- gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Give me an interface made up of those sketches, I would be all over it. That would be awesome.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16http://www.thirdreich.ca/portraitsphotos/full/beetlesketch.jpg
You know what that is? Its a sketch drawn by hitler for the VW beetle, the most successful car in history. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Gloss my ass. They should release it as the paper sketches, that'd be awesome.
- fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13which shade of blue are you looking for? WinXP? Mac? Facebook? Google? MySpace? KDE?
you gotta be more specific, man. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11looks promising. Can't wait for edgy.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12who knows where wiki.ubuntu.com is hosted and by whom, it might not be intended for high load.
one things certain though, www.ubuntu.com is not "digg *****" - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Blue?? Why would you want blue? Just about every other OS out there uses some sort of blue theme. Sometimes you need to separate yourself from the group a little, and I think Ubuntu does that with the orange/brown theme. I like it.
- frouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9http://www.duggmirror.com/linux_unix/Concept_Art_for_Ubuntu_Edgy_Eft/ if it's slow for anyone else.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I know most people hate the gloss. I think that some of the concepts manage to have enough gloss to look modern and clean without OD'ing on it.
- crash331, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9In case you didn't notice, this is a social bookmarking site. Notice bookmarking.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They're just quick sketches, guy. What the hell do expect?
And you dug this story to bash Ubuntu users? Smart... - adinb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8No problem loading the Ubuntu Wiki here.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10thankfully a lot of artists are getting behind the linux effort, (how about lending some talent to the open source game creators though?)
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7who gives a *****, you can customize everything in gnome without any 3rd party software
- netsui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Why did you choose to equate us "ubuntards" to 4th. graders. Is it because the 4th. grade is your typical environment?
Just grow up and move along. Seriously, before you swallow some of that toxic glue...It's dangerous you know. - TheProfessional, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I kind of like the brown color scheme, mainly because they are taking different approach than most other UIs.
- playerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5As any artist knows sketches are to be done quickly and as rough as possible so that you can ditch them anytime without regreting about losing your precious work of art sketch.
In other news, you need to grow up. - slackerbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe people are actually checking the page out before they decide if they want to digg it or not.
Hey, it could happen. - shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6*sigh*.....
se1zure, read my previous comment. (one above yours) - ActivitY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5KDE usually goes for the blue themes, vanilla ubuntu with gnome will usually opt for a orange/brown theme.
so my guess is, never. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You know, if you create three partitions you don't even need to back up your documents e.g. on my laptop I have a root of 4GB, a home of 6GB and a swap of 1GB. All your settings, themes, documents are preserved and it doesn't matter when the install goes pear-shaped.
- LucidParody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3brown is one of the ugliest colors out there. why is ubuntu so hell bent on sticking with this brown theme? it reminds me of poop.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Is it just me, or does "gloss" sound a lot like Microsoft's Aero "glass"? This does look great though, but I'm still not a fan of the Ubuntu brown. Even so, I'll be running Edgy long before Vista, and hopefully they'll include XGL in the default install. That would be sweet.
- mike_douglas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3XGL/Compiz will never be integrated, it's beta software meant to test new functionality in the libraries. AIGLX will be included in the next release, so it will include all that woobly-window goodness.
- barius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@cakefart
You do know that the article is specifically about the GUI artwork right? There are many other projects in the Ubuntu community that are tasked with other parts of the system... - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You stick to your paid apple support then.
And if the question was so simple then why didnt you do a google search instead of being a lazy bastard? - gatorsrule21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You realize we are talking about Linux here, not Windows?
- phenolholic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i'm indifferent to the new look, or any look for that matter. i have a custom usplash, custom GDM (login screen), and custom wallpaper.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love it because it makes Ubuntu unique, but I get a bit depressed looking at it. Still, whenever I change the look, I end up switching back, because it just doen't feel like Ubuntu without the "human" look.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i like the green that foresight linux uses...
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The kernel devs (and Linus) and the people who write the apps are the ones who do all the real heavy lifting in terms of is the one who's focusing on useability, stability, and performance.
When you get right down to it, most of what differentiates one distro from another is the GUI customization, the package manager, and the packages they include by default. Ubuntu has a sweet installer, one of the best package managers, and a theme that's pretty unique. They're doing everything that they need to do, and their user community is growing, and they're not doing anything to comprimise usablity or stability. - ramjet10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I does look pretty, does anyone know if there will be any integration of compiz/xgl in new releases?.
Still I would be much more impressed if as much time was spent on getting fundamental bugs worked out. Ubuntu for me still crashes more often than windows, my network card doesnt work without a wrapper, memory card reader doesnt work, and worst of all suspend/hibernate still doesnt work (with fglrx anyway) - Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It loaded straight away for me.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looking very sharp, I can't wait for this one to come out. 6.06 looked really good, but one with all the glossy effect looks really good.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2XGL/Compiz is still pretty buggy, and will not make it into Edgy. Ubuntu is more about "mainstream", and XGL is a little too on-the-cutting-edge for Edgy. Hey, wait a second...
I think that you pretty much need the proprietary Nvidia/ATI drivers for XGL to work right, and ATI still doesn't have any GPL drivers. That doesn't really work with Ubuntu's ideology. - shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is (obvious to anyone with a mentality at or greater than a 6 year old) not really meant for the public, it's all pre alpha design and rough idea's....
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2still no pictures though :/
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From what I've heard, XGL/Compiz will not be in Edgy. It may be integrated in the next version though.
- bowe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Eh, I don't mind it anymore, apparently kubuntu is going purple though. That should be interesting.
- ubuntudemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's the forum feedback thread for this wiki page :
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=236751 - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well the gloss is much better than the previous concept art, the logo looks nice :) The GDM windows doesn't look too great, due to the colours used... I still dislike the whole brown/orange ("earth") colour scheme... oh well at least it's improving :)
Btw. The wallpapers are still crappy and should REALLY be changed... something simple representing Ubuntu, not some abstract weird looking thing. The gloss on it just made it worse. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IMO, Linux will not become mainstream until you can do everything with your computer and you don't need a command line. Now, you can still use the command line, but for new people who aren't that comfortable with doing that, they could use something else. They already have good package mangers.
- Nerevar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There's a project called blubuntu working on a blue theme for gnome ubuntu.
- randomm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When I first tried to view this article it was at 90 diggs. The page would not load. Now it's at 120+. Are people actually viewing this or are they just digging for Ubuntu?
- bowe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://www.duggmirror.com/linux_unix/Concept_Art_for_Ubuntu_Edgy_Eft/
- mjpatey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice work. As an Ubuntu user who goes several days at a time without having to boot into Windows, I'm looking forward to the new looks.
- primedesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hahah i saw the drawings at the beginning and i said "you've got to be kidding me." i lol'd. and then i scrolled down more. nice looking.
- randomm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, it did finally load after about 5 minutes
- ioannusdeverani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it a lot. I am looking forward to Ubuntu Edgy, but I will not make the same mistake I did last time I tried to upgrade again (using updatemanager to upgrade from breezy to dapper). That broke my system. I had to do a clean install.
When Edgy comes out, I will just back up all my docs, and then do a clean install, and enjoy the new look....... - pobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@L2006
For my first 3 months or so of using linux I never went to the command line at all. And I'm always changing stuff, installing stuff, adding hardware etc...
PClinuxOS was the reason I could do that. It comes with all sorts of stuff built in and set up and has a control panel that lets you do almost everything you could want via a GUI. Version 0.93a out just yesterday www.pclinuxos.com/
That said linux still hasn't quite got mainstream yet. Perhaps when PClinuxOS gets to version 1.0... -
