- Dankoozy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2computers using more, or less power won't really affect global warming. but it will save a nice bit on electricity
for example my ***** old linux server burns about €9 worth of electricity a month, but if I switched to a compactflash-based Nano-ITX server it won't even use €1. but unfortunately these nano-itx boards are a bit too expensive for me - praveent99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Statistics always sound good. But Is it possible in reality to switch to thin clients? Even they switch what will they do the discarded old Fat systems. They have to end up somewhere. Destroying them would equally contribute to the global warming and pollution. Thin clients would be good for new offices or new purchases. But a better solution would be to embrace working from homes, cutting down on fuel and CO2 emissions. As the creator of Linux itself worked from home for long and may be even now.
- reyalp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2With the proliferation of high-speed internet connectivity for households and businesses, I don't see a reason why a thin-client couldn't be plausible. There's a general shift for many people into using web apps for day to day activities (via Google or etc) that both don't require and are ill-served by an electricity-hogging full PC. If an ISP could integrate this into their systems, it could cut many of the costs of routed traffic and provide another revenue stream for their pockets, while reducing electric bills for their customers and making a positive impact upon the emissions of power plants.
Just how positive of an impact remains to be seen, as uptake is going to be dismal even if offered, and shifting the power consumption to a data center might not be any better in the long run. - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3s/stop global warming/contribute toward the slowing down of/
Let's not go overboard. It's things like vehicles and spurious industrialisation that do the most damage. - keyo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah right! Global warming is about because of big-oil and industry like china. But let's not forgot a lot of us are happy buying chinese made stuff and driving big cars (especially americans). We could all be driving electric cars if the fat ***** of oil didn't own all the battery patents. Hell, the teslar roadster does 0-100km/h (0-60mph for those behind the times) in 4 seconds, nothing wussy about that car.
- Dankoozy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1even locally run apps don't require a ***** of power to run. webb apps aren't really the way forward when it comes to efficiency
they still use an awful lot of power to process the endless layers of HTML abuse, complex and inefficient javascript code that webapps are made with. and if thats not enough, think of the pollution caused by making and laying an extra 5,000 mile cable in the atlantic so people can access their web apps with somewhat reasonable speed - iepurilah, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Yeah, right!
- ToadLeg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Agreed. Come on, I like Linux but saying it will stop global warming is absurd, to the point of mocking the Linux community. How about saying "Is Linux more efficient than Windows" and then give an electricity usage comparison. Try to get people to switch to Linux by saying it does magical things just makes you seem like a nutcase. If you act like you are representing the Linux community, they you make the Linux community appear to be nutcases. Take your extreme exaggeration away from Linux.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Please don't taint Linux with "global warming" hysteria. - http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTI ...
