- wolf08, on 10/11/2007, -7/+41An hour! Can't we just make .debs and be done with it?
- Mejogid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21If you actually clicked that there link before complaining, you'd see its actually 10 commands to remove the old compiz debs and install the compiz-fusion ones. If you have a decent connection we're talking 10 minutes, so I have no idea where the author pulled that figure from.
- bieber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Does it matter? A feature is a feature, who honestly gives a ***** whether it's the first ever implementation of it in any OS ever? Can we please try to avoid hitting the Microsoft vs. Apple vs. Xerox PARC debate?
Also, given that most of what Compiz is famous for, desktop cube and etc., won't be found in OSX, it'd be kind of hard to call it a ripoff, wouldn't it? - weijie90, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15I'm really impressed by Compiz Fusion. As a Beryl 0.2.0 user, I find it much cooler. I really like the Expose plugin.
I have a question: would you consider the features in Compiz Fusion truly innovative, or just ripoffs from OSX? Please share your views, thanks! - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12I was waiting for someone to write a HOWTO for CF but I have 2 questions:
1) It has the remove compiz line but if I am using Beryl do I simply swap beryl/compiz or is there something else I have to do?
2) Just how stable is this? In all the time I've used Compiz and Beryl I've never had any problems but is there anything unstable/buggy about Compiz Fusion? - smurf22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9@weijie90
I dont think they are riping them off, they have made plenty of their own things, and apple is now coming out with "spaces" which sounds like something else. So we get something from them, they get something from us. - tylerjames, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Want to get the new Compiz Fusion effects or don't know what it is but still want it? Got Ubuntu 7.04 and a hour free?
Got an ATI video card?
Well too bad, because you're *****! - Fireblend, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yup, NTFS support shouldn't be one of your concerns; it works flawlessly.
- PatrickBrown, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Buried for inaccurate. This will not take an hour. This will not even take 10 minutes.
- InvisibleKid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6well probably you would like to remove the old beryl because you wont be using it any more, you can do it with
sudo apt-get remove beryl - JerMe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Trevino's original instructions from OpenCompositing.org:
http://forums.opencompositing.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=131
You'll probably get better support from there. - SpoBo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9The second video in the tutorial is absolutely MINDBLOWING! I suddenly feel like uninstalling OS X lol :) If the install is painless and NTFS is read/write supported in the next final Ubuntu release I'm installing. Most definitely!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The instructions seem easy enough, but my beryl is actually working decent for the first time since the latest nvidia driver. So i'm scared to make any changes to it really, i think i might weight for the final version
- jacobmp92, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Another idea - not that anyone will even see this - is to use Gutsy (Ubuntu 7.10), which has Fusion preinstalled.
Not that I would recommend upgrading to Gutsy just for Fusion though - it's a bit..... unstable. - opencoder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Idea exchange helps further innovation. The more you push ideas around, the more developers get to work with the features. And the more people that work with a feature, the more people can improve upon it. Or come up with a new idea entirely which is worlds better than the original.
- Fireblend, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You dn't have to remove anything, just follow the how-to!
- luciferin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Probably because you're running x64 and need 64-bit packages. As far as I know there is no release for it yet.
- stiankarlsen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3An hour? To follow that guide? Did it in a few minutes... for gods sake, it's just cutting and pasting a couple of lines, and its a done deal.
Also, fusion is amazing.
im out - superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3well apple took the virtual desktop idea from the linux community in the first place. I personally don't mind people borrowing ideas form each other and improving on it, thats part of the opensource ideology anyway. But yeah, the expo plugin is similiar to the expose feature in OSX, and so are the reflections.
If someone has a good idea, use it! They're all doing it, its only a matter of time before windows gets some sort of official virtual desktop capability. - superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3first there was compiz, then some people that worked on it split off and started beryl, it had more features but was slightly less stable, now they're getting back together. So far the result seems to be more features and more stability, and it will be the default window manager in the next release in ubuntu.... soooo yes and no
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Although your comment will be buried (for a good reason), proly nobody will read my comment. But...
Heh, when you get a rotating cube, and all those animations on you OS X... call me. - gr3yn3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3how many people can say "NTFS RW works" without reading *ANY of the above replies...
