- canada42, on 05/10/2009, -1/+48Until the majority of game developers start supporting linux I'm stuck on windows. Booting a live distro to play knockoff games (or pulling my hair out trying to get them to work with WINE) is not worth the hassle to me.
That said Ubuntu is pretty much awesome. - Laminarcissus, on 05/10/2009, -4/+35Linux...Gamers...hehe.
- UK31337, on 05/10/2009, -0/+23Dugg for not being a one-sided, biased, Ubuntu love-fest like many Linux articles are. Nice to see a wide range of distros in there.
Don't get me wrong, I use Ubuntu and it's great, but there are other very good distros available (as the article shows) and I feel that Ubuntu gets too much of the limelight. - michelsonmorley, on 05/10/2009, -12/+34But can they run Crysis?
- wesw02, on 05/10/2009, -2/+22I'm very surprised to not see Gentoo listed as a power user distro. Stating they've had a hard couple years. We're still widely used and developed. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, we were the first distribution ran on the Playstation 3 because of the flexibility provided during the install.
This article is little bizzare as it is. It labels distros "Best for the coder", "Best for the sysadmin", etc. I fail to see how a distro can be "Best for the coder", I mean maybe the tools come preinstalled on some distro's, but from my experience it's not very tough to install a compiler, framework, editor, etc. on the distro of your choice. - robertisaar, on 05/10/2009, -2/+15michelsonmorley said Crysis, not farcry...
- habbofresh, on 05/10/2009, -4/+17Generic comment about subjective article. fanboys, haters, nothing more.
- Icecream, on 05/10/2009, -3/+15Shame he said Crysis and not Farcry
- canada42, on 05/10/2009, -0/+12You misunderstand. There's nothing wrong with windows. I enjoy linux and find it superior, but not superior enough that I'm going to castrate my choices in software just so I can know that in 15 years I will have contributed a few hundred dollars to getting video game developers to make games for linux. Sorry but I enjoy my hobby far more than I enjoy being a linux elitist that refuses to use anything else.
Further, that does actually work. While your argument would seem logical, its not realistic. Refusing to use windows software doesn't increase support for linux, using linux software does. The number of Linux users is growing by the day, and when the market share is big enough developers take notice and will try to fill a niche that doesn't really exist yet. You're never going to get enough people to refuse to buy windows software that developers are going to take a look at linux, they're going to look at linux because its an untapped market, which will in turn increase support for the OS. Refusing to use windows is pretty much impossible for any large company that wants to get something done. Linux is a superior alternative but support for the OS has to come first. Its not a wise decision to use an OS that can't run the software you need to perform the everyday operations of your company. - sirhomer, on 05/10/2009, -0/+11Yes.
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=a ... - Thorpe, on 05/10/2009, -7/+18Ubuntu
- vulcanius, on 05/10/2009, -0/+11Personally I've always run Gentoo but more and more I've been seeing Arch popping up, guess I have to find out what it's all about.
- Laminarcissus, on 05/10/2009, -2/+12No, the biggest problem is that some Linux advocates have become so obsessively focused on a made-up "market share" war with Windows that they are willing to destroy what makes Linux valuable just to gain points.
What makes Linux valuable is its flexibility, and the truly huge community of coders, developers, marketers, and end-users devoted to finding new ways to express that flexibility.
We don't need basement Napoleons trying to get us all to march in lock-step just so you can work out your hostilities towards Bill Gates. - nedzeve, on 05/10/2009, -0/+8"you have to do a clean install if you wanna move from one version to the next"
Wrong. - MicrosoftBob, on 05/10/2009, -1/+9Mint
- nedzeve, on 05/10/2009, -1/+8In case you're not trolling and your confusion is legitimate, I'll bite and educate you:
There is no such single OS as known "Linux" released by a single organization in different version. There is a class of operating systems that are based on the Linux kernel and other F/OSS tools and developed, packaged, and released by a wide variety of different companies, groups, and corporations independently of each other. - 3242130193, on 05/10/2009, -1/+8There's no such thing as a 'distro system.' It's called package management and puppy uses .pet for installable packages.
Puppy Linux saved my life when my hardddrive died. I was even able to install openssh-server on it so I could still access my computer from away. It's a pity that it doesn't have more support - I think there's a huge potential in the distro, but it needs to get just a little more stable. - pingveno, on 05/10/2009, -1/+8Agreed. Compatibility is the primary purpose that I keep a copy of Windows around. Games and Linux aren't worth the effort. Besides that I stick to Linux.

CrunchBang
Maybe Ubuntu, but your RAM may be a bit low.
Puppy will _fly_ with those specs. - 0tis, on 05/10/2009, -0/+6I've never tried it myself, but Steam and its games apparently run very well over Wine.
- MicrosoftBob, on 05/10/2009, -1/+7"...or just don't give a *****."
Then ***** off already and let us discuss the article. - twiztidsinz, on 05/10/2009, -0/+6I found that article lacking... so I'll bury it (TuxRadar) as spam.
Thanks! - canada42, on 05/10/2009, -0/+6I have my share of consoles, but a mouse + keyboard beats the hell out of a gamepad for nearly anything sans fighting games. Not to mention you miss out on amazing games like starcraft, diablo series, half life series, etc. Yes I know there's a console version of starcraft, it sucks. A lot.
- sirhomer, on 05/10/2009, -0/+6I would recommend Puppy Linux or Zenwalk.
