- abbathdoom, on 02/09/2009, -1/+48This is great news. Compiz is just as important to the mainstream adoption of Linux as any of the other touted benefits of linux like improved security. People will never switch unless it has at least as much bling as Windows and OS X.
- specialK16, on 02/09/2009, -4/+37Dugg for SPINNAN CUBEZ!!!
- TheWindBlows, on 02/09/2009, -1/+28It has more bling though. More like until they notice. Meaning good open 3D drivers are highly important too in this realm.
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -1/+28...(Snipped)...people equate Linux to Ubuntu (with its horrible colour scheme too)....(Snipped)
Yep, the color scheme is bad, but with a few clicks....it can be made to be what ever you want it to be - shiddysmurf, on 02/09/2009, -1/+22sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
- kd420, on 02/09/2009, -1/+22Compiz (Fusion?) is great right now, one of the best components of the Linux desktop. I think appearances are important to some degree when it comes to adoption. When lots of people equate Linux to Ubuntu (with its horrible colour scheme too) it is important to emphasize that there is NO sacrifice needed when it comes to aesthetics. That being said, I just can't imagine Compiz being any smoother or more reliable. I have never had problems with it, but if they find a way to improve then I'm all for it.
- LostSoul83, on 02/10/2009, -0/+20As a low-vision user, the person who wrote the "enhanced zoom plugin" for compiz-fusion has done more for me than he could imagine. It makes it easy for me to read stuff on the Gnome desktop. I know there is orca, but orca's magnifier runs at about 15 FPS on a core two duo, which I simply cannot deal with. If you've got compiz-fusion running, give it a try. Hold your windows key and scroll your mouse-wheel up to zoom in and down to zoom out.
I think more accessibility aids like this would greatly increase Linux adoption. A magnifier like that on Windows costs several hundred dollars (I'm not kidding)! The commercial developers of accessibility solutions really enjoy screwing us disabled users. - 1uk34dd0, on 02/09/2009, -0/+18Great news - I love Compiz... it's the most gorgeous looking thing in any OS IMHO. Low on resources and fast!
- JoelJ, on 02/09/2009, -1/+15Nice, Compiz is amazing. Improvements and more features is wonder. Trying to prevent forking and branching is also wonderful.
- grungegbunny, on 02/09/2009, -1/+12Great! Compiz is was a big deciding factor in my decision to switch from Win to Linux.
- elfprince13, on 02/09/2009, -1/+12the sad thing is, I see equally horrendous color schemes on XP (that built in olive one? blech)
- gavintlgold, on 02/10/2009, -2/+12My opinion is, yes, Compiz has enough bling, but not enough usability. There are things that Windows 7 is doing that are making window management much easier. I think Compiz needs to focus on these types of updates, and I think that the direction it is moving in is the right one.
Another gripe: many animations are too distracting, but there are quite a few new animations that could be added. For instance, a "zoom-pop" opening window animation, much like the iPhone's purple notification windows.
With the addition of input redirection, the entire desktop could be redesigned to be completely scalable, and endless. Forget multiple desktops, why not just a single wall that has no boundaries and can be zoomed, windows zoomed as well? Looking at all the operating systems, it just seems like the whole idea of "windows" and a "desktop" is really getting old. Computers need to move forward, not into 3d, but into more malleable space. One shouldn't ever have to overlap windows, just move them aside or scale them for later.
Less ambitiously, I also want the developers to figure out some way to make it easier to use the plugins. Memorizing all the key commands is not a user-friendly way. Instead, they should have effect buttons built in to the decorations, or something. Maybe even a command that invokes a circular menu to apply effects (sorta like left4dead's implementation).
</rant> - Phate8263, on 02/10/2009, -0/+9After trying KDE 4, I'm very much sold on Compiz. KWIN looks nice, but my computer chugs on it. Compiz on the other hand flies.
