- DefaultGen, on 12/06/2007, -4/+37Am I the only one who switched to Ubunutu because I saw Compiz Fusion and I just thought "awesoooooome" ?
- neko, on 12/06/2007, -0/+25That atlantis plugin is looking nice. I wonder how long it will be before we stop using "desktop wallpaper" and start using themeable cube-contents goodies.
Personally, I think it would be really awesome if the contents of the cube reflected the current state of the machine:
- Amount of water reflects memory usage
- Amount of sand reflects... hmmm... swap?
- Number of fish reflects number of processes
- Bubbles going up/down for network use
- Have a treasure chest for each partition, filling up with gold =D
- and try hard to come up with a method of representing processor usage that doesn't take a lot of CPU cycles to display ;) maybe a simple lighting thing.
Having wished for such a candy-filled desktop, I've gotta mention that my absolute favourite Compiz effect is the one that is least noticed - windows fading to greyscale when they're not responding. It's subtle but very cool, and certainly beats the "Hall of Mirrors" effect you get without compositing. - akkibaba, on 12/06/2007, -0/+25These days I get more excited for bugfixes rather than for new plugins, because I've settled on a nice and comfortable mix of eye candy for my kind of computer use.
- screwattackthis, on 12/06/2007, -2/+25You've never used Gnome?
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -0/+19I take it that those two sentences are entirely different suggestions.
- ptFoe, on 12/06/2007, -3/+21Are there any up to date repositories for Ubuntu Gutsy. Trevino used to maintain one for Feisty.
- meghalc, on 12/06/2007, -5/+19How long before Apple steals these effects? Kinda like the Mac OSx "spaces" they took.
- bigsteve, on 12/06/2007, -1/+14Little bit of a stretch to find fault don't you think? If Linux were my OS of choice, and all people could bitch about was window size/placement on close and re-open, I'd feel ahead of the game.
And all these window managers don't only run on Linux, nor do they even share the same developers, at least most likely. - meghalc, on 12/06/2007, -1/+13Ubuntu had very simple Compiz preinstalled way before leopard. Without the bling that people say. Also, the bling is optional, you can turn it off if you like. Its just more option for the folks who like it. Oh you can also show it off to your buddies who use a boring Vista or Leopard! :)
- robdiggity, on 12/06/2007, -0/+12Ubuntu users.
- wedderburn, on 12/06/2007, -0/+12why mod him down, metacity is the default windows manager for gnome.
- Stealer, on 12/06/2007, -0/+12these compiz effects could use some anti-aliasing i hate all those bold pixels in those borders ...
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -0/+12Fellow linux users understanding of those who do not know everything about the os? Who the hell are you people!?
- ozid, on 12/06/2007, -4/+15or not. i switched. and i love it.
- Carburetor, on 12/06/2007, -1/+12I don't have that problem, check your configuration before blaming Linux for your local problems.
- DefaultGen, on 12/06/2007, -0/+10Jeez you pointed out my misspelling and you're getting dugg down! I would've been just as sarcastic.
- Vorin, on 12/06/2007, -0/+10that's why you choose what's best for you.
that's one of the beauties of ubuntu: want to change it? YOU CAN!
i have yet to find a flaw with it that makes my computing experience unlivable. - JohnFlux, on 12/06/2007, -0/+9How does it hurt you if someone writes a plugin that you don't use?
- iWat, on 12/06/2007, -0/+9From the news source:
News in Bugs
* Fix expo termination bugs when no root window is present
* Fix bug in CCSM with MultiList when entering a window match
* Fix crash in CubeDBUS when you would delete an object
* Fix problem in CubeDBUS where objects were being drawn the wrong way around
* Anaglyph now loads after scale, fixing conflict problems
* MPlayer no longer ‘hangs’ in the background after XWinWrap is killed in Livedesktop-Settings
* Fix fish going into the ground in atlantis2 - Vorin, on 12/06/2007, -1/+10he just thinks that because he hasn't gone out of his way to install it, he hasn't used it.
that's nothing to be ashamed of, live and learn. - srg13, on 12/06/2007, -1/+9"Not everyone wants everything on the desktop spinning on the side of a huge cube."
I find that the cube makes virtual desktops a lot easier to use. It's easier to think of a window being, for example, on 'the other side of the cube' as opposed to 'Desktop number three'. - oobuntu, on 12/06/2007, -0/+8maximuse looks handy, plus the toys like snowman/atlantis are a proof of concept - they are often a necessary step before someone comes up with a useful plugin using those developing features.
- antitab, on 12/06/2007, -2/+9Compiz Fusion these days is all about glitz. Don't get me wrong – I'm all about improving the Linux desktop, especially in the compositing range (I'm psyched about KDE 4), but this is ridiculous. Compiz needs some direction. Right now it's a ***** of random and useless plugins being thrown in "just because". Plugin architectures are nice, but also ripe for useless cruft. Let's start using some discretion, guys.
