- daftman, on 10/17/2007, -0/+11Instead of having 293847340 different type of cars, there should be just one to fully compete against walking. You see that big fat hole in your logic?
- fuckinhell, on 10/17/2007, -0/+8Jack of all trades, master of none? Like Windows?
Right now we have distros which are more specialized which lets them do certian things and do them well. I think it is better this way. - tpink, on 10/17/2007, -0/+7I've had Ubuntu running server roles for over two years and it's never been any more "unstable" than Debian.
- spikeb, on 10/17/2007, -4/+7i'm surprised the server push hasn't worsened relations with debian, since that is definitely debian territory
- B52doc, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Having a lot of different choices in Linux distros is its greatest strength and weakness. It will never be consolidated into one OS and thats why it will never truly be mainstream.
- Myztry, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2LOL. We're all just Arrogant Windows users that have moved up to Arrogant Ubuntu users. Behold the coming wave...
- Stemp, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2You do understand the concept of choice ? right ?
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2Are you serious? There is already RHEL for a "proper, sustainable Linux powerhouse for the enterprise..."
- Chicken001, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2I love ***** like you. I remember that years back, Linux users wanted a distro to get people from Windows to switch over. Now this has happened, are you (as in the general public) ever pleased?
- Kyouto, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3Well played.
- alexvalentine, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3I enjoy ubuntu on the desktop, but I will stick with debian on the server. Ubuntu has only disadvantages on the server compared to Debian. Plus, HP offers commercial support for Debian.
- loconet, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2Dammit Canonical, stick with what you know and are good at. Stick with the desktop! I hope they don't turn around and give us all the finger when they see the "greener" world of servers. Don't become another Redhat please!!
- andywebb95, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Competition and sharing among distributions is Linux's greatest asset.
I personally love having specialized builds. - andywebb95, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1For me personally I love Ubuntu on the desktop but I don't really prefer it as a server distro yet,
If I had to choose between a better desktop build or a better server build I would say please focus on the desktop build. Your doing great there keep up the good work :)
Fedora/Redhat has been my choice for server distro mainly because of the excellent character cell tools (ie setup) that they provide.
Coupled with Webmin Fedora is a pretty powerful choice.
Now that being said I do appreciate the fact that the server build of Ubuntu is on a CD (vs a DVD for Fedora) and it assumes that you don't want to run X on the server (which I dont) as well as allowing you to setup LAMP at setup time....... so if they can continue to improve this I may take a second look at it. - Myztry, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Community knowledge. Not only is so much much easier to find Ubuntu related information, but more and more individuals understand, and have experience with Ubuntu. Not just techs, but the guy next door kind of thing.
- Morm, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1I'm using Ubuntu Dapper on several servers including one of our mail servers - which easily outperforms the W2K server box it replaced. I'm really happy with it and will move to Hardy Heron LTS once it is released.
- Myztry, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Pure Debian can be considered a specialist distribution. Ubuntu is the mass market distribution, unspecialized.
At the very least, the for the masses of Ubuntu is going to do wonders for hardware support which helps all distributions. - Phocion55, on 10/17/2007, -5/+5Cue the Linux naysayers in 3..............
- schestowitz, on 10/17/2007, -4/+4It's all nice, but other than the name, what reasons does one have for choosing Ubuntu over Debian Stable? Maybe support? H-P already uses Debian happily, but it's on its own.
- inactive, on 10/16/2007, -1/+1My sentiments exactly.
- RandaII, on 10/18/2007, -2/+1I never wanted the arrogant windows users to come over. now its arrogant ubuntu users.
- aberdean, on 10/16/2007, -1/+0It's good if they can keep the two sides of the market in sync... the Ubuntu name really carries a lot of weight, but I know purchasers don't want to invest in two different brands of Linux at once... this could help create a proper, sustainable Linux powerhouse for the enterprise...
- jdhore1, on 10/16/2007, -5/+2Most Debian users hate Ubuntu for reasons other than Ubuntu trying to take over the server market. Also, most self-respecting admins would realize how Unstable Ubuntu is compared to Debian Stable. Oh, also, if i'm wrong about Debian users hating Ubuntu, why is there a thread about 5 pages long on the Debian forums that's basically all bashing Ubuntu?
For the record, so i don't sound like an anti-linux fanboy, I used Ubuntu for about 6 months and i'm currently a Debian user. So my claims aren't just FUD. - RandaII, on 10/18/2007, -8/+1Ubuntu does not belong in a server room let alone a ***** desktop. Please take the ***** piece of ***** ***** and keep it out of the server room.
- plizard, on 10/17/2007, -10/+2instead of having 32543243243242433 linux flavors, there should just be one ultimate one to fully compete against windows
