- Sammi84, on 03/04/2008, -43/+180Most people live in denial, but simple fact is that Linux really is everywhere already. Linux dominates the OS market on everything from large supercomputer clusters, to smaller web servers, to tiny hand held devices of all sorts. The Linux revolution has come and gone already. At present Linux is all around us.
OMG Linux is the Matrix! - oldhick, on 03/04/2008, -27/+124I love this self-glorifying bs... I've worked with Linux for years but I don't feel the need to act like a teenage girl at a New Kids on the Block concert. Its great, whoopdy friggin do. I think its fantastic at doing some things. I think it lacks in other areas. But then again, so do all products.
Comments like "anyone who wants to use their computer to the fullest will generally use Linux..." are just ignorant. I got a bunch of HP-UX boxes running at 95% capacity, is that fullest? I have an AIX based processing system that averages around 97%. Linux is cheap and it works... Other OS' work too.
"OOMG Linux is the Matrix!", are you for real? Re-read your comment and tell me you don't sound like a prepubescent girl. - rudy23, on 03/04/2008, -2/+57show us pictures of your sister. that will help us determine the truth
- BigManOnCampus, on 03/04/2008, -30/+82My sister's boyfriend recently stated (in all seriousness)... "Windows Vista is the greatest operating system ever!"
He was serious. He is a Microsoft Fanboy.
I basically just blinked. I had no idea how to respond. I was like Cartman when his funny bone was broken. There were no words. - Falldog, on 03/04/2008, -7/+47I bet I didn't know Linux could not do that.
- Mr.Gone, on 03/04/2008, -4/+37Wow, with this software you could make it look like you've thrown a puppy off a cliff!
- srg13, on 03/04/2008, -6/+37Not surprising - I doubt any feature film has ever been rendered on anything other than Linux / Unix, and a lot of 3D work (with Maya) and compositing (Shake, Nuke etc.) is done on *nix too...
- inactive, on 03/04/2008, -4/+34I did know that linux could do this. What did I win in the bet?
- twertyto, on 03/04/2008, -7/+35O Linux,

- Stupidumb, on 03/04/2008, -8/+33Linux did not do any of that. It was Maya.
I was gonna say it's an OS, but I don't want to start some kind of pedantic, retard war, so here:
"The name "Linux" comes from the Linux kernel, started in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. The system's utilities and libraries usually come from the GNU operating system, announced in 1983 by Richard Stallman. The GNU contribution is the basis for the alternative name GNU/Linux."

