Edit: sorry, didnt mean to reply to this comment. - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -2/+11this guide assumes you will use a card that supports DVB (supported by the hauppauge nova-t series), but most people will use IVTV (which is used by the hauppauge pvr series).
this also forgets to mention:
-- where to get mythcentre
-- that you must initially run mythfilldatabase before running the frontend the first time
-- how to set up mythtv as a system service.

Installing Ubuntu was easy, installing MythTV was easy, the hard part: LIRC
LIRC is the InfradRed Remote Control support, and to get my MCE remote to work, involved downloading LIRC source, linux source, compilers, running a setup, getting config files and compiling away. A lot of it I was able to copy from the Ubuntu forum, but its still way more complicated that I would have liked.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=288229
Im still working on my MythTV setup, and overall its good, especially considering the price, but still lacks a lot of the polish and ease you get with MCE on Windows. - Sun.Surfin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4More like gain financial headaches... Systm did a video tutorial for building a computer and setting up MythTV for under $500, and for the price, I think it's worth the time!
http://revision3.com/systm/mythtv - Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I find that KnoppMyth is the easiest and best way to install MythTV:
http://www.mysettopbox.tv.
I am currently running 1 backend with 3 tuners and 1.1TB of hard drive space and two frontends all on KnoppMyth R5D1.
(This is much "lighter" than Ubuntu, also. It is running a modified Debian distro with Fluxbox) - hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5or does MCE look and act like MythTV that's been around much much longer?
- mbrutsch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Did you see what they charge for MMC? $699.99 for the basic version. At times like these I'm glad we have Bittorrent."
Wow, you can download an entire PC over BitTorrent? You *do* realize that the $699 is for a PC with tuner card, with MythTV installed and configured, and free support, right?
I have one, with dual tuners and 400GB HD, and it's great. Andrew provided excellent support, and I love it. - spisska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@thorbergtd
"this MythTV program looks an awful lot like MCE2005"
The other way around. Myth was around long before MCE was.
And comparing MCE to Myth is rather like comparing a paper airplane to a real one. They both have wings but that's where the similarity ends. - smellinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had a DVR from Time Warner. It sucked pretty bad. I have VCRs. They suck worse.
I returned the Rental DVR, and the wife and kids had a huge fit. Cut my monthly cable bill from $90+ to $10. I reminded them how to use VCRs, and they laughed and cried. VCRs suck so bad compared to DVRs.
I took an old PC which was powered off in the basement, and bought a Hauptpauge 500 card and a 250Gb drive. Installed MythTV using the wilsonweb link mentioned above, and love it. It can do so many things that the DVR couldn't do: Better prioritizations on recordings, multiple TV capability (with the front-end / back-end architecture), Better logic on deciding what to record, Internet browsing, music and news feeds, better on-screen guide (with the ability to eliminate bad channels and customize), better customization of the remote control, time stretching (run at 110% speed), Music / MP3 integration, game integration, FAR better integration with video editing (so I can create my own clips, and upload to YouTube, as an example).
There's really no comparison between MythTV and a VCR (or even a DVR).
I'm out $240, using a beat / old circa 2001 PC, and have far better functionality than I had with my little Time Warner DVR. My cable bill has been reduced by $80+ per month, so I have payback in 3 months. Meanwhile, now that I understand the architecture and installation, I'm going to beef up my back end, and set up 4 front ends. Might cost me another few hundred and a few more decommissioned PCs, but well worth it. And I'm in control; no dependency on Windows DRM or the crappy Time Warner DVR.
I really have no idea how I'd do that with your suggestion (4 VCRs or 4 DVRs???), short of shuffling tapes or DVR units from one room to another. Here I can record in one place (my "data center"), and watch anywhere (bedroom, living room, game room, or home theater).
Sorry, yours is NOT a better option. - TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So... how do i adapt this for use in America (standard cable)? I just got my barebones pc in yesterday (Viewsonic M2000), so I'm really looking forward to setting everything up (including the 1080p projector coming december)!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Used it a dozen times?
I've been using Snapstream's Beyond TV for almost three years and I've only reinstalled it once and that was because I wanted a clean upgrade to the newest version. Sure it costs $ but it works well without a lot of fuss.
Thanks for guide though. I've been considering making my PVR dual boot just to compare the two. - r00tus3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Great, now if I could only get my frikking tv tuner card to work in ubuntu, that'd be fan-*****-tastic. Worked fine in 5.10 but the upgrade broke it! :@
- Mythguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree, its easy to people that have been using linux. But to others that are new to linux, it might not be that simple. Not to mention there are things you need to do after you install. Such as set your password for the MythTV user that the install creates and things like that.
- Nerevar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah i've been using that guide for a while (from the source site, not the forum post). MythWeb doesn't quite setup right though (permissions problems), though it's pretty easy to fix. Great guide for the most part though.
At some point I may try and write my own how-to. We'll see. - shoffman11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about the people who need to use IVTV? Sorry, it's just not this easy (not that setting the whole thing up is hard). Better guides exist.
