, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1Soon, and only for nVidia cards.
- courtjester555, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1BOINC is in the Ubuntu repositories and handles many projects like this. I'm running projects from SETI and climateprediction.net. You just have to make sure to install the client AND the manager.
- wrestlingnrj, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1Keep it up, I think I'm at just over 1,000 Work Units. I was able to get it installed on a few computers at work under my name though. Same name I use for digg.
- Rehumanize, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1What needs configuring? Back when I used it, I just entered my information and let it run. This should be renamed to "Configuring a GUI for F@H." I know it's negligible, but running a gui will just use more resources that could be used to run F@H. I really don't see an advantage. There are even progress bars in the console version.
- slythfox, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1debian.
- arizonagroove, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1Interesting, although note that when the article says "First we will download the extract folding@home client from it’s website over here." the link does not go to the Folding@Home website, it goes to help.ubuntu.com. The current version of the Linux Folding@Home client can be got from, big surprise, Folding@Home website. http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download
- Aelbric, on 08/10/2008, -2/+3A better project is the World Community Grid
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/
It works multiple projects including:
Nutritious Rice for the World
Help Conquer Cancer
AfricanClimate@Home
Discovering Dengue Drugs – Together
Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 Project
FightAIDS@Home Project
The Human Proteome Folding work units are very similar if not identical to FAH in both purpose and execution. Running the Berkeley BOINC client, it also has easily installed and functional clients for Windows, Linux, and Mac among others. - ynggrsshppr, on 08/10/2008, -0/+1I agree. Having one place where the world can put its computing power to work is much more appealing than just having everyone donate their time to all the various projects out there.
- aidanwalsh, on 08/10/2008, -0/+0I recently installed F@H on my Ubuntu box using the Origami installer. Very, very easy.
http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/category/folding/ - xMotionx, on 08/10/2008, -2/+2I'm super lost.
- whyufail, on 08/10/2008, -1/+1I've yet to see a convincing argument that F@H produces any data of actual worth rather than scientific wankery that proves and aids in nothing.
- tttaff, on 08/10/2008, -0/+0I had World Community Grid for a while, but it would never send any of my workunits back to their server. I knew it was some configuration setting somewhere, but they've made the client so darned complex now that I uninstalled it. I'm an IT guy, but I don't want to spend the time configuring something like this - I want to donate my idle computer time, and just want to install the software and go. F@H is a little easier to setup, in my opinion, although I agree with the poster who said that it sucks up too many resources when you don't want it to. Again, I don't want to have to fiddle with that.
- hyperkill, on 08/10/2008, -1/+1I laugh in the face of pop-up ads that say I'm infected with spyware.
Thanks, Linux! - tobiasly, on 08/10/2008, -1/+1well said, that's exactly what i thought when i read this.
- lolfanboys, on 08/10/2008, -1/+0"Configuration Folding@home in linux is not as straightforward as installing on windows."
Color me shocked. - ommadawn, on 08/10/2008, -2/+1dugg for actual science on digg
- hiphopjon, on 08/10/2008, -3/+2wanna high five or something?
- lolfanboys, on 08/10/2008, -1/+0Linux is for people who know what the hell they are doing on a computer and don't mind self imposed limitations on what they can do with their PC.
- toshibu, on 08/10/2008, -3/+1Go use Windows.
- YodaJones, on 08/09/2008, -9/+6I had folding at home for Linux installed and it sucked the performance out of the machine so bad it was almost unusable. Even setting up the percentages and background usage didn't seem to help.
- jeremypv, on 08/10/2008, -8/+1Windows users have so many Idle times on their computer
Linux users maximizes their computer - so if you really have idle time on your computer, you have time to install it (and it will surely take time to install it) - santaliqueur, on 08/10/2008, -10/+3Who cares? Neither is 100% of the software you use.
- slythfox, on 08/10/2008, -11/+1Eh, who cares about F@H. It's not open source.
- qbthemc, on 08/10/2008, -12/+1Linux lmao who uses that weak Operating system. I am guessing it is a OS made for gerbils.
- Carbonlord, on 08/09/2008, -18/+3Very UNCOOL to have your friends hit your article and then UN-FRIEND them. Seems Lower than LOW!
- Carbonlord, on 08/09/2008, -18/+2Predugg! Please give my subs a hit when you get a chance, they are all in the favorites:) CarbonLord
