- luvdownbabylon, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7isn't ip rather agnostic to which operating system a host runs? i can see comcast mucking with types of streams and pissing people off with their qos decisions, but i don't see them discriminating based on the connected host os. they probably _use_ linux in their infrastructure. if they are a cisco shop, then isn't ios basically a linux derivative? i think this guy may be getting a bs line from comcast and they probably just want to scapegoat anything they can rather than spend time or money figuring it out for him. oh so typical. even when they have an internally known network outage (I remember when a link between two local cities was severed), they are reluctant to admit it. because when they do fess then several savvy users (such as myself) will demand credit back on our fees for the down-time. (i'm a 24/7 user).
dude should do some basic troubleshooting. if he feels it may be linux discrimination, then beg, borrow, buy, or download and "evaluate" a copy of windows and see if it makes a damned difference. don't get me wrong, i am an ubuntu user and strong linux advocate. but this guy is off his rocker crying chicken little without a little solid evidence to back it up. he wants to collect data from all these comast customers who use linux and especially ubuntu. but he hasn't tested the difference the OS makes on his own connection, where the problem is manifest, first. c'mon buddy. you're being just as quick to find a scapegoat as comcast is. i mean, sure, it is probably something that is comcast's responsibility. perhaps a poor connection in the head unit, or a bad wire, or an open wire off a splitter, or a bad or inappropriate splitter, who knows. but it is rash to go around insinuating that they discriminate at the os level on qos. where something can be found and shown to be likely if not proven, then it is appropriate to start raising questions. this guy doesn't seem very level headed.
mojo - Falldog, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5Comcast employees have a big wheel of nouns that they spin around whenever they need to identify a problem.
- Vadi0, on 08/15/2008, -1/+6Thanks, but I actually just uninstalled the $300 OS because a $0 one beats it's ass.
- TheWindBlows, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Aren't Wired Internet Speeds faster in Linux than they are in Windows? Or at least thats the way it works out for most people.
- dirtman777, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3Charter is also sometimes guilty of the same thing. Blaming Linux for problems with the internet. The fun thing was the last time Charter did that, their whole statewide system was down from a severe thunderstorm.
- mikelieman, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Simpler.
Get a linksys gateway/firewall/router. Plug that it. It should DHCP itself off comcast and present a private IP range for the inside LAN.
Then tell them you have an XP Pro box inside it. - Andytom, on 08/15/2008, -1/+1Just install a different distro that should fix it. Or is this one of those thing that applies to all Linux distros but the submitter only know about ubuntu?
- gsiliceo, on 08/15/2008, -2/+1Remember guys, there is no bad publicity.
- LordSnootington, on 08/15/2008, -4/+1Install Windows ya freeloading bums!
- oomfoofoo, on 08/15/2008, -10/+1Another fanboy crying and blaming others for their inability to run their hardware & software correctly. Buried as lame.
