- nights0223, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29Why not just go to the contest, with all the entries. There are some much better ones there, IMO:
http://forums.opencompositing.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=835 - stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18I have to say, very classy and well-done. Definitely does not look like the typical icons you see in Linux (or anywhere, really).
Note to developers: please, have an artist make the icon for you. - maci01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Because its 54 pages long.
- ptFoe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9The problem is that even if they had a contest at the end the Winner would be an inside developer. Just like the what happened with the naming of "Compiz Fusion".
- openartist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Wow, I just got back from NYC after no email for 2 days and my friend IMs me that I got dugg (I have no clue who did it). A nice surprise. : ) Thanks everyone for your kind comments and thoughtful critiques. What you see was only my second version of the logo, and actually I've felt that I was able to take my icon/design ability to a whole new level in later editions. I found out about the contest only after I had posted the design on beryl-themes.org and someone emailed me about it. You can see some of the other "final" designs that I submitted at:

To answer some people's questions and concerns, yeah, when scaling these babies they need to be tweaked of course, but when you're designing "spec" and don't even know if your design will win you don't feel the impulse to make it "perfect" until after you know you've won. From a designer's perspective (a pro one anyway) to do work like this costs us more than people sometimes realize and appreciate (just sayin'). The fonts are rather peculiar I agree, I was trying to work with what Compiz had already settled on without proposing that we change the font face.
Fundamentally I want to get around to writing a bit for how FOSS projects should actually conduct such "contests" and create relationships with the design community
If you actually go to my site at openartist.net, pardon the mess, it's like having unexpected guests over when your living room is messy...humbling. I work for a magazine so I don't have all that much motive to improve upon it given my time at the moment.
Cheers! - DesignerScott, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Good icon. Bad Typography. Would reproduce horribly outside of web media. Design should be well thought out first, not just thrown together.
- Beelzebub, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Cool, Firefox extensions are submitting stories to Digg now.
- deadlikeoscar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yeah and if you ask me the name kind of contradicts itself. They say it is a fusion of the the two projects, so why does Compiz get to keep their name on it? They could have just named it Fusion and been done with it.
- trylleklovn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Wow. I'm sorry to say it, but some of those entries are just sad.
- orangester, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Not to be out of the loop or anything, but what's the logo for?
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Whoah! I really like this icon, and I haven't seen anything better in the contest forum. I really hope this is the one that ends up being the official logo!
- Mejogid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5This guy made it in his free time, and IMO it's better than a lot of corporate design work out there. If you feel there's something wrong with it, spend some time nocking it up if you can be bothered or atleast try to contact the artists and point this out. An isolated digg comment helps noone.
- srg13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's a bit of a generalisation, and not a really correct one at that - There are very good icon sets available (like Tango)
- stephenwq, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4No, the contest thread has been locked, the deadline is over. All entries are in.
- Four20, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3looks like a modified version of the e107 logo
- xst4t1kx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I like the look of the cube and I like the look of the text, I just don't care much for how they work together.
- trevorb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Exactly. great icon... terrible logo
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I agree with you there, although I think you misunderstood me. Tango is awesome, but it's an icon set. I was talking about icons for specific applications. For example, until recently the icon for Glade was a burning globe.
- isayx3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Looks nice on screen, but a logo needs to scale well...it should look good in b/w, when its faxed, if its stitched on a shirt ect. You can make a simplified version, but then it would look like a plain cube which im sure is a lot of peoples logo bug.
- mahler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually, this logo was already submitted by 'openartist'
http://forums.opencompositing.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=835&start=350#p7651
I'm not sure if this is the same guy who posted the Digg-topic though.
For other users who want to give feedback on this logo,
it might be smart to read that topic, because alot has already been said. - kevincannon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Normally, you'd tweak the 16x16 icons by hand. The example there was just a quick demo downscaling, so it's not quite a true reflection of what the icon would look like.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The 16x16 looks pretty bad in my opinion. Love the cube and colors and all, but it does not do well for a small icon.
- forteller, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Compiz Fusion:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wfKc9ze77NA - kevincannon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The problem is with logo competitions. It's not really the best way to do design work. Design work is usually iterative, that starts with a working with a client to create a brief, and working with them to create an image and refine it through a process. A design contest is guesswork.
The open source community would be much better served with engaging designers in a way that works best. Design contests aren't endorsed by most professional designers, and some design bodies do not allow entry into them for members.
Giving a commitment to use a designer's skills for free and engage in the process would result in much higher quality design within the open source community. - LawrenceDudley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Look at the meta data. The image was produced using Adobe Photoshop CS3 on a Mac.
Says a lot about the state of linux... It's icons are produced on a competing OS.
/troll - nuiman, on 10/26/2007, -1/+2I love it! :) I think this can be simplified down some for the "scalable" version.. but this is an amazing design.. very good use of colors
- Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1some of these look REALLY nice. What ever we end up with is going to be awesome. I quite liked the purple sphere with the spinning lines but I think a cube is somehow significant.
I think people should definetly give up the "arrows" and Beryl significance here. It's now compiz fusion. stop trying to distinguish them or signify the merge. - tetsura, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i wish i could be bothered to go through all 54 pages, there are some amazing designs there though
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Great stuff, man. I hope to see you more around the Linux art community. :)
- Sal4, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1openartist: Just wanted to say, the logo is excellent. It looks extremely professional. Your other attempts are very good as well. You're an excellent designer! If Linux had more people like you it could just end up being seriously beautified.
- openartist, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1(feel free to mirror these as my site may go down, I'm off to bed though [it's 2am])
- openartist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Hey kevincannon, I'm the designer of this logo and I've worked on several other opensource logo projects and I actually agree with you completely. Nonetheless, I try to help in the way that I can, which is more painful than developers or amateurs are aware of because of the points you brought up. The design process isn't entirely understood or respected often times, and are in fact depreciated by "do-it-yourself" web 2.0 logo flash widgets. Another note to mention, which may sound snobish but isn't, is that contests aren't all bad, as long as they are within your peer group being jedged by people whose opinion you respect, but often these contest are judged by people that don't have all that much "eye" nor a complete understanding of what makes a good logo (which is only part of the larger brand experience that the designer creates).
- kevincannon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1There are some very good icon sets for Linux, but they're the exception, rather than the norm.
- maruchan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I like the logo, but I think the "compiz" text is much more attractive than the "fusion" text. I'd swap those fonts so fusion, the big one, looks a little more stylish and balances out the equally-stylish graphic. :-) Nice work!
- canthraxp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Very nice, but the font of "Compiz" has some serifed-like edges. And I think the logo should be 100% vectorial, for rescaling.
- MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I say we go with a Ruby.Compiz gets the name, Beryl gets the logo.
- SHuisman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1If it ain't a vector image i think it's rubbish...
- orukabir, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3So, can i do a drawing of my grandma and post it on digg for comments too?
- hbweb500, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Very nice. I didn't like the one's with the arrows merging because those show the history behind the two WM's merging. A new Linux user doesn't know or care about how there were two different entities, so that idea doesnt make sense to me. This one seems to show more about what the app does than its history (the logo is an explosion of awesomeness, which pretty much sums up compiz).
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1That's a beautiful one, but isn't there already an official logo? There are other attempts, e.g.:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/trevi55/578728156/
http://wordpress.com/tag/compiz-fusion/ - CDHarrisUSF, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3An entry in an ongoing contest to pick a new logo for an unfinished/unstable project... and it makes the front page? Really? Is it a slow news day?