- bigsteve, on 12/06/2007, -0/+7I'm not a Linux desktop user, yet I feel I've gotten so much back out of something I've personally paid so little into (buying distros retail, donating contributing code or bug reports, etc. I know it's free.)
- fr34k5h0w, on 12/06/2007, -0/+6Microsoft's PowerToy for multiple desktops that they had for XP in 2001 allowed multiple desktops. So were they copying Linux or just the idea or concept? Really if a good thing is discovered it should be shared. Remember, imitation is the best form of flattery.
- SteveMax, on 12/06/2007, -0/+6Sadly, people aren't seeing the misspelling and think he's talking ill of Ubuntu, therefore he MUST be buried.
- theaceoffire, on 12/06/2007, -0/+5I have a lot of those affects, but only really use three:
1. Wiggly windows. Makes my desk feel a little easier to work with.
2. Expose, hotkeyed to a window corner so I can quickly rearange all the windows...
3. Cube. Cause I like it. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 12/06/2007, -7/+12Kind of funny having this appear right after a Metacity article gloats over being superior to Compiz-Fusion.
Never used Metacity before... I'm just sayin. - malbolgias, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4Havent you seen the place plugin, get a clue.
- k3ano, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4Runs perfectly fine on the cheap and cheerful x600
- ninja0, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4If you've ever used ubuntu, you've used metacity.
- yogiincork, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4brilliant ;)
- robdiggity, on 12/06/2007, -1/+5Yeah, no, you are wrong about that one. You have at least two options that work. You might have to well, read though.
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4Me too, I'm all settled with Scale, Wobbly Windows, Magic Lamp as the minimize and maximize effect and AWN as a dock.
- SmSpillaz, on 12/06/2007, -0/+4Smart placement?
- Endemoniada, on 12/06/2007, -2/+5Does anyone actually USE these new "features" more than 2 minutes before getting a headache? I just don't get it, why would anyone want a frikkin' snowman inside a desktop?
Compiz Fusion is cool and all, but this is getting a little out of hand, dont'cha think? - srg13, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3I don't really like wobbly windows, but the other two I can hardly live without. Makes managing a lot of open windows very easy.
- Vegiemaster, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3AIGLX is supported if you install the latest ATI/AMD drivers from their site, and Compiz-Fusion runs rather well on my 9600 considering this is the first AIGLX release. Or you can skip out on high-end 3D rendering and use the open source drivers.
- missingnoh4x, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3I've searched and search, and have yet to find a decent repository for Gutsy. And I have yet to get one package to compile from source without errors. *sigh* I should switch distros, Canonical's repositories are just take too long to get up to date. And they still don't have compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported.
- missingnoh4x, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3Driver issues. Fusion works great on my x1200.
- Vinvin, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3Would be funny though... But just as useful as setting your video player to fullscreen mode :P
- sparrowkc, on 12/06/2007, -2/+4I switched a year ago.
- missingnoh4x, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2It wasn't the sole reason I switched, but it basically was the tipping point that convinced me to ditch Windows. That, and my new machine had *****-ass Vista preinstalled.
- Darkx1337, on 12/06/2007, -1/+3Your username is lame. >.>
- missingnoh4x, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2You have some weird fetishes there.
- SmSpillaz, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2Hi guys,
Right now it might seem like a lot of these features are eye-candy only, but there are interfaces being worked on to improve usability throughout compiz. Most of the more difficult 'usability' features are currently being *saved* as it is as we are waiting on a brand new plugin infrastructure, which will change how most of compiz works internally (Think - rewrite). Remember that most of these features have not been created by the actual developers, but the community has pitched in to make compiz-fusion 'just that little bit extra'
Anyways, when input transformation comes you'll see a myriad of cool new features. I wont be able to stop blogging then :D - vedema, on 12/06/2007, -1/+3This is great and all, but it's mostly just superficial eye candy stuff. We have enough eye candy.
- andycr512, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2You can enable antialiasing in your card's specific settings (on nVidia, you may need to do this instead: "export __GL_FSAA_MODE=antialiasinglevelyouwant") and it will work the next time you start compiz (or, alternatively, hit Alt+F2 and type killall compiz.real && compiz to kill compiz and start a new instance without going to the appearance panel. Last time I tried it made text fuzzy, though. YMMV.
- missingnoh4x, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1Plenty of Compiz Fusion plugins are functional. And for those that aren't, what's wrong with some extra eye candy?
- SmSpillaz, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1Errr
plugins-unsupported isn't likely to appear in ubuntu any time soon due to version incompatibilities. You will probably want to check outhttp://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=53 ... on how to install them -
