- talonstriker, on 06/04/2008, -1/+36It looks better than the normal ubuntu.
- elhoncho, on 06/03/2008, -1/+30Some nicer pics: http://flickr.com/photos/njpatel/tags/netbookremix ...
I'm looking forward to trying this out on a couple of old laptops too, I think it'll work well with their small screen resolutions. - weizbox, on 06/03/2008, -1/+21Anyone know where one would find all the source code for this 'Netbook Remix'? Def would like to check some of it out :)
- climatewarrior, on 06/03/2008, -1/+19It looks gorgeous! I think I'm going to install that in my regular laptop when Intrepid Ibex comes out.
- elhoncho, on 06/04/2008, -0/+13Yeah you can, here's the launchpad project page:
https://launchpad.net/netbook-remix
&
https://launchpad.net/netbook-remix-launcher
It's all open-source to boot! - chanop, on 06/04/2008, -0/+13This + the new dell mini-notebook = win IF mini-notebook + atom processor
- badassninja, on 06/04/2008, -2/+13You're a loser, no one loves you. Oh wait.. that's just to cold. Ok, try this instead. You have no idea what you are talking about, why don't you try linux some time, it's really rather fantastic.
- AzureRise, on 06/04/2008, -0/+10See, it can run on anything! I actually have an old laptop with windows 3.1 and I looked it up and someone actually got Linux on that specific model. Only reason I'm not trying it is that it takes 60 floppies...
- rebelcommander, on 06/04/2008, -1/+10It's about time someone builds a desktop environment specifically for smaller UMPC style computers! Hopefully this sort of development will finally make it easy to work on an 8" display.
- Sammi84, on 06/04/2008, -0/+9So what are the added features other than the new menu?
- TRJW, on 06/04/2008, -2/+10Touchscreen support to this (or Linux in general) and Windows 7 can GTFO!
- oobuntu, on 06/04/2008, -1/+9let's hope it has a super-fast boot time on UMPCs
- MWeather, on 06/04/2008, -0/+7There are touchscreen drivers for Xorg already.
- DreadKnight, on 06/04/2008, -0/+7That Menu is Damn Perfect! Way better than the default one in kde3 and kde4!
It fricking rocks! - armo, on 06/04/2008, -0/+7https://code.launchpad.net/netbook-remix
- rinocom, on 06/04/2008, -0/+6So, in theory, is there any reason to install this on my Asus Eee when 8.04 runs fine? (i understand that it's optimized for small screens; i'm just wondering if I should 'covet' this :) )
- rinocom, on 06/04/2008, -0/+6Sounds reasonable.
It's official.
I covet. - xutopia, on 06/04/2008, -0/+5Pretty sure the stuff is mostly open source and it's something they believe in.
- wigren, on 06/04/2008, -1/+6"haha look what i did guys!" now EVERY ONE WILL SEE MY ANGST!
- GiggleStick, on 06/04/2008, -2/+7What about after it boots? Is that open source too?
- andsalvatierra, on 06/04/2008, -1/+5Why not? It's designed for UMPCs and smaller devices, while 8.04 is geared more toward your standard desktop PC; Notebook Remix takes advantage of Intel's atom processor and should generally work better on devices with such.
Opt for the tailor-fitted option as opposed to an off-the rack piece that may or may not provide the optimal fit and performance for your system, yeah? - will27, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4There is nothing wrong with ordinary desktop Ubuntu on a laptop (in fact the name Ubuntu Desktop seems a bit inaccurate when you consider that) and many people do. Also Dell already package Ubuntu on certain laptop models. However this new version is targeted more at UMPCs, with modifications to make more efficient use of smaller screen space, and to be better suited to lower specs, use of flash storage and other differences between UMPC models and conventional laptops.
It's not dumbed down Linux as such, but a version designed for use in a different environment, certainly of benefit to the spread of Linux. - thelastknowngod, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4it would be awesome if asus decided to go with this instead of the crappy "easy mode" on the eee by default. easy doesnt have to be restrictive. notebook remix looks really cool.
- arjie, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3I like the theme too, and the usual theme is actually also pretty decent. Atleast it was in Gutsy Gibbon.
- Culyt, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3Because a mobile phone is a completely different thing to a subnotebook.
Phone don't have keyboard (or very good ones) and the screen has even less room.
The other thing is the hardware thats supported.
☢ - inactive, on 06/04/2008, -3/+6I was just thinking that. They should remake the regular one to look like this one.
Ubuntu is still by far the ugliest distro. - exomni, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3For me, the #1 priority (by a mile) on a portable device is boot speed. So will someone mention whether or not this boots particularly faster than Desktop Ubuntu?
- DreadKnight, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3I rather like the Ubuntu theme.
I'm a kde user now btw :-) - Biznarie, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3It's not that bad, sure its not real pretty but its easy on the eyes with the earthy colors.
- talonstriker, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3You can customize the theme, big guy.
- plainOldFool, on 06/04/2008, -1/+4English ***** ... DO YOU SPEAK IT
- adila01, on 06/04/2008, -2/+4All the gloss seems very "un-Ubuntu" like, but I don't think they will leave that much gloss in there for the final version.
- armo, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2It's built with clutter. Clutter's all about gloss ;)
- cquilliam, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2This may be a stupid question, but will this run on my Nokia N800 ? If so, I am super-excited.
- dentarthurdent1, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2i wonder about their wireless cards though...
- Culyt, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Well if they are bundling it with subnote books then they would be adding the drivers to it like Asus did with Xandos and the EeePC (or even better giving us opensource ones). Otherwise they can just choose decently supported wifi cards.
☢ - benplaut, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1If this supports Zaurus clamshells, I'll die happy.
- armo, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1If you can't get the bzr to work could you get the sources through apt
https://edge.launchpad.net/~netbook-remix-team/+ar ... - crazybrit, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Do those smileys creep anyone else out?
- exomni, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1@andsalvatierra
Yeah, I understood. But it seems rather crazy to go from close to a minute to just a few seconds. I hope they did it, but the fact that the boot time is not even mentioned in this article is disconcerting. - bdbr, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Wouldn't optimized Moblin include some improved power management (on specific platforms)? This has been a shortcoming of Linux on netbooks.
- wedderburn, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1the guy has a point, it looks like *****, 2 different icons sets ( tango-like and human) and the human ones are fuzzy/out of focus, brown everywhere its ment to be a signature colour not a theme and last a really bad gradiant on the first pic, looks like something smashed it together coloured it brown and called it another ubuntu product.
- lordtyros, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1So... nothing?
- weizbox, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the link :)
Any idea what 'This branch has not been pushed to yet' means? Seems to be the case with the 'main' and 'trunk'. The other ones listed give me a 'Get this branch' where I can get all the files via Bazaar it seems... but not with these two. Are they even needed, or are they there maybe for some organizational reason?
Not too familiar with Bazaar or launchpad, so def would appreciate some more info from someone who know this stuff more :) - jay019, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't mind something like this running on my full size laptop.
- Almightymole, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1This is looking good, perhaps adding a search function in that menu and the menu would be set in my mind.
- nubtard, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1They need to get this released.
- crazybrit, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1I like it. And it's easy to change. Stop complaining.
- crazybrit, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Do those smileys creep anyone else out?
- jay019, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Big things echo loudest.