Seriously, it's been said 5x now. - speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wouldn't it be appropriate to assume sudo apt-get install compiz-decorator would help you there?
- luciferin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Fusion is running more stable than Beryl was for me. It's more responsive too, there are just a few missing features (nothing significant anymore) and a few changes to get used to.
- michnaugh1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think it's a good question. As an OS X user (and Feisty user w/ Fusion installed), I think some aspects of Fusion look and act like how I hoped Spaces for Leopard would be. It is very elegant, has the reflective ebony look, and is hot-key-able. I find it stable-ish. I haven't had any big problems, but notice that Avant seems a little wonky some times. No big complaints so far, though.
- superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2me too, more stable than beryl for me, even though i'm using xgl. But there are some features missing, like cube transparency, turning off cubecaps, theres no obvious way to use emerald themes, cant figure out how to turn on drop shadows, etc.
It works very well, when its more complete it will be a real step forward. - specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well, it's not even alpha yet... Just get 7.04 or wait till (erm...) October?
- kazaru, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3NTFS r/w support is included in the current release
- gr3yn3t, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1you in feisty?
- KungFuJesus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You need to use XGL as the compositing extension rather than AIGLX/NVIDIA due to crappy ATi linux drivers
- LegendarySock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It runs much smoother in some aspects, especially the scale plugin. The expose feature is beautiful. However, there are some problems that need to be sorted out before a final release. The cube seems to lag at times (with reflection turned on), there is no widget plugin (fantastic with screenlets), they removed the 3D window feature (in cube mode), and the wobbly windows are really screwey. Hopefull it will be sorted out soon. Also, splash doesn't work unless JPEG plugin is enabled... probably should be by default.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1.debs? where?
*don't mind... I'll never find this post again. - speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I installed it in about *5* minutes on my dell laptop with crappy integrated intel graphics card. It runs and installs fine, but it seems sluggish compared to beryl. Hopefully some tweaking will get it working nicer.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Its really just trial and error, back up your xorg.conf and try again =) thats what i do, i keep my xorg.conf backup on my pc, and my jumpdrive. Same with my samba config
- digitalarcanum, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Tell you what: When Old Steve Let's me choose what part I want to put in my computer and build it myself and instead of apple handing me a cookie cutter computer and me being told to be happy with it is the day I'll switch to OSX. Apple's hardware quality isn't that much better so does it really matter?
- Cbeck527, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i think the wait of this decision is too much to risk ;)
- leszek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2hmm there is already read/write support for ntfs partition on Ubuntu.
more information here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MountingWindowsPartitions - superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3ntfs already mounts effortlessly
- hackerssidekick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The thing is that only registered and logged in users can see attachments.
- superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1sorry, i don't know the solution. I used to get that message with the compiz whereas beryl worked, so I was surprised when fusion started without a problem. I would try purging it and starting over, make sure the old compiz is removed completely. I used this how-to, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=481615
- krazymelvin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Damn man, beryl used to work for me, but for some reason compiz won't. I keep getting this error:
Fatal: Failed test: texture_from_pixmap support
Checks indicate that it's impossible to start compiz on your system.
Anyone know how I can fix this? - darwin81, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1*head explodes*
- superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1ooooooh I see, yeah I forgot about that, sorry. well I think i rectified that
- munikho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Guess you're having an 64 bit....
- superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1same session that you used to use with beryl?
- Mejogid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2WTF? Since when did Apple invent reflections.
--
Not much point writing that, since noone will ever see it. - tmahmood, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Couldn't even install it in my machine. sudo apt-get install compiz says unmet dependency: compiz-decorator
- priegog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1All I want to say is, these kind of comments have to be some kind of indication of how far the Linux desktop has come, and of how ready it is for the "normal" user.... (hey even for mac people! j/k :) )
- krazymelvin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yup, in-fact I am running beryl right now (just for testing purposes, since you asked, but I uninstalled it before I installed compiz-fusion)
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Okay, it was just the apt-get remove compiz part that had me worried, I'll try it out soon.
Thanks. :) -