- StayPuft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Over the weekend I set up a mythtv box on top of fedora core 6 using this guide:
http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php
Worked pretty well and includes how to set up IVTV. - NTolerance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Knoppmyth distribution builds MythTV on top of Fluxbox, so it's got a fairly small footprint.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Mythguy:
--"There are people that are running High Def live TV with a 2.0 pentium on a geforce 6200. Windows Media center could never touch that."
Thats no fault of MCE, just means that Microsoft designed it to work with more modern machines.
--"My sons PC which is a P4 1.3 with 256 of ram runs ubuntu smoothly"
I installed Ubuntu on a similar machine a while ago and found it lagged compared to windows. Guess it depends on your specific hardware.
--"Linux is just more efficient."
The linux kernel might be efficient, but X/KDE certainly aren't.
And no, I'm not a Microsoft fan boy. But I'm also no linux zealot. - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV
You can do a basic ubuntu install and just run openbox. there is no need to have gnome or kde if its a dedicated htpc. - sremick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What if one wants to save CPU cycles on the server and instead of having to use them to support Gnome, would rather they went towards actually running MythTV? Seems you could save bucks on hardware this way by having it utilized better.
As easy as Ubuntu is, I don't see it as ideal for a server. I'm of the "servers should be text-mode" camp. - sublime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is a how-to really necessary for this?:
sudo apt-get install mysql-server
sudo apt-get install mythtv mythtv-themes - onesojourner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is a good little guide for first time myth users https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV_Edgy_Backend_Frontend and when you are setting this up remember that this program has just reached .20 not 2.0. this is in a very young development stage. give it a little slack. yep its a little hard to set up, but once it is it is a top notch program.
- Mythguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What kind of tuner card is it? Drop a question in the forums over at http://Tvease.net/support/ . They are really good at answering all questions about MythTV stuff.
- CubeFarmDrone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Did you see what they charge for MMC? $699.99 for the basic version. At times like these I'm glad we have Bittorrent.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3@MamaDukes
--"It runs better. You can run mythTV with no issues "
If you can manage to install it which, judging by the number of guides out there, isn't trivial.
--"... watching live tv with pause and rewind. Lets see windows claim or do that ..."
Huh? Thats one of the most basic features of any PVR.
--"The site that this is hosted on also sells media centers"
I don't want to buy anything, thats why someone would be looking at MythTV in the first place.
@bias
--"It's sad. you even have to type commands to install something..."
I have no problem typing commands to install something (I used linux as my desktop for several years and preferred using a text console over X), but installing something should still be intuitive and easy. - enkafan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd imagine that the "best guide" would be a guide that would teach you what you are doing so that you don't have to rely on it over and over again for the same simple task.
- tony.pitale, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Marked spam for the many short-comings listed above.
- MamaDukes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Its not sad. It runs better. You can run mythTV with no issues on a P4 1.8 watching live tv with pause and rewind. Lets see windows claim or do that with their media center. The site that this is hosted on also sells media centers. If you go to their home page with the menu at the top left and then click on media centers. They have awesome affordable media centers.
1349 for a media center with dual tuner and 1.5 TB of storage. Now thats awesome. - sccloatrtk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I record colbert and conan each night and have it auto cut commercials out and playback at +10% speed, mythtv is my best friend
- Mythguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think what she meant was that window media center running on a 1.8 would have issues with live TV. Not live TV in general.
There are people that are running High Def live TV with a 2.0 pentium on a geforce 6200. Windows Media center could never touch that. Hell, vista alone recommends 2 gigs of ram for the premium.
It is a little harder to setup on linux, but the benefits are greater in my opinion. That is why there are tutorials. To make it easier for everyone.
My sons PC which is a P4 1.3 with 256 of ram runs ubuntu smoothly and has had no issues what so ever. Yet on Xp it lags bad. Linux is just more efficient. Ubuntu now is almost as easy as windows to set up, and getting better all the time. I think widows days are numbered.
Now begin the Windows Fan Boy flag fest. - alen3K, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3true that.
- spisska, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If you want to avoid mucking around with lirc (which is not all that hard if you can follow directions), you could always use a wireless keyboard. They start around $20 or so, and work automatically in Linux as standard USB keyboards.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Kinda sad when you need a guide just to install some software.
(Bury away!) - thorbergdt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Looks neat... but my All-in-wonder 800xt card doesn't work so guess i won't be trying it out.
Just a side note for all you Microsoft bashers out there the functionality and presentation of this MythTV program looks an awful lot like MCE2005, which im sure they intended but lets give a little bit at least a tiny bit of props to Microsoft for their media center program. - agentgray, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2https://monolithmc.com/
Save time headaches. Anyone have one? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I have a better option.
Buy a damn VCR and don;t mess around with two weeks of fiddling just to get a system that records what you want about 40% of the time.
Or better yet, just get a DVR from your cable company! Problem solved! - bias, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3It's sad. you even have to type commands to install something...
and you mean you can run it on a P4 1.8, that doesn't mean everyone has no issues. - bias, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0is linux this hard you need to read the guide dozen times to do the same thing? and so many different tutorials?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3Ubuntu is trash!
