- subxero37, on 10/10/2007, -4/+61I run Beryl (haven't upgraded...) on my machine at home, and it uses between 30%-70% of my CPU when doing something intensive; otherwise very little. Vista, on the same machine, constantly eats away 50% or more of my CPU during idle times, and usually much more otherwise. (Athlon 64 3000+, single core, good ol' GeForce 6200)
My machine that I use at school (college) is an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (dual core) with a GeForce 7300, but Beryl, hands down, refuses to use more than 5-10% of my CPUs. Vista, on the same machine (a friend of mine runs it; all of our computers are identical) constantly eats even more CPU usage than on a single core, with the average being between 60% to 80% (50% being one core is at 100%) (this is a rough guess, I haven't actually done the math, but I've examined the usage graphs.)
What the hell am I missing here? How can Microsoft completely fail to pull this off? Beryl's effects are far beyond what the windowing engine in Windows is capable of, and take up fractions of the processing power required under Windows.
This is where Linux shines, and where open-source software is absolutely amazing. - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -5/+59They are moving fast. It seems like only a month or two ago they released another stable version.
Free software is fast. - SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -8/+39Fast? In the time it took the Apple developers to develop the whole new upgrade to OS X I banged your mom 637 times.
- screwattackthis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30The cube plugin was not rewritten. The 3D windows plugin was.
- tonycomputerguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29Or not. It's nothing like Vista and doesn't have the insane / stupid requirements, yet manages to look and run 50x better/faster. If anything you MIGHT need a new video card, but my Geforce 3 actually ALMOST runs it, so I doubt you need anything too outrageous. Sucker your buddies into upgrading to vista, then snag their old equipment and laugh at how your compiz+fusion box looks cooler and runs faster than theirs. Just dual boot into XP if ya gotta play games. Vista is quite possibly WORSE than Millennium edition, a feat I thought impossible until I tried to get some pre-2005 games running on vista earlier today. What a joke... I swear I've had more luck with WINE than Vista when it comes to older games.
Whoops, Sorry, Off topic there, but 4 hours of dealing with an absolutely retarded O/S has that effect on me. - shinynew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27It would be nice if window managers started being run completely on graphic cards, no extra CPU cycles and as much eye candy as you want.
- chess10, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25I have Compiz running on my Dell under Ubuntu. It is sick! I love the cube effect!
- lonniebiz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Young folks today use "sick" to mean "exceedingly stylish" or "surprisingly spectacular". I learned this by watching an episode of "Pimp My Ride".
- RichPowers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Gutsy Gibbon will feature the latest version of Compiz Fusion, correct?
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22In the time Apple took to release an upgrade. Linux had about 10 releases. Wine had about 50.
- evilgod69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17gutsy currently has compiz fusion core 6.0+git & 5.2+git for the plugins. (which is the latest :p)
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Why's he getting dugg down? He's just presenting his experience... someone pissed that he's not supporting your side? BAW. (Also notice he concedes poorer performance at times with linux, it seems like he's trying to give an honest assessment here...)
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Are you dumb or are you stupid?
How many people work on Vista or OS X and compared how many people worked on Compiz. Plus they don't work on this fulltime. So please don't be a dick.
> Open source is not the silver bullet for every programming problem.
Open source is not a design pattern so I have no ***** idea what you mean by programming problem. Do you even know what programming problem is? - screwattackthis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16It's "nearing stable." Read closer.
And hell, Compiz is pretty damn stable. - mcmlxxii, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Meh mac develop entirely for their own platform. I'd like to see how long it would take them to rewrite OS X to suit any hardware configuration.
- mvent2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Gutsy will use the latest Compiz that was released before the freeze. I can't remember what version that is.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Yes, but since WINE isn't stable you can hardly blame Compiz for that.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12We release often in the OSS world. It allows us to get feedback quickly and keeps us close to the user.
- tonycomputerguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Yup, I run Beryl on my 7 or 8 year old AMD 1.4 ghz with a friggin Geforce 3. It runs WAAAAY faster than my old man's new 4400+ x64 with Geforce 8300! Anyway, I'll prolly have to stick with Beryl as my old Gforce 3 doesn't play well with compiz, but that's just fine with me. ***** vista. ***** it right in the ear.
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I suppose it's because you can't delete posts.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12more like pretty boxes.over quantity
- gmhafiz, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16You mean it is slick, not sick.
- taurustiger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Damn, you sure read a lot into that statement! Perhaps he just meant that he is happy to try this software out on a new PC...
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Yea like safari release on Windows right?
- Vinvin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Dammit, you're right, my bad.
- canthraxp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9*Apple dudes* Let's add some new icons and call it a new release.