- ptFoe, on 02/10/2009, -2/+10Aero is better because it uses more resources, there by crippling your OS and forcing you to concentrate on it's awesomeness
- nubtard, on 02/10/2009, -0/+8"With the addition of input redirection, the entire desktop could be redesigned to be completely scalable, and endless. I really like this idea. All you really need is a tiny notification area to tell you what windows are getting updates and a huge mother of a workspace so you can drag your view around. Jumping between windows with hotkeys or zooming out or to windows that have just had activity. - eLuminx, on 02/09/2009, -0/+8I am on the same boat as you are, but i had tried linux long before compiz came into the picture. But i must say the way things work on my box, i think i use and like my Linux desktop more than my windows and Leopard. I use Ubuntu for pretty much all my stuff, and when i get on either windows or OS X to do anything, i just miss the cube, and the rest of the compiz features i use often. Linux is and has been a great and viable alternative for some time now, and with these news it just seems to get better and better.
- mikshir, on 02/10/2009, -0/+8compiz-fusion is yet one additional reason I groan when I have to switch back to a Windows. Some of the modules I feel do enhance productivity. Yes, it's 90% eye candy, but when one must sit and stare at a monitor all day for work, there's nothing wrong with it being gorgeous and cool.
- grungegbunny, on 02/09/2009, -0/+7I know. My laptop is by no means state of the art and it runs Compiz smoothly without any lag.
- InsaneMachine, on 02/09/2009, -4/+11You certainly aren't expecting people who leave the default settings on their routers to actually change color scheme.
- BigglesPiP, on 02/09/2009, -3/+9No, that's windows users.
Linux users configure WPA. - arcticblue, on 02/10/2009, -1/+7They should have gone all the way and named it compizconfig-settings-options-manager-program-gtk. /s
Why did they name it like that? What wrong with just compizconfig or compiz-settings-manager? I don't know..just seems kind of redundant to me. - theOster, on 02/10/2009, -1/+7...(Snipped)...
just wanted to see what that felt like to type out - KAMiKAZOW, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6"Another gripe: many animations are too distracting"
I'm only partially qualified to comment because I use KWin instead of Compiz. So I don't know which animations/effects are enabled by default. However, setting reasonable defaults is (IMHO) only to a lesser extend the responsibility of an upstream project. The main responsibility lies (again, IMHO) at the distributor. So when Compiz has insane effects enabled by default on your distro, file a bug report there. If they are not enabled by default, but just there optionally, shut up -- they don't hurt anybody. - gavintlgold, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5I was not asking them to remove the distracting animations. I just wanted the makers of the animations to focus on more pleasant animations that work better with the metaphor of windows opening and closing.
- BigglesPiP, on 02/09/2009, -2/+6There are no games on my laptop. Or my linux desktop. Windows is for games.
- RobotBuddha, on 02/10/2009, -3/+7I'll be curious to see how it goes. With kde 4.2, I think kwin's compoziting has finally reached an equal level.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5Yeah, KWin rocks. I use it, too. But Compiz is a cool project as well, so I naturally dugg the article. :-)
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4We live in a society where people will pay $4.00 for a low-quality, 20 second ringtone. So yes, I do expect them to change GNOME's color scheme.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5WebKit isn't written in Obj-C. It's C++. Apple just wrote an Obj-C wrapper for Mac OS X around it. Obj-C isn't used for QtWebKit or the other WebKit ports.
I'm not saying that Obj-C is bad, btw, your comparison to WebKit is just wrong. - theOster, on 02/10/2009, -3/+6LOLZ!!!11
- RobotBuddha, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3I think it's because kwin makes a lot of assumptions which don't always hold true to what's supported in the real world. If you're using nvidia, you can get a pretty huge boost by using their beta drivers. Which kind of sucks given that it means beta video drivers combined with beta desktop. But there ya go.
And I'm typing this on jaunty, which is alpha. But, for what it's worth, the whole combination is faster than I've ever seen before. - theOster, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3now we've made "snip" a really weird word to me.
- Peterix, on 02/10/2009, -0/+31. don't use XRender. it's slower than software rendering on most cards. Set kwin to use OpenGL.
2. As XRender is used for the whole KDE desktop right now, it's all unbearably slow. This should improve with KDE 4.3 and Qt 4.5 which have the raster (software rendering) and OpenGL drawing backends.
XRender is only good on old cards which had 2D acceleration in hardware. No new cards have that and XRender is less than useless with them. - XeroXenith, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2You have no problems with it? Lucky. I constantly suffered from these issues in particular -
Borders of windows spaz out and disappear.
