- qamelian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's not just a desktop distro. There is also a server version with no GUI by default and a kernel optimized for server rather than desktop use.
- colinb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I love LAMP.
- ddthomas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7LAMP means Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, and that's was is installed in this tutorial. Only because the author doesn't use Ubuntu's LAMP installer that doesn't mean it's not a LAMP system. And he says he has good reason to do so because he wants to have full control over what is running on his system which is a good thing on a server. I don't see anything wrong there.
- Kellan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Do you really love the lamp, or are you just saying it because you saw it?
- somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, why don't you write a step by step installation guide for every single Linux distro?
Or stfu. - zixxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hey, was that a anchorman reference?
- qamelian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Except for LTS releases, all Ubuntu releases are supported for 18 months.
- CLucas916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There was an article for how to build a LAMP server with Ubuntu Dapper Drake...Could it really be much different?
There were two articles about building a LAMP server on Ubuntu Dapper Drake that made the front page..

http://digg.com/linux_unix/How_To_Build_A_LAMP_Server_With_Ubuntu_6.06_LTS - Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Personally, if I was going to do any kind of serious hosting with Ubuntu, I'd stick with the Ubuntu Server Edition (6.06 LTS). Not only can you choose to do a "bare" install (no Apache, no MySQL, etc.), you get 5 years of official support.
Running a server with 6.10 will only get you about 6 months of official support (when the next version is released). - ldog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Mejogid
Java servers like JBoss & tomcat are free. There are pay ones, but there is also pay PHP products like the zend optimizer. - seuaniu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3To anybody who actually uses this guide and wants to run their own server:
Do NOT have a user named "Administrator" on your server (see page 2 of the guide). After you get everything set up and live, you'll start noticing the batteries of dictionary attacks on your ssh/ftp server happening all the time. Administrator is one of the names they commonly search for.
You can use a tool like fail2ban to stop these attacks if you like, or move ssh to a non-standard port, or both.
All in all, its not a huge security risk, but it is annoying when that ***** fills up your auth.log - dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FAMP FAMP FAMP.
- becominglumberg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My only question is how many high cost lamp servers (assuming similar hardware) exist? All of these programs are open, so how is this hot news?
- forkqueue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, you'd be better off using key based logins and disabling password based logins.
- reldruh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do it because I feel most comfortable in Ubuntu and just wanted a server to play around with, not do anything critical. Plus, you don't have to install any desktop environment. My server runs without one and I'm much happier with this one than I ever was with my debian one.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ohhh, whoops. Thanks for the correction.
- nightspd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, the LAMP acronym should also include PERL, at least from what I've read.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think by low cost LAMP server he is pointing out that it is cheaper than many other types of server - such as ASP or Java. He was saying how you can build a low cast server with Ubuntu using LAMP, in effect.
- AICkieran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Because i don't need to? Its all already been done, and most of it is generic anyways most of the time the only differences being the package names and package managers
- MrPlug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yippy Going to use this version for my LAMP server, no more crashing 2k3
- dgh1973, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good article, but I'd much rather select the automatic LAMP installation which avoids probably most of the work being done in the article.
I certainly respect the idea of having micro-managed control over a server installation, but truth be told if that is a real deciding factor for me I'd avoid a distro like Ubuntu all together. I'm not bashing Ubuntu mind you (I love it) but there are more "hard core" distros out there that are even better at micro-manging what gets installed for you - like Gentoo or Slackware. Again, this is would be my approach but ONLY if I needed a "minimalistic" server.
@seuaniu
I'm not sure I agree with your statement about an administrator account. Exploits that target administrator are windows based, any kind of enumeration/use of this account will likely fail because they target IIS or windows services/flaws. Simply having this account won't make you more of a target than any other server - it's not like the server is going to be broadcasting "hey, I have an account called Administrator" and any system with decent security measures/apps will not give this away in brute force attempts (i.e. typing administrator with a bad password is not going to say "you got the username right but your password is wrong"). - growler1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1bury
- ellisgl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0If people want a FAMP box:

- halik, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1why would you use a desktop linux distro for a server box? Digg needs "Mark as Dumb" option...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1there is an easy way to install ubuntu lamp server instead of doing everything manually.