Thanks for being sane about it. I have experience with Linux, Mac OS, and Windows. Each have their strong points and weak points. Depending on what people want to do, I'll make recommendations accordingly. But at the end of the day, I don't care who uses what, so long as they're not coming to me for tech support. - bemenaker, on 03/04/2008, -2/+25Digg killed LinuxJournal? WTF?
- surian, on 03/04/2008, -13/+36I don't know, I think a lot of people realize that Linux can do just about everything that Windows can do. I don't think there is much denial out there anymore from those who actually care to know. Anyone who wants to use their computer to its fullest will generally use Linux of some sort, be it for a server, a small hand-held device that needs all the RAM it can to run, or a computer scientist creating complicated algorithms.
However, the lack of official support and a slightly high learning curve continue to scare the average home computer user. Ubuntu has done a fantastic job at alleviating some of these concerns but there is still a long way to go before your average windows user will pick up Ubuntu as a replacement. - peagle, on 03/04/2008, -0/+22I don't not concur with the opposite of what you didn't say.
- nigel502, on 03/04/2008, -6/+28M... i didn't know that it could crash after only 93 diggs. .
- Chaulis, on 03/04/2008, -4/+23Fanboyism is everywhere.
- PleaseJustDie, on 03/04/2008, -0/+18hence why he said Linux/Unix and *nix instead of just saying "UNIX"
- fokov, on 03/04/2008, -1/+18I don't know why they are digging you down. My parents, after owning a computer for 15 years, just found the volume control. Windows is pretty dumb, but the sad thing is so are the typical users.
- Desco, on 03/04/2008, -1/+18Nice, you posted an article and in the title you didn't give us any information, and you also decided not to follow the convention of giving a description in the field labeled "DESCRIPTION:"
You suck at Digging. - oldhick, on 03/04/2008, -5/+22I've used Windows since 3.1, DOS before that. I'm a Red Hat certified engineer. I'm active in the linux community, I also don't give a rats ass about which OS is better. They all work.
- rudy23, on 03/04/2008, -6/+22uh except the Desktop
- dannydyer1000, on 03/04/2008, -1/+16Well, I'm *****.
- Firehed, on 03/04/2008, -3/+16How do you respond? Exactly how you did - not at all. What's it to you if he likes Vista? It's an operating system for Christ's sake. Use what you want, let him use what he wants, and leave it at that.
- dannydyer1000, on 03/04/2008, -0/+13listen to the man, he speaks great justice
- VIrus9, on 03/04/2008, -3/+15"I'm not against Linux, I'm just wondering why they didn't chose what would seem to be the best tool for the job..."
It's about cost to benefit ratio. It's cheaper to run a powerful post facility based mostly around Linux than an equally powerful facility based around Macs.
A lot of high-end video apps for Linux are still based on open source code. In other words, there's no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to customizing a piece of software to the needs of a particular project. In a Mac based facility, you'd either have to build a new app from the ground up (which might be easy, but takes time and money- two things you never have enough of when you're in post) or deal with the software's license holder to customize the software (which takes even more time and money).
Combine this with the cost of licensing the OS and software for every terminal in the facility and you can see that aside from being a powerful tool, Linux is more cost effective. - ghoest, on 03/04/2008, -2/+14Major studios like Tippet and the studio I work for, Rhythm and Hues use Linux b/c of the amazing flexibility it provides us. If any smaller studio is worth a damn too they use linux also to streamline things ( I'm working on the Incredible Hulk right now on a Linux computer ;D )
- JasonMaloney101, on 03/04/2008, -2/+13Too soon.
- lynx44, on 03/04/2008, -0/+11Pics can be pre-op, thats fine
- plizard, on 03/04/2008, -3/+13my comp sci teacher in high school fought with me stating redhat was nothing more than a windows app
- oderdigg, on 03/04/2008, -1/+11Dugg for this line only.. "But at the end of the day, I don't care who uses what, so long as they're not coming to me for tech support"
- dinobot, on 03/04/2008, -2/+11I guess it still cannot resist the digg effect
- DontEatTheFish, on 03/04/2008, -2/+11Winblows fanboy
- sublimemm, on 03/04/2008, -1/+10mirror?
- MattBD, on 03/04/2008, -0/+9I don't know. I mean, I always think a distro like Gentoo would be ideal for hardcore PC gamers if Linux was better supported in terms of games, since they spend ages customising their hardware to get the most out of it so I'm sure they'd be willing to do the same to get an OS that was customised to get the most out of their computer and get better performance on games.
Just a thought. - elementop, on 03/04/2008, -1/+9I disagree. It's not a desktop for everyone, but it has performed admirably for me for over seven years. If you aren't a gamer, then there is very little that I've found that a Windows desktop can do that my Linux desktop can't. And if you are a sys admin like me, then there are a *lot* of things that the Linux desktop can do a whole lot better than a Windows desktop. But, of course, YMMV. Choose the best tool for *your* needs :)
- mrmacky, on 03/04/2008, -0/+8sudo apt-get install package_name, is by far the hardest command to remember.
Thankfully theres also Synaptic package manager, and the Add/Remove Programs in Ubuntu, but still, having all the apps I need in one central repository is just a hogwash idea compared to going to stores and dealing with currency transaction to achieve the same result. - KingGorilla, on 03/04/2008, -0/+8what?
- inactive, on 03/04/2008, -3/+11Linux can do nothing?!
Mirror needed. - BigManOnCampus, on 03/04/2008, -2/+10It's still not the "greatest ever", not when it was what, 5 years overdue, and was essentially an unnecessary upgrade with crippleware portions.
It may be rock-solid to you, now, but you haven't gained anything over XP other than added stability. Which, btw, should have been a feature of XP.
In fact, you're spending more (in terms of processor and ram) to make the OS run with Vista than you were with XP, how is that improvement? - Modestexcuse, on 03/04/2008, -3/+11Let us see Linux produce a mirror. Now that, would be kick some a*s.
- Duffle, on 03/04/2008, -1/+9Linux is cheaper. That's pretty much it.
- kenpod, on 03/04/2008, -4/+12linux is sure gaining ground. its the future.
- shoshumi, on 03/04/2008, -1/+8Linux installed perfectly on an empty toilet paper roll....now what?
- headzoo, on 03/04/2008, -3/+10A lot of people aren't going to be happy until Linux seizes Microsoft's share of the desktop market.
- linkinpark342, on 03/04/2008, -0/+7You mean going to add/remove programs? yea i do have issue doing that sometimes. Or downloading deb file off the internet and double clicking that? yeaa that "double click" thing can confuse some people. Or do you mean actually compiling something, which a noobie to Linux shouldn't be doing in the first place; wait for a deb to be released and leave compiling to gentoo users (we're masochists...)

- elementop, on 03/04/2008, -0/+7Actually, I'll be happy when my family, friends and job don't require me to support their crappy Windows boxes any more :P
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 03/04/2008, -1/+8"So I ran a 'man mount' and started getting a little more of an idea of what I was supposed to do." I thought at this point it was going to turn into a big linux-homosexual joke post... I thought for sure I had been duped into reading for so long on a joke.
