- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Blender is a weird beast. It's small, it's open source, it's awesome. But the interface, while not bad, is designed for those who want to take the time to learn it.
Once you know how, Blender is one of the best 3D modelling programs on the planet, as the program's interface suddenly feels natural and makes perfect sense. But if you really don't want to take the time to learn it, then Maya 6.5 (Haven't tried 7) is just better IMHO. - pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Blender is great...But they need to fix the UI! It appears to use a custom UI rather than the default Linux, Windows, or Mac UI so it is very confusing for new users...
Their are also some interesting "quirks" with the menu - Sometimes it dissapears etc. Also the scrollbars are on the left rather than on the right - GreatBunzinni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The 3D animation software may be free but what's up with the file formats? All proprietary. That's not the way to go when one's trying to praise the free nature of things.
- drgalaxy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To those who decry the interface of Blender: A complicated task requires complicated tools. If you are going to be a blacksmith you will learn to use the tools of a blacksmith.
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1This is old stuff, but I'll digg because I love Blender. (Actually, I just started using it about a month ago.)
By the way...as for the UI, I am a complete beginner, and it didn't take long to learn the UI at all. The wikis are EXTREMELY helpful and will teach you everything you need to know to start out. Don't be such pansies. - Teague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ROFL
The "snoopy one" is by the guy who also did the "Watching All 6 Star Wars Simultaneously" project. - varianallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have yet to use Blender, but I have a few friends that use it exclusively for their work and they LOVE it. I've seen really amazing work come out of that application.
- VikOlliver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Blender leaves a little to be desired from my perspective. I prefer ArtOfIllusion by a long way:

Vik :v) - knellotron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like the one I made. :)
-Chris Larkee - CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1knellotron you made esign? YOU ARE GOD!
- JoeWall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1blender has many features but they should change the user interface if they want it to become mainstream. i tried it but i came back to max and cinema 4d
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been checking this festival religiously each year.. great software!
- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...but it definitelly has some non-intuitive quirks that put it at a disadvantage.
The same could be said for photoshop and adobe illustrater. The only difference is that people have made a good faith effort to learn/use those tools and those do not bitch about their interface that much. - barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"That's no excuse for poor interface design. Blender is an awesome application with some definite strong points and amazing coding, but it definitelly has some non-intuitive quirks that put it at a disadvantage."
So then vim must suck too? Just because something is more intuitive that doesn't make it better. - Billybones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought the winning New Penguoen 2.38 animation looked familiar. Check out this commertial from years ago. The same exact moves, same Vancouver background, different music.

I like the one you made, too.
"To those who decry the interface of Blender: A complicated task requires complicated tools. If you are going to be a blacksmith you will learn to use the tools of a blacksmith."
That's no excuse for poor interface design. Blender is an awesome application with some definite strong points and amazing coding, but it definitelly has some non-intuitive quirks that put it at a disadvantage. Just because a task is complicated doesn't mean you can't find a way to make it more understandable. Even blacksmiths improve on their tools. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for the guerrilla modeller blender is more than great, you can create neat stuff without the annoying screen of the maya's demo and most of the principles are the same. digg++
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oops, no HTML tags supported. URL is: http://www.theforce.net/fanfilms/animation/beagle/
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TheForce.net has a copy of the Snoopy video animation.
- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Folks hate on blenders interface merely because it's differet and/or they actually have to put some effort into learning it.
Once learned, it's quite good.
But most people will never put any effort to get to that point. - RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Awesome stuff... I really need to sit down and force myself through some tutorials for Blender.
- whiterocker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cool. The background in Penguoen is downtown Vancouver, Canada.
- saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How come every time I submit Blender news it never makes it to the front?
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Been using Blender since 98. What makes it the best? I can do anything Maya can do and IT'S FRIGGIN FREE!
- TCDToxic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Zbrush2 is the best for free hand modeling.
- seandfeeney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i second the snoopy one!
sdf - splish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Blender Is the Best. Been using it since 1999. +Digg
- superhighgain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'll stick with Lightwave. Emmy Award winning software That's tons cheaper than Maya or 3DSMax, especially if you're using a render farm."
Used to use Lightwave. Completely unintegrated and kludge of a package. The only thing about Lightwave that amazes me are how people are willing to work around all the bugs and poor documentation. Moving to a node-based architecture (Maya) was a huge improvement.
I have faith in Blender but at the same time don't believe it currently compares to the industry-strength programs. - CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Holy crap! New Penguoen is insane!
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Penguin is okay. I'll stick with Lightwave. Emmy Award winning software That's tons cheaper than Maya or 3DSMax, especially if you're using a render farm. Best 3D software out there IMHO, shame Alias pays everyone to not say they use it.
- Shish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> That's no excuse for poor interface design
But it isn't poor, it's just hard to learn. Ease of use for beginners is just one point in a long list of things to rate a UI on.
Now I've learned it, I can get much more work done than with other more normal 3D tools -- if it takes a couple of months to learn, then cuts 25% off my work time for as long as I'm using it (a couple of years so far), then it's been worth the effort. - green1152, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Blender is one of the best 3D programs I have ever used.. and it's free. You get a digg, good sir. and I plan on entering that next year.
- Zerocool82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, I posted this last night and I forgot about it. Well I like Blender because it's open source and my friend who codes. Changed a few problem with it for me. You can't do that with Maya or 3dMadx.
I know some of you hate it because it's not like Maya and 3dmax and I think that's just stupid.
Let me guess everyone who hates Blender is using Windows. One word Ubuntu. - xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You People have to realize that this is a FREE OPENSOURCE community supported application it is not closed in any way shape or form. ready for some history lesson?..
ok lets GO!!
Originally, Blender 3D was developed as an in-house application by the Dutch animation studio NeoGeo (not to be confused with the NeoGeo game console) and Not a Number Technologies (NaN); the main author, Ton Roosendaal, founded NaN in June 1998 to further develop and distribute the program. The program was initially distributed as freeware until NaN went bankrupt in 2002.
The debtors agreed to release Blender as free software, under the terms of the GNU General Public License, for a one-time payment of €100,000. On July 18, 2002, a Blender funding campaign was started by Roosendaal in order to collect donations and on September 7, 2002 it was announced that enough funds had been collected and that the Blender source code would be released. Blender is now an open source program being actively developed by the Blender Foundation. - 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Those animations are awesome - the artists behind them really deserve some credit.
- jlgosse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1how is it the best?
i can't possible see how it's better than maya or 3ds, REALLY. - Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'm sure you like the 3d studio that you downloaded with BitTorrent, jlgosse, but nobody really cares. For free, you can't beat Blender.
