- linuxrebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2clabbergrrl t is configured correctly. Tuning for Max perf may very well break what you have. Out of the box it is configured such so that all available addons (defined by your distro) are able to work without hassle. When it comes to performance tuning the following must be considered.
1. What the hardware can do.
2. What the users environment is.
3. What the user has running on it.
It's often like it was in the days of the first 386 boxes. IBM Compatibles (Later called PC's) had a "Turbo" button. Now the purpose of the Turbo button wasn't to speed up the box. It was actually there to slow down the box so that legacy apps or poorly written apps could run. The same thing may happen here. It is very possible to tweak yourself into a position where you don't run. Also Tweaks like this might just slow you down. (an environmental thing.) So out of the box it is really setup to provide the highest probability of the least problem. Once it is up and running, tweaking becomes easy. If however it doesn't even come up fixing is a bear. - fibr3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Configuring Apache for Maximum Performance
1. Uninstall Apache
2. Install Lighttpd - SpookyET, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2www.lighttpd.net -- 2-3 times faster than Apache.
- clabbergrrl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is it not cofigured correctly out of the box?

This could probably come in handy for all them sites that get the "Slashdot Effect". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoa. You mean you can performance tune stuff? Unpossible! :P
- superjustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd be surprised if configuring apache a different way has the same effect as upgrading the CPU, and Ram.
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's not geared toward the "decent sysadmin"
- lizardbones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He missed something with the choice between prefork and workers - if you use PHP (seems to be pretty much every who uses Apache) you have to use a PHP compiled for threads with workers - otherwise you can't use the workers method.
- illegal_op, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0nice tips.