- spikelee33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I'm running Gutsy now and it's good to see that almost every feature of the unstable repositories that I used in Feisty have made it into the repositories of Gutsy. Here's how I set it up in Feisty BTW: http://kevin.vanzonneveld.net/techblog/article/ena ...
- chedabob, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11System Idle Process has always done that.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7why the hell are everyone posting periods?!?! That's like the 20th one i've seen this week...
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7There is an easy fix for that, don't use compiz when your on battery power. There is a setting that will turn off compiz and go to metacity when your laptop isn't plugged in.
Using this method you get all the fun of compiz when your at home/work or anywhere with power. You also get the maximum battery life for your computer by using metacity when on battery. If you are on battery and want to show a friend compiz, then you can turn it on again. - Vinvin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Let's post comma's instead :P
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I'm pretty sure most problems are from the video drivers rather than Compiz itself (yes, some of these drivers are open, but they're mostly pretty new which excuses some instability *for the time being*.)
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9So Apple developers made Leopard in 637 minutes?
- colinm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Just a warning: When I tried the new "simple settings" app (simple-ccsm) it overwrote all my settings with one of its defaults. :(
If you click Preferences in the normal settings manager, you can export your settings as a backup. - narlzac85, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7wrong.
System idle process represents all of your processing power thats not in use by other processes...ITS NOT REALLY DOING ANYTHING. For example: You have 40 or 50 processes using 10% cpu time, System Idle Process will then be using 90%. - lazarith, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6What does a boot loader have to do with where you go to eat? (sorry, couldn't resist)
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6gotta love .deb files.
Download from getdeb.com

Done - cabazorro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I can't get emerald to work with compiz on FC7. I get no borders in the windows. The main problem with the a smogaboard of options is that when combined you can't tell when things crapped-out or why. It needs some sort of reverse-history button.
- erlkonig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I want DOCUMENTATION! Manual pages for man(1)! Something with actual meat in it docwise that gets distributed with the packages with compiz, Xgl, etc., so we can actually write stuff for it sitting on a 3d-supporting laptop in a cafe we chose for grub, rather than net access.
Literate coding rules - just bury the per-function docs in with the code and it's much easier to keep than in sync. The function docs are often half the battle right there. - Xenogis, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9That's all fine and dandy but when do we get antialiasing so compiz doesn't look so *****?
- zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I've never ever had a problem like those. In fact, Compiz has made most of my WINE apps better.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5the beta is using 0.6 default
- DeusMachina, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9That is quite interesting subxero37, I am dual booting Gentoo and Vista Business on my 1 year old laptop (Core Duo T2500 @ 2GHz, 2GB RAM, Intel GMA950 graphics) and I haven't noticed that big a performance hit on my computer. I am running Beryl on the Gentoo install, and Aero on the Vista install.
When doing something intensive e.g. compiling Firefox in Gentoo or running Matlab simulations in Vista, what I have noticed is that the UI tends to become more unresponsive in Beryl than in Vista. For example, while Firefox is compiling one core will go to ~90% usage and during this time, suppose I open up Amarok or even OO writer, both cores will shoot up to 100% usage and the second program will take much longer to launch than without beryl running. On the other hand, under Vista the Matlab simulation will utilize both cores to a degree (40%-60% each core), from what I can see in the usage graphs another 10%-15% is used by other Vista "services". Each simulation takes something like 8 mins to run, but if I were to open up MS Word or Firefox, the delay in opening either application isn't as noticeable.
Granted, compiling Firefox and running Matlab simulations may not be in the same league, but that hit still exists under Beryl. For this reason I dont run beryl when doing large compiles, hopefully compiz-fusion can fix this. - mtekk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There is a way to set portage to only use one core on a multi-core machine, and there is also a way to tell it to be "gentler" on the system so you can work while compiling.
- mishaco, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6i wish my car ran on water and my bank account accepted walnuts , but as much as eye candy as you can get with beryl / compiz is better than what you get in vista . no question about it and is competitive vs. osx . id say linux is a player in the " looks good , feels good " game . its the double click on ( an executable ) setup file to make it go that the average user wants that is holding it back .
- Vinvin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4And so everybody has his or her own wishes...
(Just as I have tons of things I want Windows/OS X/<insert OS here> to do which they don't.) - ShogunWarPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Metisse=lame
- Camphlobactor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=sic ...
- Vinvin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I guess he mostly means that the fact that software is free doesn't mean it will be developed quickly per se... But yeah, whatever :P
- nullity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That is more or less exactly what Compiz does, if you have a decent nVidia graphics card, and the proprietary driver installed.
