- EuphopiaB, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33Oh, look! Something ELSE I can't do because my ATi card isn't supported yet.
- Tiak, on 10/10/2007, -5/+29Wait... How is this different from what I've been able to do with plain KDE for quite a while?...
- weizbox, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25vnice, I still love my tilda though: http://tilda.sourceforge.net
- coldshuts, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23You don't need Compiz, just use aterm or Eterm...
- rajulkabir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17No *****. This was a couple clicks in Eterm in 1998.
- LtXenodite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Tilde's not quite as awesome as Tilda.
- Disease, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11ATI doesn't support compiz fusion without serious futzing. No composite rendering support FTL.
Luckily I just got my 8600GT in the mail. - bonedygr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Now I can finally get some real work done!
- jdhore1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9OS X hasn't been out for 9 years *****...get your facts straight or STFU
- sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Because it's in gnome? Geese, I thought it was obvious.
- SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7"Compiz is bloated and mostly a proof-of-concept. Sure, it's neat, but still. I'm waiting for some other system offering only a few of the effects to make it elegant."
Just don't enable every single plugin. - kl0ne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7no, i'm pretty sure he meant 'ftw'. you seem like you must be new to message boards, as this acronym has been thrown about quite a bit. google searches on it, as well as 'how not to make an ass out of yourself' just might pay off for you.
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8It's nothing new for Gnome either, this has been done on every *NIX Desktop Environment / Window Manager for decades. ( And I am not using decades in hyperbole, it has been available almost as long as X has )
- xike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Just because your ATI card "isn't supported" doesn't mean you can't grab some other drivers. I can't use open source or ATI's, but the restricted package manager works fine.
- oneoverzero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6OS X hasn't done it either... Unless it has. If so, link.
- lostboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Rather than use Conky you are using Compiz, so I guess it's a matter of taste as to which to use. Also, this is window manager agnostic, it doesn't matter what term you use, you can set it up to be transparent in the same fashion.
- 35263526, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Good for you.
Some people like their desktop environment to look nice. - pbaehr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"Does it add ANY functionality?"
Does having quick access to a terminal any time you want it without switching out of the gdm count? If someone prefers it this way rather than another why does it upset you so much? There are a dozen ways to get to a terminal. Is having a thirteenth option the end of the world? - jtbandes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6~
- taber, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5If your system isn't quite up to Compiz Fusion, you can also do this with gnome-terminal and a window customization package called devilspie. It works nicely, the transparency and other features are completely customizable, and it doesn't suck up resources in the slightest. Here's a step-by-step walkthrough:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202249&highlight=terminal+desktop - 7of7, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7I'm not sure if this is the same how to from the forums, but if it is it fails to mention to make your scrollbar invisible as well.
- postlogic, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Heh, this is entirely possible and very easy without using Compiz at all. Just check the manual page for aterm, Eterm, urxvt or some other terminal, and you'll find a lot of switches to set to achieve the same thing. 100% background transparency with a borderless window. Simple. People seem to think everything that has to do with transparency needs Compiz(-Fusion).. Compiz is bloated and mostly a proof-of-concept. Sure, it's neat, but still. I'm waiting for some other system offering only a few of the effects to make it elegant.
- standsolid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It's not interactive, but GeekTool for Mac OS does something similar.

This is rad. I'd love to have something like that on OS X. - LegendarySock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I prefer gnome-terminal with the transparency option set up nicely.
- Novagenesis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Partial transparency in a windowed system is HOT.
Full background transparency on a "move to back" window made fullscreen over the wallpaper is potentially MORE hot if used right - Septimus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Wow, this is old. Been doing this for years on lots of different OS's. Unusable without a dull wallpaper.
- knobidy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Maybe 80%, but damn if it isn't nice looking though. I know I couldn't go without it now.
- Novagenesis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I remember when X was getting big...everyone was like "If you use X for anything except multiple terminals, you shouldn't be using Linux at all"
Why is it that some *nix users are -so- anti-visuals? I think computers that come with 1gig ram minimum can handle a little bloat sometimes. - skyshock1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Looks like a virtual terminal is layered on top of your wallpaper in a sort of pseudo-widget type design. Not it's own separate window, but one that's always there when you need.
- nestcrw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Tilda is awesome
- mav73, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wow, I've never used tilda before, thanks for the tip. Much more useful than the topic.
- bruenig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Almost every distro patches like crazy, I can count at least 16 here on arch linux, you might want to check out this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joke
- jeuhrn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Do you sound like comic book guy when you talk, or do you just give that impression on digg?
- enzideout, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3And thus began the Great Nerd War of 2007.
- Ashex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2For all the kde users, use yakuake: http://yakuake.uv.ro/
- Wyzard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That's the ironic part -- the transparency being used here has nothing to do with Compiz's transparency stuff. It's just the years-old "take a screenshot of the wallpaper and use it as the window background" pseudo-transparency that gnome-terminal has always had. This tutorial is just how to use Compiz's window-manager settings to custom-position a window.
(Apparently there's work being done on making gnome-terminal use true ARGB transparency, though, so it really will be blended over the background by Compiz or the like.) - roguetrick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No, he means shell.
- ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Gnome does it too, this is super old
- PathDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How do you focus it?
- TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Tilda doesn't handle multiple monitors very well....
- jsully, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You install XGL first and add it to your sessions... and then run Compiz. Wow that's a lot of futzing.
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You click on it.
- Novagenesis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A computer...duh
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've wanted this for ages, and just last week I read about devilspie (see taber's ubuntuforums.org link above), and felt all special and unique, finally having an embedded terminal.
And now it goes mainstream, frontpaged and top 10'd on digg. Oh well, it's still kick ass. - alamandrax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1FTW == For The Win!
-CaptainObvious FTW!!! - jsully, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It also fails to mention what that sweet clock and system monitor widget are from... anyone know?
- LordofShadows, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I need to find a good styling guide cause more often than not I'm working with a vanilla gnome / kde desktop.
- dibblethewrecke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1...and what is that shell running in?
- ilovenicotine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Vista theme?!? holy douche bags batman!
- lostboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I haven't tested it but it should be no different from normal in terms of focus, i.e. click on it to focus.