- JamesGrimlee, on 05/10/2009, -0/+5
terminal: "sudo update-manager -d" (if you haven't set a root password yet you'll need to do so first with "sudo passwd".)
gui: system->administration->update manager. Click on Check. Click on Upgrade. - sedaghatfar, on 05/10/2009, -1/+6compiz
- DeadOhioSky, on 05/10/2009, -4/+9Well your missing out then. Theres alot of cool features youll never even know your missing, unless you try it out. And you havent needed to be "i33t" (?) since Ubuntu was first released.
- twiztidsinz, on 05/10/2009, -0/+5but..but...but.... There's only ONE version of linux!!!!
Those are distros... VERY different!!!!!!!!!!! - sebey, on 05/10/2009, -3/+8a decent tech rader article wow!
- canada42, on 05/10/2009, -0/+5as posted in my reply to 324, it just doesn't work that way. The developers have to start the ball rolling by seeing that there is a niche to be filled. Refusing to use windows software does not promote linux, using linux software does. Users are not going to ignore their hobby or let their businesses fail because they like linux better than windows.
- MWeather, on 05/10/2009, -0/+5You can use DirectX, C# and Visual C++ to develop Linux games. Most of the games I run on Linux use them.
- 0tis, on 05/10/2009, -0/+5They won't start supporting Linux in a hurry (from someone who uses Ubuntu). See: Mac
- MWeather, on 05/10/2009, -1/+6Debian
- 0tis, on 05/10/2009, -1/+6Or a dichotomy.
- leviathan2k, on 05/10/2009, -2/+7It is not possible. Linux concept provides a variety of different solutions for everything, and some work better in certain situations than the others. Ubuntu anf Gentoo (as extreme examples) are both Linux distros, but are aimed at totally different groups of users, have different system structure, and are created and supported by different groups.
In my opinion, the many faces of Linux are one of it's great Pro's - the "rivalry" of different distributions tends to speed things up and improve the quality in their development. Only with the rise of Ubuntu have we seen other distros drastically improve their entry-level-user-friendliness, for example. - topcat5, on 05/10/2009, -1/+6Stay away from ATI cards.
- javaroast, on 05/10/2009, -0/+5The difference is that none of the distros are arbitrarily restricted. They may have different focuses, but they aren't restricted for the sake of creating a version. So you won't find a distro that only allows 3 running programs, or a distro that limits your concurrent of half open connections, or a distro that prevents installation of certain programs that belong to a different version.
- 0tis, on 05/10/2009, -0/+4dreamache - great, so you're not a Linux user.
...Thanks for sharing, I guess? - nedzeve, on 05/10/2009, -0/+4Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuse...
- raldz, on 05/10/2009, -1/+5i solved this problem a long time ago.. i bought a PS3 and Xbox... spent 700 bucks on the consoles instead of building a 2 grand machine...
- FreeBooteR69, on 05/10/2009, -3/+7Ubuntu ftw. Who says there aren't decent games available for GNU/Linux? I get plenty of gaming action:
Penumbra series
World of Goo
Sacred
NWN
Eschalon book 1
Doom3 (Having fun now with DarkMod - doom conversion inspired by The Thief series -stlucia/thief mod so far awesome) watching this with panting breath
Sauerbraten
OpenArena
Nexuis
Urban terror
lincity-ng
Simultrains
Gnome mud (when you get that text mud nostalgia)
Wine games:(ones i play)
World of Warcraft
Lord of the Rings Online
Ultima Online
Dosbox (all the old pc favs)
Eye of the Beholder series
Civilization
Colonization
Dungeon Master series
Master of Orion
Powermonger
A-Train
Just a few of the games i play, lots out there. So what if some of the big titles don't want to port to linux, they won't get my money then. - ZeroNeo, on 05/10/2009, -0/+4Fedora was running on the PS3 before Yellow Dog for PS3 was released.
- Laminarcissus, on 05/10/2009, -3/+7My point exactly.
- 3242130193, on 05/10/2009, -2/+5That doesn't work. Nobody's going to support it unless you give them a market. By giving game manufacturers a market on the Windows platform, you're dooming the cause. I'll never buy any software made for Windows - if it's made for Linux though, I'll consider it. And doing so, I know that I'm exerting just a tiny influence on software companies to support Linux. And if enough people do the same, then it'll happen. Supporting it on Windows though - you're just pushing the rock back down the hill.
- dbz253, on 05/10/2009, -0/+3it depends on whether you are talking about servers or desktops as far as stability goes, and i would only compare it to windows with people outside of the internet.
- MWeather, on 05/10/2009, -0/+3"When I don't have to enter console commands to install wireless network drivers or install third-party programs that may or may not allow me to play games at varying levels of quality, then I'll switch."
I have three different wireless chipsets running under Linux, and every one worked out of the box on Linux. I had to install the drivers under Windows on 2 of them.
As for installing third party programs in order to play games, how do you get by without installing DirectX? - egrefen, on 05/10/2009, -1/+4"Alongside the Bible study aids is a pre-configuration of DansGuardian that will block most offending sites out of the box. It features a graphical interface with parental controls that changes the local proxy and Firefox configurations as well as keeping a log of what's been read and when.
This is exactly what you need for younger members of your family, and thanks to the Christian Edition being built on Ubuntu, you can easily install any other packages you may require."
I love how Ubuntu Christian Edition has stuff allowing you to spy on your kids. 'cause nothing says turning the other cheek, letting he who is without sin throwing the first stone, and worrying about the beam in your own eye before worrying about the straw in that of your neighbour like MAKING SURE YOUR KIDS AREN'T READING SUBVERSIVE MATERIAL (aka science).
These guys make me sick... - TritonX, on 05/10/2009, -0/+3Yep, its a troll.
