- razorxpress, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5No. OSs like Google GOS, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu are all different names but they are all Ubuntu with some packages added. Now to a more broader approach. Fedora, Ubuntu, Mandriva are all different distro but are single Linux. They all use Gnome or Kde. They all have Linux Kernel 2.6, network manager 0.7, Gnome 2.24 and little variation on ease of use to the user. Many prefer one way(Red Hat) and many the other way(Ubuntu). A developer never things he is developing his application for Ubuntu or Mandriva. He/she has to concentrate on which library to use. They all are practising on how their customers(users) prefer the os. So how come a Linux which have a particular theme or some way of easiness to different users be different. If you say Windows Media Player has one more button to pause than the previous one which was on the play button as toogle different then they all are quite different. The answer to so, many distros these days, im lost as to which one to pick is we have 100s of distro(variation for users) choose one which is your kind

Huh....? gOS is not affiliated with Google, whatsoever.
'Google, Google Icons, and the Google Logo are trademarks of Google Inc. gOS is not affiliated with Google or their partners.'
'A developer never thinks he is developing his application for Ubuntu or Mandriva.'
Try telling that to the Unbuntu dev who made Totem plugin with apt code ;) It honestly depends on the developer... but if they're a good dev, they won't code it for a specific distro/package manager. - razorxpress, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Ok, just forget the GoS part. Now friends Ok. If ubuntu did some selfish packaging also. BBC is not that good to be considered on Totem. Flash player is far better than that. I previously used fedora a lot from 3 to 8 and hated Ubuntu considering a totally different one. Later figured out they are the same and what you can do on Fedora you can do it on ubuntu. These differences like bbc plugin etc are just minor. If fedora really wants those bbc plugin from ubuntu developers i think they will be more than happy to program it for fedora too. I don't think open source or any developer just tries to be more smarter by not showing what hi did or how he did the work. These developers are more closer that what we think they are very different. They are just like two friends who ask each other how to proceed to do certain stuffs. If ubuntu tries to hide or not help fedora guys they will ultimately loose because fedora developers contribute very much on things like kernel and different packages like network manager etc. Ubuntu dev tries to make the installation very easy, make small size(installation media), shipt for free and cover more general user through their vast forums.
- razorxpress, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Google Gos was a broader name to support varients of same Ubuntu 8.04. I did not ment GoS of Google anyway. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810ov ... does not say anything about the apt code. Since when did any one started writing codes on apt or rpm. I think they are mere packagers to support certain installation style. And for the bbc plugin if fedora or other does not include it does not mean they can't be included on them. If ubuntu developers develop it fedora can use them without any restrictions. And why i am saying this is one of Ubuntu's main ( i mean very main) Upstream is fedora. So stop playing this Ubuntu and Fedora game with me they are all the same. Again i say the same. They all collect the packages like Linux kernel(Same), Gnome(Same), Kde(Same), and almost all and just do packaging and write small codes for very small things like menus(What should go on accessories and stuffs like that). They all gather and write or choose some theme and then distribute

Here is the link concerning the BBC plugin that got upstreamed to Gnome.

Anyone can change the code to make it work for different distros... but from the looks of it, the Ubuntu devs didn't use a standard such as PackageKit, so it's a lot harder to make work for another distro, although certianly possible since its open.
Totally agree with you that for the most part, all distros are the same at the core since they use the same packages, just different configurations of them with some distro-specifc packages as well, but not too many.

What does Google have to do with anything regarding Ubuntu or variants? - bdsams, on 11/07/2008, -3/+1Agreed, so many distros these days, im lost as to which one to pick
