- Phocion55, on 11/27/2008, -1/+19Seeing how it's submitted in the Linux/Unix section, possibly Linux/Unix enthusiasts?
- javaroast, on 11/27/2008, -0/+16This is awesome!!!! Maybe the boxes will be dirt cheap and available for hacking into something useful once Blockbuster goes under.
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -11/+261.) Submit a story with the title, "X runs Linux"
2.) ???
3.) Profit! - amoore2600, on 11/27/2008, -1/+12Wrong business model!!! People think of set top boxes as all you can eat buffets, that what this box should have been. Most cable users already have pay-per-view or VOD or you can always get an Apple TV. The Blockbuster box is just a re-invention of the wheel. What set the Roku apart is its business model, one price unlimited movies.
Its to bad Hollywood wont wake up and embrace the all you can eat buffet, I would pay twice what I pay for my Netflix monthly subscription + my Roku for a larger library of movies and videos. - ErhanBd, on 11/27/2008, -0/+10Not really. Google uses a modified version of ubuntu (Goobuntu). They only use it in-company, so they don't release it. If they were distributing it to the public, they'd be obliged to release the src.
- abbathdoom, on 11/27/2008, -5/+14You say it like its a bad thing. The more people who know about Linux the healthier the computer world will be, even if you personally never switch from Windows. Competition is always good for everyone.
- MethodOne, on 11/27/2008, -0/+9or discontinues the service.
- Duncoln, on 11/27/2008, -1/+9just another service thats not going to be available in Canada
- bytor4232, on 11/27/2008, -2/+8Yeah, the catch is you have to pre-rent $100.00 worth of movies before they will give you a free box. On top of which, it looks like they have less "on demand" movies than NetFlix.
Sorry, no sale. I'll be sticking with my Netflix rip-and-return plan. - BalooUrsidae, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6Depends on whether they are using GPL2, which allows that by accident, or GPL3, which fixes that loophole.
- diggproof, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6It's a computer AND a set top box.
- kd420, on 11/27/2008, -3/+8Do you even know what a computer is? And no, it is not only a laptop or desktop PC.
- ghostborg, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5I watch TV at night until I fall asleep but Directv is mostly paid programming so I like my Netflix Roku deal.
It's good for those movies that don't fall under the rip-and-return plan.
So my questions are "Where are they going with this?" Are they trying to become like cable/sat?
If so wouldn't my cable ISP eventually limit my bandwidth? - MrViklund, on 11/27/2008, -6/+11Where is the source code?
- MrViklund, on 11/28/2008, -0/+4Great. I was just a little bit worried. These days you see allot of news about companies using Linux in different devices but you never hear anything about the source code. I don't want companies to get away with using Linux for commercial gains and not provide the code, if they have to do so under the current license. I think we really really need to keep an eye on this. It's important that they respect the license.
- bwinebarger, on 11/27/2008, -1/+5So does Roku. Big deal.
Blockbuster sucks. - Slade605, on 11/27/2008, -2/+6If they have a product that can do it, yes they will care.
- brianez21, on 11/27/2008, -1/+4Actually X11 runs *on* Linux, as well as many other Unix-like operating systems too.
- MrViklund, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3Well I guess now when the election is over, the Obama-bots had no purpose anymore so they reverted back to their default programing. To serve up the Linux news on Digg. God bless them.
- srg13, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3How stupid are you? If nobody cared about this, then it wouldn't be on the front page... In fact, there's a little box next to the title which shows exactly how many people (who have seen the article) care. Or if, like you said, you want to who cares, take a look at the comments, or click the 'Who dugg this' button.
If you don't, then why did you even bother posting such a useless comment? - Slade605, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3Please correct my confusion, but isn't the source code only protected under the GPL if the device using it is sold to customers?
Example:
Company uses Linux servers with a stripped down setup that is used only to monitor and log in/outbound traffic. Would they have to release source code? - adkenc, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3does that mean the service works with opensuse? that would be better than virtualized netflix...maybe.
- Slade605, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3Thanks for the clarification.
- richw, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3so what? anytime something new comes out that runs on linux does it really need to be posted to digg? I love linux and all, but come on. It's not like this changes anything. Had this box run on windows would it be posted here, probably not.
- srg13, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2If I remember correctly, the GPL states that if you distribute the binaries, you have to distribute the source either with them, or at the request of whoever you distribute them to - regardless of whether it's sold or free.
- Bicep, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2This set-top box is mentioned because it is a competitor to Netflix. The problem I have is that Netflix expects me to have Windows on my computer to use their services. This means I won't use Netflix until they recognize that not every computer runs Windows.
Also, the real message of running the Linux, needs to make it to the computer hardware makers, game makers, and online services (e.g. Netflix), so they will build their products to work with Linux.
Competition is good. We must have a choice when purchasing a new computer!
Stop the Monopoly, stop the Microsucks tax!!! - Walcherina, on 11/27/2008, -5/+7I'm gonna go rent a movie from blockbuster right now.
- MrViklund, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2LIKE HELL YOU DO!
- ultrafez, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2Or the UK...
- MScrip, on 11/27/2008, -1/+3The pie is a lie...
- adkenc, on 11/27/2008, -3/+4It's a trap!
- jmantra, on 11/27/2008, -10/+11Who cares?
- Clbull, on 11/28/2008, -2/+2It runs Linux... big deal eh?
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -7/+6Do you really think Microsoft/Apple care about Linux running in a box that sits on top of a TV?
They're probably laughing that this is "big" news. - Izilla, on 11/27/2008, -7/+6Yay?
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -10/+8I like pie.
- djphatjive, on 11/27/2008, -5/+3You really think I care about this BIG news?
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -6/+3Blockbuster is sure wasting a lot of money..
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -8/+4Well that sucks, We don't want Blockbuster making money off of this.
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -10/+5I second, third, fourth and fifth the notion: Who cares?
- hamobu, on 11/27/2008, -10/+5Yeah, linux rules everywhere but the desktop.
- cardyology, on 11/27/2008, -10/+5Its not a computer, its a set top box.

What is Digg?
