- hotdiggidity, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Uhm, MythTV?
- cha0sth30ry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'd digg it if it had more details. pics would be nice too. It's just a summary with a lot of missing details.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ummmm thats not a media centre.... its a PC with a media player.
Its like calling a default Windows XP installation a 'Media Centre'
Where is the PVR for starters!!
Crap article, crap post, no digg - Silverjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Article is from January..... Seems like the stoneage to me. Also a pretty bad article IMHO...
If building a so-called "home media center" is just about installing a MP3-player and a mpeg-player, I already have several home media centers at home, besides my Myth-box. - fdemmer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Uhm, Freevo?
- yourowndisaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5same here what gives? people just submitting random ***** nowadays.
- tehsuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not everyone has HD yet there pal!
- lordsnooty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Until your current media centre breaks down and you need to re-install.
- Kirti, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Though I understand articles about the hardware required for Linux Media Machines, I always thought the software setup suggestions was always obvious. I mean, you put something on for music, something for movies, something for editing movies/audio and you're more or less ready to go. Most Linux distros come installed with a majority of the software required (minus some small packages for MP3 support and so on).
I've seen better articles for setting up Linux Media Centers though...
And I really like MPlayer or VLC over Totem, but guess that's a personal choice.

- st0kes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree .. old news, and not a particularly good article either. No digg here.
- jseaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Geez, I think this is the 8th story submitted about the exact same topic in the last 4 months. Not necessary in my opinion, no digg.
- Blazer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That article says he was using the S-Video out. Ught.
- lynchaj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have no problem with Ubuntu as a general purpose Linux distribution but for a media box I think it is overkill. I recommend a lean solution like AMICUS or maybe one of the other MythTV distributions.
http://amicus.sourceforge.net - lyzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wrote this article to help people out.
I know there's 50000000 different ways to do this, but this one worked for me. MythTV wasn't part of the original plan for the project. All I wanted to do was to playback my digital media. This did the job and did it well. If you have another way to do it, please say so in a manner that doesn't diss my project. It works great for what I intended if for.
Most of the comments made here were asked in the Linux.com thread. Please check it out if you have questions as to why I did what I did.
Thanks for the emails from those who appreciated the article. With all the negativity that I've recieved from writing it, it's nice to know that there are others who think otherwise. - paulyche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To quote a response a to a similar(ish) question on the article itself's comment section:
"FWIW I am a Linux BSD and Windows user. I use what I find to be the best tool for the job AND what satisfies my technical itch to learn.
Would you huff and puff to a carpenter how it's a waste of time to learn his craft, and just go to Ikea. Have some appreciation that some folks just UNDERSTAND this geeky stuff better than you, and consider that knowledge a plus.
"
Admitidly this was a reply to a complete troll, but he has a point. Some people like to understand how their setup works AND configure it themselves. - lovedaddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To be honest, I think his whole solution and article was a bit half assed.
1. RT2400 using a wrapper - could have just used rt2x00 kernel module. http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/
2. Why install X? Wouldn't framebuffer console & mplayer via /dev/fb0 have worked?
3. No real benchmarks or any wow factor - if you are going to do a nice media centre, lets at least see some nice 720p x264 vids etc.
I dont see why he bothered, should have just got an xbox with media centre and saved himself a load of bother. - MrMaveric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0People say that the only thing better about a linux media center is the lack of digital rights on the files. But i'm fine with it since i will never watch what i record anywhere other than my projector and media center anyway.
- simpletim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0bunk. complete bunk. and for you windows guys: rock solid? uhhh did you just learn what a computer was? honestly. rock solid?
- kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Yup old news,
Linux is too hard to use, why not just use windows? If you treat her right she'll never crash and your life will be so much happier :-) - hiro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Anyone who actually wants a Linux "Media Centre" has surely already got one.
When you get your head out of your backside and stop playing with your beard, just use one of the Microsoft solutions and you'll never go back to Linux - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Yes, let's keep the intelligent comments coming... /sarcasm