Firefox smooth scrolling was INCREDIBLY laggy.
With 'wobbly windows', windows get stuck in corners like a retard NPC in an early 3D game.
Icons in OpenOffice disappear sometimes when you mouse-over them.
Possibly, some of those could be errors with the binary NVIDIA driver. But they forced me back to old boring no-special-effects dystopia. :( - charbo187, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2yes.....that's the problem
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3Compiz and Compiz Fusion were two different things.
"Breaking news
Compiz and Compiz Fusion are merging and are now known as Compiz.
As an immediate consequence, most Compiz Fusion websites are going to be moved to compiz.org in the upcoming days and weeks. Stay aware !
What is Compiz Fusion ?
(taken from AboutCompizFusion Wiki page)
Compiz Fusion is the result of a merge between the well-known Beryl composite window manager and Compiz Extras, a community set of improvements to the Compiz composite window manager. Compiz Fusion aims to provide an easy and fun-to-use windowed environment, allowing use of the graphics hardware to render each individual window and the entire screen, to provide some impressive effects, speed and usefulness. The first Compiz Fusion developer release was Compiz Fusion 0.5.2 on August 13th 2007, shortly after Compiz 0.5.2 was released. First stable release of Compiz Fusion is 0.6.0 released on October 20 2007.
Compiz Fusion is an open-source software project, meaning anyone can use it freely and contribute.
It is important to note that Compiz and Compiz Fusion are not the same thing (see: Compiz Fusion Vs Compiz). There is close co-operation between the developers of Compiz and the developers of Compiz Fusion, though ; in fact, many Compiz Fusion developers are also Compiz developers."
"Linux to Ubuntu (with it's horrible colour scheme too)"
Why do you have to be like that? It's easy, and fast. You can change the entire color scheme anyway you want to.
Also: sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager
Source: http://www.compiz-fusion.org/ - trogdoor, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Hopefully DRI2 will fix that.
- Phate8263, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2KWIN is extremely slow -for me at least. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I can watch a movie on each side of the cube, and spin it in compiz! Just spinning the cube by itself is jerky in KWIN though.
- ArthurSucks, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2It also works great for flash videos that have no full screen. (And some process heavy ones that have crappy full screen ... hulu...)
- LostSoul83, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1I also do that all the time. :)
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -1/+2Spoken like a true troll, cgonster. Congrats, you may find yourself a bridge to live under now.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1I believe that was cgonster's point.
- ArthurSucks, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1I get no performance drop with Compiz running.
- Ebacherville, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1compits makes linux better looking than OSX or windows.. now its a battle of the OS's and i cant wait for them to battle it out and hope Linux kicks but and more developers support linux.. ive been a dabbler in linux for many years and now feel its on par with the rest if not better, now we just need the 3rd partiy devs to support it..
Linux needs a killer app for its OS.. doesn't matter what it is it just needs one killer app. - SmSpillaz, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1The code is not necessarily object oriented, just using c++ as it is a more powerful language and allows for some object oriented bits (for example, text display, timers are real objects with methods that plugins can control)
- TheWindBlows, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Thanks for saying this i figured it was objective C because when i attempted to compiling it was talking about about objective c and other things.
- roxya, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1I *****' love me some Twix.
- UKsHaDoW, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Objective C's framework called cocoa/openstep/nextstep is what makes it so good. Your complaining about boost?
- SmSpillaz, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1What drivers do you use? I have a similar card to one of yours and I get good performance.
Probably in the nvidia-settings module you want to turn on 'OpenGL Sync To VBlank' Additionally, it would be worth starting compiz with the --loose-binding switch.
I'll agree that minimized window icons being blurry does suck, however I don't see us being able to do much about it until wnck provides us with bigger icons or X will provide us with the images of minimized windows. I guess a temporary workaround for that would be to use cairo to draw the icon at it's intended size and draw a HUD like border around it. - renegadeafk, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Tried all of that before, also I have used the latest drivers from nvidia's and ati's site as well as drivers from the respective repos of the distros. I got vsync working once using beryl way abck with ubuntu 6.06 I think it was using the 7600gs.
