- mwiriadi, on 11/10/2007, -1/+5It gives you the choice of doing things legitimately or not that is your choice. Can you download codecs elsewhere yes. The situation is that Fedora is doing the right thing.
- rahulsundaram, on 11/05/2007, -1/+4You have no idea what you are talking about. What is upstream is from Red Hat. Take a look at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RedHatContributions
- Dankoozy, on 11/03/2007, -2/+3If its any bit like bonzai buddy i'm switching to Debian or Gentoo
- t3st3r, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1Phew, on screen shot I see option only to buy certain codecs without free download in case local law allows this. Let's admit: in my country stupid US software patents are NOTHING so it is 100% legal to use FREE codecs implementations. Does Fedora ignores that there is no stupid patents in Europe, Russia, etc?Who will recieve these moneys and for what, then?? Well, we can ignore Fedora then and stick to more user-friendly options :P
- Philluminati, on 11/03/2007, -1/+2Why are there prices against them? I haven't met a file that VLC can't play yet so I consider it the best solution. The only faff with current system is MP3 if you ask me
- rahulsundaram, on 11/08/2007, -2/+3The all or nothing question is not a good idea. You don't want to be procuring codecs unnecessarily. People should be able to cherry pick support for what they want instead. They are only prompted for a codec if they try to play content in that codec so they wouldn't be confused when the dialog box pops up.
It might not be legal for a distribution based on U.S and bound by U.S laws to point to another repository which is not the case for Ubuntu. So the situation is far from the same. Still this question is already with the Red Hat Legal team and they are looking into this. If it can be done, it will be. - Vaeduus, on 11/03/2007, -0/+1Livna ftw.
- mwiriadi, on 11/03/2007, -1/+2Ubuntu has a lot more of Red Hat contributions than Ubuntu themselves. Get your facts straight before you go off half cocked.
- rahulsundaram, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1It exactly means Fedora is innovative because a lot of other features developed by Fedora is being adopted by other distributions. Try and look at how many enhancements from other distributions you mention has made it into various upstream projects. Otherwise you have a odd sense of innovation.,
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -0/+1So? That doesn't mean that Fedora is innovative. I'm not saying its a bad distro but the innovative department belongs ubuntu and mandriva right now.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -3/+3Still not so suitable for new users that [quite often] have no idea of what MPEG or MMS means. A Box with a question: Do you want to enable all multimedia capabilities? [Yes] - [No] - [Help] would be better.
"Can you speculate about the possibility that Fedora might be able to link to the RPMFusion repository for future releases?
T: I would doubt that they would legally be able to. But I think that's beside the point."
It's legal in my country, legal in Europe, part of Asia and Africa, so why the hell don't you just do what Ubuntu has done? [successfully, by the way] - inactive, on 11/03/2007, -0/+0ARCH!:-D
- LanEvo, on 11/03/2007, -1/+1btw, pacman -S codecs
- abujbr, on 08/15/2008, -0/+0thanks for posting
http://www.dl3m.com/ - schestowitz, on 11/03/2007, -3/+3That's excellent stuff. This ought to stop Freedom-apathetic critic from hailing just Ubuntu like it was the Second Coming. Fedora remains one of the most innovative distributions... and it actually respects freedom.

- inactive, on 11/05/2007, -2/+1Are you serious? You actually hate Ubuntu now as well? Isn't Novell and everyone else enough for you?
- LanEvo, on 11/03/2007, -4/+2i'm not paying for ***** other OS's get for free.
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -3/+1Fedora innovative? Have you ever even installed it? Its a default Gnome desktops with NO TWEAKS thrown in there. The innovatives distros at this time are Ubuntu, Mandriva and Suse (hate to say it but credit where is due). Now that ubuntu is taking the big chunk of the Linux market share maybe they will start to innovate.
